Illinois State Normal Universitv The commercial department strives to develop understanding and efficiency in the fundamental skills needed by those just entering the business world. The curriculum of this department in- cludes typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, and office machines. The college-bound student will also find typing and shorthand valuable to him, not only at college but throughout life. Speed and accuracy are the main objectives in typing and shorthand. Pins arc awarded to those who achieve certain Did you know that Isabelle is going steady with Horace? goals. The students also have practice in taking dictation and learn the proper forms for business letters. There are many new machines which are used in the world of commerce. In the office machines class the student learns the care and operation of these machines. Those taking bookkeeping will find it a useful subject whether they are keeping their own per- sonal records or those of a business concern. Cor- rect records are important in every profession. Competence in this particular field of study is necessary for success in any other field. Courses in grammar are designed to teach the student the use ofthe tools of English. XVhen the student has eliminated the major grammatical errors from his Fnglish, he begins work on the he will afford him an opportunity to practice these skills he has gained and develop a logical, orderly method of presenting ideas. l.iterature courses introduce the student to men who have mastered the use of the English language and to the great ideas of our western world.
