Respecting others who are differen llsychiatrists tell us that most of our hasic lieelings and prejudices are cultivated uncon- sciously in us hy the time we are six years old. Perhaps they may he right. But no one in Lansdowne'Aldan lligh School, no matter what his lmaclcground may he, is thought of as an outsider. Our everyday school lille and activities pro- vide the best laboratory tor developing mutual respect and cooperation. Singing together in chorus, acting together in plays, working to- gether in student organizations, and playing together on teams build friendships and destroy prejudices which may have existed in our minds. The need lior teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic is important, hut our school has other very important lessons to teach. Une of these is learning to respect people who ditilier from us in nationality, color, religion, or economic status. Uur classroom discussions often turn in this direction. In language classes we study foreign lands and people in addition to vocabulary and grammar. ln lfnglish classes we read the works ol' authors from many kinds ol haclxgrounds, and discuss the liactors which inlluence their writing. lfach year, with the help ol, our International lfriendship Committee, our school is fortunate enough to have a foreign exchange student. From him we find out a great deal about the similarities and dillerences between his people and ours. ln addition to this, the American Field Service malces it possible for one or two ot our students to have a chance to spend the summer in a foreign country, and then share with all ot us their deeper understanding ol' the people ot' that country. Xve try not only to tolerate, hut to undeistand. .llf'.r. lv. l2'1'11u.v' .I'l10u'J' 11 .rflk J'r'r7l:f wf11'1'f1 .rfle fvrougijfll lrnrk ,ff-11111 fm' fl'l.17 Ia llldlltl Za K. lei.-fflff, lf. ll11.11o,01'm1. ll . .1I!4!!'l'.l'0lI.
