H1 tory of Lansdale Hugh School Lansdales f1rst hugh school was housed un a remodeled factory at the sute ot the present Green Street School From there ut moved un 1887 to the Broad Street School where the f1rst commencement of the Lansdale Schools was held on June 29 1888 wuth four graduates The largest class un the hustory of Lansdale Hugh School consustung of 176 students was grodu ated on June 8 1948 J Horace Landus was Lansdale Hugh Schools f1rst pruncupal After holdung thus posutuon he be came County Superuntendent of Schools uses on East Maun Street un 1913 and the Maun Street School was deducated un the followung year Furst to be graduated un the Lansdale Theatre was the class of 1923 Prevuous to thus tume graduatuon was held un Musuc Hall In September 1922 George F Munnuch became pruncupal of the hugh school Upon hus death un 1927 Herman l. Bushop took over the posutuon and has very capably held ut to thus present year The new senuor hugh buuldung was deducated un 1931 and another addutuon to thus buuldung was completed sux years later The ground comprusung thurty acres aduounung the school buuldung was purchased from the Charles S Jenkuns Estate un 1943 to be used as an athletuc and practuce field for the Junuor and Senuor Hugh School The new Vocatuonal School whuch was erected on the plot of ground bordered by Church and Penn Streets was completed for class use un the fall of 1947 ln 1950 Lansdale Hugh School became Lans dale Jount Hugh School upon the admussuon of pupuls from Montgomeryvulle Townshup and Lune Lexungton Independent Townshup A uounture has now been effected wuth North Wales Hatt1eld Townshup and Borough Upper Gwynedd Townshup and Towamencun Town shup Havung served uts purpose well at the end of thus present school year Lansdale Jount Hugh School wull close uts doors for the last tume guvung way to the new North Penn Hugh School Q 0 , . , . , I I ' I . . SMITH SuPERuNTENDENT Buuldung for Tomorro w The members of the graduatung class of 1955 of the Lansdale Jount Hugh School are thunkung un terms of Buuldung as ut applues partucularly to the mam purpose for whuch school buuldungs are provuded Schools are buult so that gurls and boys wull have a place to go to receuve unstruc tuon un skull subuects un subuects desugned to promote good cutuzenshup and un subuects whuch tend to promote good health and physucal en durance Members of school staffs representatuve cutu zens of several communutues members of school boards archutects and even gurls and boys have had some part un plannung a school to serve the educatuonal unterests and needs of secondary school youth un the North Penn Area It us sun cerely hoped that the buulders and the archutects wull buuld thus school well so that the physucal structure wull play well the role for whuch ut was especually desugned We should not faul to real uze the umportance of a well desugned and well buult school buuldung Some one has saud that a classroom un a school buuldung should be arena for luvung learnung experumentung for struvung succeedung faulung for formung charac ter and for gaunung confidence A buuldung regardless of the purpose for whuch ut may be created should command fav orable attentuon Buuldung us an act whuch takes place un publuc The publuc us the buulders and archutects captuve auduence The U S Supreme Court has decuded un an umportant recent devel opment case that the concept ofthe publuc wel fare us broad and unclusuve The values ut repre sents are spurutual as well as physucal esthetuc as well as monetary lt us wuthun the power of the leguslature to determune that the communuty should be beautuful as well as healthy spacuous as well as clean well balanced as well as care fully controlled In our bug new hugh school now nearung com pletuon ut should be the hope of each of us that courage honesty untegruty understandung and other qualutues of outstandung cutuzenshup wull be buult un the munds and hearts of our gurls and boys The oct of buuldung whether ut be merely physucal or deeply cultural and spurutual us so much a publuc aFfaur Let s each one of us buuld un the very best way he knows how' Ralph R Smltlu -Q 1 I - . ,, . .
