The 1978 Football Lions began the season with a group of young men short on game experience. Despite playing con- sistant and enthusiastic football, they were not able to make marks in the win column. Special recognition was given to Aaron Patterson: First Team All-City Defense, Second Team Capitol Conference and Honorable Mention All-Stateg Sam Bailey: Second Team Capitol Conference and Honorable Mention All-Stateg Steve Miller: First Team All-City Offense, Second Team Capitol Conference and Honorable All-State, Bob Nika: First Team All-City Offense and Honorable Men- tion All-Stateg Chris Suter: Second Team Capitol Conference. 27

The 1978 edition of the Girls' Tennis team ended with a record of 10-4. Mary Favero's singles victory and Kim Morton-Beth Ha- vey's doubles victory led the Lady Lions Tennis team to a surprise first place Capitol Conference Championship for the first time in the school's history. The whole team went to a fifth place District finish, a third place District finish went to Havey and Morton. On Oct. 25-28, 1978 the outstanding team of doubles joumeyed to Arlington Heights for the State Tennis Toumey where they de- feated the York doubles team. In the second match, Champaign beat Kim and Beth, bringing the team to end the season with a top 50 seeding. Juniors Kim Morton, Mary Favero and Beth Havey were first team All-City choices. Senior Dawn Poggenpohl was runner-up and Lisa Ramsey and Ruth Jorgenson received Honor- able Mention. 29
