A historical paper was also started. lt is written in the old English style and concerns the years of 1835-1836 of American history. The initiation ceremony consists of the pledge and then the candle lighting ritual. The purpose of the Sigma lota Nu is to gain knowledge of historic truth that mankind might know and love freedom. Bob Stone was an excellent tackler and could really move around, while Bruce Dopp was our speediest halfback. Moe Ramirez at fullback had a fight and drive that is characteristic of every great fullback. And that folks is a brief summary of the fighting personnel of our gallant football team. Our coaches, Mr. Boyle and Mr. Dopp, should indeed be proud of the team that they developed. Even though the going was tough at the beginning of the year, they ended up with a first place in the Central Conference. This crown was won by defeating Feit- shans 6 to U, Beardstown 5 to O, and Iacksonville 37 to O. Our two co-captains of the football team this year were Ben Guzouslcis and Louie Noll, who both graduated. They did a grand job and should be congratulated. Next year's co-captains, who were elected at the annual football banquet, are Moe Ramirez and Bob Stone. lf these boys carry on the fine Work of Ben Guzouslcis and Louie Noll, Lanphier is sure to have a fine team next year. l'?if- Liens Close li W 3, ST I' Page 88 I First Row, Left to Right: Bob Brubaker, Louis Ramirez, Gilbert Morrison, Bob Clutter, Roscoe Steele. So keep an eye on these gen- tlemen, as they will form the fighting teams of the future years at a great school. Page 89 FRESHMAN ' FCDOTBALL JUNIOR VARSITY Get your hand out of my face! Who's got it? Page ADAMSKI ALLARD CAIN POOS BAIVHREZ REDIC4 BASKETBALL Basketball, the world's greatest indoor sport, has had a great season at Lanphier. Our team this year had all juniors and sophomores on it except for Bob Allard, Art Spiegel, and Tom Durako, who were seniors. And although they were a youthful team in school years, we had a team to be proud of, a team of balance, a team of spirit. Our basketball personalities were known for the many feats which they exhibited in the games. Tom Durako, our forward, was known for his one-handed push shots, Bill Adamski, our center, for break shots, Wally Poos, our forward, for his fine eye, and Gene Stevenson, our guard, for his ability to break up the other team's interference. Moe Ba- mirez, forward, was known for his drive and rebounding ability, Bob Allard, guard, for his fake pass-offs, Wesley Helms, guard, for his smooth handling of the ball, Sam Bedick, forward, for his rebound shots, Chick Scharafin, guard, for his fine long shots in front of the basket, and Balph Kornfeld, guard, for his swish shots from the side. Art Spiegel, one of the first five, was forced to quit basketball because of medical reasons. He played a fine game at the center position into which Bill Adamski was later shifted. The team got off to a slow start due to the fact that our star, Tom Durako, had some misfortunes at the beginning of the season and was unable to play. But with the return- ing of Tom the team really started rolling along and became a threat to even the tough- est of them. At the annual basketball banquet, which was sponsored this year by the Hi-Y, Tom Durako was named the honorary captain of the year. lt is a great honor to be named hon- orary captain and it went to the right fellow, for he played three years of varsity basket- ball for Lanphier. Next year we will have practically the same team, except for the services of Tom Durako, Art Spiegel, and Bob Allard. So let's start cheering them on to the state, students, for it looks as if they are heading in that direction. 90 DURAKO HELIZS KORNFELD NUIQ . WATCH Tl-IESE LADS Freshman basketball is the year ot hard competition with other fellows to get a berth on the basketball team. lt is indeed hard because new techniques and methods of playing basketball must be learned. This group of boys points toward a tine team because the team members that won first place in County grade school basketball are all on this team. It means that the finest basketball players of a championship grade school team in this area are on our team. So, you figure it, will we have a good team in the future? This year the track squad has made the school recognize their ability. The thinclads have Won three meets this season by subduing Feitshans, Virden, and Iacksonville. Coach Dopp and his track crew are looking forward to these contests: the City Meet, District Meet, Springfield and the Lincoln Relays. Most of this year's team is comprised of sophomores and juniors which passes us the hint that the 1947 squad will hand more glory to Lanphier sports in the track department. Standing: Virginia Nemeth, Florence Cirillo, Charlene McQueen, Lorna Smith. CHEERLEADERS Pepping up the school, making the students cheer for the team, that is the job of our cheerleaders. The cheerleaders are in the form of an organization that has club meetings. much as other clubs do. Members oi the squad are Orville Ewing, Charlene McOueen, Marie Capronica, Betty Io Smith, Barbara Shomidie, Virginia Nemeth, Florence Cirillo, and Lorna Smith. As cheerleaders they were hard to beat. To aid cheering this year was the organization of the pep squad that was corn- posed of the 9' and 92 classes. The cheering club did much to encourage better yelling at the games. PROFESSIONAL NOISEMAKERSSTHE PEP SQUAD ' N 'i 't Bob Stone cn the rings TUMBLINC Tumbling is fast becoming a headliner at Lanphier. lt is these daring young men who entertain us on the flying trapeze, high trapeze, rings, stationary bar, mats, and many other things during the half of our basketball games. As for abilities, they obtain these through coming to early morning practices during the Week, sometimes as early as 7:00. Yearly they sponsor the Gym Circus from which the proceeds go toward the buying of additional equipment. MANAGERS Around the gymnasium, the boys who do a great deal of the work and receive none of the glory are the athletic managers. And do they work? Why, you might see little Tom England or George Turley carrying that awfully big tackling dummy on to the field. Some of our other managers who are big enough not to have to do such superhuman feats are lohn locca, Gene Stevenson, Denny Moore, Don Wilson and Bill Sausman. Our hats off to the managers.
