APPRECIATION OF THE COST OF EDUCATION Greetings to the class of l939 on their successful completion ot the various prescribed courses in the Public Schools of Lansdale. Approximately 25M ot local and State taxes are required to maintain our Elementary and High Schools and perhaps you may not have given much thought to the fact that your parents have made this possible by payment ot these taxes, often at a great sacrifice but without which public schools could not function. The cost of educating the youth of Lansdale is less than SIOO. per year for each pupil, which cannot be disputed as being excessive for such a valuable investment. The Lansdale Board of Education is continually striving to offer the best educational facilities possible by furnishing modern buildings and equipment. lvly sincere wish is that all of you shall have a happy and suc- cessful career. E. P. C-otwals, Treas. U03 O ENTHIRTY-NlNl:l gag? t, in it t may it it it ti i v l l l Kg My Message to You, Class of l939: - Those of us who have been your educational guides and friends during the twelve years of your life in school are very anxious that you, as members of our largest class to date, will make a favorable impres- sion upon the hundreds of persons who already hold certificates ot graduation from the Lansdale High School. lt may be that the world does not await your coming with the same eagerness and enthusiasm as it has awaited other graduates before your time. How- ever, there is still room for you if you are willing to put forth the necessary effort. Far too many people today have run up the flag of the spirit's surrender. You can help, it you will, to correct this very serious menace to the foundations of what has always been considered to be the American way of life. We shall be watching patiently and sympathetic- ally as you struggle to achieve success with yourselves. Ralph R. Smith, Supt. UU HIGHLIGHTS OF LAN SDALEHIG Recently there appeared in an educational journal which I read some interesting figures. Of the eighty-two million ,adults in, our country, eighteen or more years of age, only six million completed high school. Fifteen million started but did not finish it. Fifty million have an educational background of eight grades or less. ' Each of you is therefore ,in a rather se- lect group. But perhaps you wonder at times whether the four years spent in high school were worth the time and effort ex- pended. Estimated in terms of knowledge gained, experiences, enjoyed, appreciations developed, ,interests awakened, horizons broadened, judgments sharpened and friend- ships made, there can be but one answer. My congratulations to each one of you! Herman L. Bishop, Principal U21 l read with a great deal of interest in the Contest number of the Talisman the ex- pressions of seniors concerning their high school career. The things which these Se- niors enjoyed the most and the things in which they excelled were not the same. lt would appear from these expressions that Lansdale High School sponsors a desirable type of individualism. l observed in each report expressions of regret for not having made the most of your high school opportunities. This would indi- cate to me that students are willing to prof- it by their mistakes. One does not learn ex- perience but he learns from experience or through experience. Your adjustments to situations will be made by forming right at- titudes. l trust that you will make efforts to form desirable attitudes and thereby at- tain rich experiences. Melvin F. Officers were elected, President, James Davis, Vice President, Robert Bricker, Secretary, Betty Swartleyg Treasurer, Merton Kline, and Mr. Thompson was chosen as a very competent class adviser. The following year the officers were President, James Davis, Vice President, Warren Hel- many Secretary., Betsy Minnichg Treasurer, Alvin White. Miss Sabold was selected as a very capable class adviser. ln the fall of l937, this class showed its great versatility by not only being very outstanding in sports, but also participating in the operetta, Step This Way, in which some of the outstanding talent of the class was discovered. ' Starting the new year off with a bang, the class surprised everyone with its fine dramatic success in the annual Junior-Senior play, The Youngest. Many athletic members of the class took part in girls' and boys' basketball, and enjoyed a fairly good season, ln the spring of the year, a gala affair sponsored by the Juniors, the Junior-Senior Prom, was held at the Manufacturers' Country Club. Many Juniors also proved themselves in tennis, track, and baseball, the out- standing spring sports, while others shone in the annual combined band and chorus concert. T331 Senior Class l'listory dFlCl QlllC2YS O WNINETEENTHIRTY-NIN Secretary, Treasurer, IVIARIAN FRANKENFIELD CERTRUDE ALLEIVI Coming back to school in September, l938, the group elected the fol- lowing officers to manage the affairs of the class: President, James Davis, Vice President, Alvin White, Secretary, Marian Frankenfieldg Treasurer, Gertrude Allem. Having already shown its capability in musicals, the class aided a great deal in putting across a very fine operetta, Bon Voyage. While work on this was being done, the l938 football and hockey teams were going forward to meet average success in the athletic field. The girls' and boys' basketball teams also placed high in the leagues, winning most of the games, although the teams were not champions. The Senior Class next showed its varied ability in giving the best-attended play in the history of the school. lt also brought in the highest returns commercially. H320 College Avenue was the name of this dramatic venture. The Talisman, the school magazine, and the Mirror, the school paper, were also well supported by the group of l939. Many literary contributions of all types were made by Seniors of a literary turn of mind. This class destroyed all former traditions of other classes, by deciding to go to the New York World's Fair instead of Washington. A Senior banquet and party was given in place of the usual Class Night. On Commencement night H. lVl. S. Pinaforef' a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, was given. Sparkling music of the highest type, set off by the most colorful and elaborate scenery ever to be set up on the Lansdale High School stage, characterized the last performance of the Senior group, ending its high school days in a blaze of glory! f39l V - - vw F- --' '-- ' --- ff -in, r ,'f: ' ' A-an -- - f3q,:f, ,L fifyv q'J .'q. SENIOR HIGH FOOTBALL The Lansdale High School football team, coached by Mr, Cowan and assisted by Mr. Crawford, was :led by Captain Robert Bricker and showed the spirit and determination of Lansdale High athletes on the gridiron. With only four lettermen returning, prospects did not look so good at the beginning of the season, but the team did better than was expected and finished well up in the Bux-Mont race, tying Jenk- intown for third place with five wins, two losses and a tie. Opening the season at home against Quaker- town, the boys turned in a good fighting game ancl won, 9-6. Two weeks later they traveled to Jenk- intown and, after a hard-fought game, triumphed by a score of 6-O. The next game, played at Souderton, resulted in another win for the Maroon. The final score was l9-O. This marked the fourteenth straight win for the Lansdale elevens, the string dating back to the latter part of the l936 season. However, the next game, played with the Ambler Trojans, marked the end of the streak and was also the first time the Maroon had been beaten on the new playing field. The Ambler team, making the breaks 'and taking advantage of every opportunity, outplayed our boys to win 13-O. ln the next encounter, Sell-Perk took the meas- ure of the Cowanites to the same tune, l3-O. This was another hard-fought game, with all the breaks in the winners' favor. The following week the team journeyed to Springfield. Still in a depression over the last two losses, the best they could do was a 7-7 tie. This game put the team in fine shape for the next game, played at home with Hatboro. The Maroon put on a good battle and won, l4-6. V This set the stage for the Annual Turkey Day Classic with Doylestown. Doyles- town came to Lansdale and, amid two thousands specta- tors, freezing fingers, and a cold, rock-like gridiron, the Maroon triumphed by a score of lZ-O. This was the third straight year in which the arch-rivals were set back, so Lansdale gained permanent possession of the Lencer Trophy. Two players were selected in the All-Bux-Mont Con- ference ratings. They were Bill Hartman and Al White. Managers Marty Marlin, Carl Rhoads and Arthur King did a great service in caring for the field and equipment. Dr. Paul Moyer, the school physician, was an aid in caring for the injured. Under the direction of Mr. Messikomer, the boys enjoyed one of the best seasons in recent years, finishing in a tie for third place in the Bux-Mont League. They started oft the season at home, losing a close one to Doyles- town. They improved steadily from then on, winning tour out of the last six games. The team ended the season with a total of seven games won and ten lost. Two of the games were lost to Jenkintown, Bux-Mont champions tor the second straight year. N The squad consisted of two seniors, seven juniors and seven sophomores. We hope for even better seasons in the years to come. THE BAND The Lansdale High School Band, this year under the capable direction of Mr. Thompson enioyed one of its most successful seasons. The band played at the football games, presenting for the first time a Drum Maioress, who led some snappy formations. They also started some- thing new by appearing at some of the basketball games. This added greatly to the enthu- siasm of the games. The fifty-six members of the band gave one of the finest concerts ever heard in the L. H. S. auditorium. CHEERLEADERS What would any sports' contest be without cheers and songs? The cheerleading squad this year, with all new members except the captain, worked many long hours trying to achieve perfect timing. They devised a whole new set of motions and inaugurated several novel cheers. The results, however, were successful as marked improvement in the enthusiasm at the games and pep meetings was noted.
