PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT 1 Carolyn Mountjoy Ioll.l 'ke The aim of our Physical Education program is to promote physical activities, and which will have a good carry-over value. The chief phases are Physical Edu- cation classes, intramural sports, and in- terscholastic sports. One period a week is devoted to personal and social hygiene. The activities taken up during the year include football, speedball, basketball, volley ball, tumbling, deck tennis, track, tennis, and softball. The girls have a period of time in the fall and in the spring which is devoted to rhythmic week. In the intramural program we have provided games for those students who want to play and are on no school team. Tournaments are held in basketball and softball. The girls, through sponsorship by the Girls' Athletic Association. par- ticipate in intramural volley ball, basket- ball, softball, and golf. The third phase of the Physical Educa- tion Department is the interscholastic program. Get that ball. '- Gym. Twenty-two

SOCIAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT A changing world has had its effect on the subject matter in the Social Sciences so that the social and economic problems of our nation are stressed with the aim of making the potential citizen conscious of his future responsibilities. If our demo- cratic form of government is to endure. the individual citizen must know more intimately the problems of govermnent. how they have arisen. and how similar problems have been met. either wisely or unwisely in the past. Social studies is one of the most certain methods of bringing this about. ln common with the best schools of the country Lanphier requires two units of social studies. and three or more may be earned. Vlforld History is the course given in the sophomore year. which treats of the life and accomplishments of man from early times to the present. In the junior year tl1e student turns his attention to the study of United States History. where he studies a detailed account of our country. Amer- ican Government is the science of good citizenship and is a close study of our gov- ernment and the way it functions.
