Mr. Jones, who was born in Twiggs County, Georgia, came to Lanier in 1947 where he served as teacher and counselor before becoming Principal in 1958. Formerly he was Principal at Norman Park, Georgia, and has attended Norman College, Mercer University, and the University of Chicago. A widower with four children, two sons and two daughters, he likes to fish. DORIS B. HAYS Mrs. Hays is a native Maconite and attended Bibb County schools. She has served as school secretary since Lanier Junior was first opened in 1949, having held the same position at Lanier Senior from 1942. Previously she taught at Miller High. Mrs. Hays has two daughters, one of which is married and has three children. She is now president of the Macon Business and Professional Women ' s Club. Her other interests include sewing and playing bridge. ALAN B. NORTHINGTON A.B., M. Ed. Mr. Northington became the Guidance Counselor this year after teaching history here since 1951. He is also a native of this community having at- tended the local schools as well as Mercer, the University of Georgia, and Wesleyan Conservatory. He is business advisor for the school publi- cations, plays the bass f iddle, enjoys reading, likes music, and is married and has three daughters. Mrs. Inzer, who teaches English, is a newcomer to Lanier Jr. having come to us from Birmingham, Ala. where she taught for two years. She has two children both boys, and comes from West Virginia. She earned her degree from Howard College, likes reading, . sewing, and interior decorating. a HARRY TRAWICK A.B. Mr. Trawick, teacher of English and civics, is another local product of Macon having attended Pearl Stephens, Lanier Senior High, and Mercer Univer- sity. He is the advisor of the Junior Red Cross, is married, likes to read, hunt, and tinker with autos. He was employed at the Board of Education office prior to entering die teaching profession here. MISS OUIDA POE Miss Poe was born in Barnesville, Georgia, but moved to Macon a short while after that. Teaching English in room 122 since Lanier Jr. opened in 1949, Miss Poe is one of the real veterans in tfie profession having taught at Pearl Stephens and Lanier Senior before coming here. She attended the local schools and Georgia Southern College for Women, Mercer Univer- sity, and Columbia University. In addition to her church work she likes cooking, sewing, and gardening. ROBERT ALLEN A.B., M.S. Before coming to Lanier Jr. in January, Mr. Allen taught history at Cocoa, Florida. A native of Covington, Louisiana, he earned his degrees from Southeastern Louisiana College. He is married, has two children, a boy and a girl, and is the inventor of the game of brisketball. BETTY TAYLOR A.B. Another newcomer to Lanier Jr. this year, Mrs. Taylor comes from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. A teacher of history and civics, she received her schooling at Birmingham Southern College. She is married, and her husband is a law student at Mercer University. MISS MARY HARRELL A.B., M.A. Miss Harrell, teacher of English and math, came to us when the school first opened in 1949, having been at Lanier Senior since 1943. She is a native of Dodge County, Georgia and has at- tended Appalachian State Teachers College, Emory, Georgia Women ' s College, and the University. She served as the advisor for the Junior Red Cross at our school for several years. Her outside interests consist of reading, gardening, knitting, and playing bridge. Before coming to Lanier, she taught in Cedartown, Georgia and Dodge County, Georgia. ELIZABETH LEWIS A.B., M. Ed. A teacher of Latin at Lanier Jr. since 1962, Mrs. Lewis previously taught at Winship. She was born in Macon and attended the local schools as well as Wesleyan and Mercer University. She is also a sewing and cooking enthusiast, and has two sons, one attending col- lege. KATHERINE FITE A.B. A product of Paducah, Kentucky, Mrs. Fite came to our school during the winter as a replacement for Nancy Steinfeldt who moved to Miami, Florida with her husband. Teaching English and math, she likes square- dancing, and bridge. She obtained her degree from Mercer University, and has one son, Chris, who is a stu- dent at Lanier Jr. G. LEWIS WRIGHT A.B. Mr. Wright, who hails from Hapeville, Georgia, came to Lanier Jr. in 1957 as a physical education instructor and coach. He now teaches civics and English and is the advisor of the Junior High Journal, the school newspaper. He obtained his A.B. degree at Mercer University. He is married, and his wife Jean teaches at Elsworth Hall Elementary School. He has an active interest in all sports, and is quite a chess player. Also, he is known as the haberdasher at Gents Shop. MRS. TOM PORTER A.B. A teacher of math and English in our school since 1951, Mrs. Porter was born in Macon and attended the local schools, and Mercer University. She is the wife of the principal of Lanier Senior High, has two children, a son at the University of Georgia, and a daughter at Miller. She likes to read, knit, work crossword puzzles, and play bridge. She is a former advisor for the Student Council. MISS KAREN CLIFTON A.B. Coming to our school in 1962 after having taught at Gordon High School, and in Decatur, Georgia for two years, Miss Clifton returned to her native community. She was schooled in the local system and matriculated to Mercer University where she received her degree. Other than teaching math, her interest lies in music and playing bridge. fyX ' ' . MILDRED B. CHAPMAN A.B. Born in Omega, Georgia, Mrs. Chap- man came to Mercer University where she earned her degree, and decided to make Macon her home. She came to Lanier Jr. in 1957 from Cynthia Weir Elementary School. Previous to this she taught briefly at Warner Robins. She teaches history, is advisor of the Chess Club, and likes to fish. She has two sons, one. Bill, is a student at Lanier Jr. MARGARET A. PHILLIPS A.B. In 1957 Mrs. Phillips came to Lanier Jr. from Bruce Elementary School where she taught and served as secretary. She is a Macon product and obtained her degree from Wesleyan. Her subjects are English, math, and history, and she likes to read and sew. She has four children, two sons, one married, and two daughters, one married with a baby daughter. MRS. C. M. BROWN B.S. Mrs. Brown came to us in January of this year to replace Mrs. Claire Hickey who moved with her husband to another location. Before coming here, she taught at Crawford County High in her native community. Now in her six- teenth year of teaching, Mrs. Brown has two daughters and one son. She received her degree from the Women ' s College of Georgia, and counts as her hobbies, music and fishing. RAY LATIMER A.B., M. Ed. Mr. Latimer is one of the teachers who began teaching at Lanier Junior when the school first opened in 1949 having taught in the same room (134) for the fifteen years. He hails from Atlanta, Georgia and attended an Air Force Flight Training School, University of Tennessee, and Mercer University. He is married and has a daughter, Linda, four. A teacher of English, he is, also, advisor of the FISHBOWL, the school yearbook. He is an active follower of all sports, but golf is the favorite. EVELYN STUART A.B. A new teacher, English, at Lanier Jr. this year, Mrs. Stuart was born in Albany, Georgia, but later moved to Dalton. Schooled at Tift College and Women ' s College of Georgia, she majored in French and obtained her degree. Hobbies include cooking, tennis, and horseback riding. HONORINE B. VAN ZANT B.S. Another veteran teacher at Lanier Junior having come here in 1949 when the school first opened, Mrs. Van Zant teaches science in room 137, her orginal room at this school. She likes to ski, fish, and boat, mostly at Lake Sinclair where she and her husband have a cottage. She attended Emory, Wesleyan, University of Georgia, and Mercer. Before commg here, she was at Lanier Senior from 1943. Previously she taught at John W. Burke, Decatur, Georgia, and Avondale Estates, Georgia. MARTHA J. MOSLEY A.B. In February of this year Mrs. Mosley came to our school to replace Mr. Alan Northington who assumed the duties of guidance counselor. Pre- viously she taught in Wilkinson County. Born in nearby Gordon, Georgia, she is married and has two young sons, one and seven. She obtained her degree from Tift College. Outside of teaching history she likes music, crossword and jigsaw puzzles. JEAN WRIGHT B.S. Newcomer Mrs. Wright teaches math in room 138. She is the mother of four children ranging in age from two to eleven. She attended Central Missouri State College which is located in her native state. She came to us from Henry Grady High School in Atlanta. She, also, attended Emory University in Atlanta where she ob- tained her degree. HARVEY WILSON COLLIER A.B. Teaching science and math at Lanier Jr. since 1961, Mr. Collier comes from Waycross, Georgia. He received his degree from Mercer University. He is married, and his favorite pa stime is fishing. GEORGE L. PHILLIPS L.L.B. Before coming to Lanier Jr. in January 1958, Mr. Phillips practiced law for individuals and corporations in Alabama and Georgia. He returned to teach math this year after a year ' s leave. He has attended Drextel Institute of Technology, University of Tennessee, University of Alabama, and Mercer University. A family man witli five children, four of them boys, he likes do-it-yourself projects and playing bridge. MARCEL B. HARRISON B.S., M.Ed. Formerly of the physical education department, Coach Harrison now in- structs in Driver Education, but still maintains some of his former coach- ing duties. He came to Lanier Junior in 1953 from Austin, Texas his native state. He attended Texas Christian University, Texas Wesleyan, and the University of Texas. He is married, and his hobbies include golf and fish- ing. MISS INA CLAIRE WATSON A.B. A new teacher on the staff this year, Miss Watson comes from Huntsville, Alabama. She attended Tifton High School and Mercer University where she obtained her degree. She teaches science and is advisor of the Science Club. Cooking, reading, music, and sports are her favorite outside interests E. D. TOLLERSON B.S., M. Ed. In his third year at Lanier Jr. , Mr. Tollerson teaches science and is known as quite a gardener as he and his boys raise vegetables and flowers on a plot outside the room. He was born in Franklin, Georgia, attended the University of Georgia, and likes to fish when he is not gardening. He has a son and daughter, both in college. Previously he taught at Gibson, Georgia. VIRGINIA S. WALTON B.S. Before coming to Lanier Jr. in 1962 to teach English and science, Mrs. Walton was instructor in physical education for girls in Bibb County Elementary schools. She has attended Georgia State Univer- sity, Columbia State U., Vanderbilt U., and Mercer U. She has two daughters, both of whom are college students. Cooking, gardening, and sports are other interests. MARIAN E. JONES A.B., M.A. Mrs. Jones is another teacher who came to this school when it first opened in 1949. A teacher of science in room 144, she is a native of Barnesville, Georgia. Before coming to Lanier Jr. , she taught at Wesleyan Conservatory, and is a former librarian at Gordon Military College. She obtained her A.B. degree from Wesleyan and her Master ' s from Mercer University. She has a married daughter who has three children. Hobbies include writing and gardening. ! Mr. Haines came to us from Lanier Senior in 1953 and except for a brief tenure in another school system, he has taught industrial arts here since. Born in Macon, he attended the local schools, including Lanier Sr. , and afterwards Georgia Southern College. He is married and has a boy 10, and a girl 7. Woodworking and electronics are his hobbies. MISS HILDA BEGGS A.B., M.R.E. A science teacher at Lanier Jr. since 1959, Miss Beggs was previously engaged in youth work. She is a local product having attended schools in Bibb County and also Mercer University where she earned the B.S. degree. She received the Master of Religious Ed- ucation from Southern Baptist Seminary. In addition to her teaching duties, she is the advisor of the Junior Hi-Y at our school. She likes swimming, fishing, sports of all types, and raising tropical fish. WARREN R. LEWIS B.S. A. Like Mr. Joyner, above, Mr. Lewis is a former student at Lanier Jr. and now a staff member with some of those who formerly taught him. He is the son of the first principal of Lanier Junior having attended while his father, W. L. LEWIS, was at the helm. A member of the industrial arts department, he teaches woodworking and metal shop. Coming to us in 1959, he is a graduate of the University of Georgia, is married and has two children, a boy and a girl, and he likes to fish and hunt. JERRY L. JOYNER Another of our industrial arts teachers, Mr. Joyner is not only a local boy who attended Bibb County schools, but attended Lanier Junior, and is now associated with some of his former teachers at Lanier Jr. He teaches draw- ing and leathercraft and has been with us since 1959. He attended Georgia Southern College, and hobbies include fishing, and all phases of industrial arts. He is married and has a dauahter. D. L. WIYGUL, JR. B.S. Mr. Wiygul came to this school in 1962 after graduating from Mississippi State University where he earned his degree. A member of the industrial arts depart- ment, he teaches electricity and basic radio. He was born in Fulton, Mississippi, is married, and counts electronics as his hobby. LOSSIE R. COLLINS, JR. B.S. Coach Collins came to Lanier Jr. as a physical education instructor nine years ago from Sulpher Springs High School in Jonesboro, Tennessee. He attended Milligan College in his home state of Tennessee. Coach Collins has been mentor of several successful football, basketball, baseball, and golf teams during his tenure here. He is married and has a daughter, Cindy who is five. Hunting and fishing, and golf are his outside interests. PHILIP W. McLEROY B.S. Born in Macon County, Georgia, Coach McLeroy attended Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, where he obtained the B.S. degree. In his second year of teaching P.E. at Lanier Jr., he assists in coaching various sports, and is fond of hunting and fishing. DANIEL L. BOLT B.S. A native of Lindale, Georgia, Coach Bolt, in his third year at Lanier Jr. , obtained his degree at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. Head football coach of the 8th graders, he has en- joyed much success. He is married and likes to read, hunt, fish. All sports hold great interest for him. W. C. JONES B.S. Coach Jones was born in Unadilla, Georgia, attended Oglethorpe High School in Oglethorpe, Georgia, and the University of Georgia. He came to Lanier Jr. in 1962 as instructor of physical education and to assist in coaching. He is married and has an infant son. Chief among his hobbies are hunting and fishing. DANNIE LEE McLAUGHLIN B.S. A native of Helena, Georgia, Coach McLaughlin came to our school in 1961. Colleges attended are Georgia South- western and Georgia Southern. In his third year as coach and P.E. instructor, he is married and likes sports of all types, fishing, and hunting. RUTH W. BENTLEY Although associated from time to time with Lanier Jr. since 1953, Mrs. Bentley became Assistant Librarian only last year. She is the wife of Thomas W. Bentley, chemistry teacher at Lanier Sr., who previously taught science at our school. The Bentleys have a daughter who is a student at Miller High. Mrs. Bentley was employed In the Roberta and Warner Robins Post Offices prior to coming to Macon as assistant postmaster and postmistress, respectively. MISS SARA LAMON A.B., B.S.L.S. Miss Lamon is another native Maconite on the staff of Lanier Jr. and attended Bibb County schools. She came to Lanier Jr. five years ago to assume the position of Librarian which she has held since. Previous experience includes Miller Senior High, Mary Washington College, Academic Library at Ft. Benning, and Wesleyan College. She obtained her A.B. from Wesleyan and theB.S. from Columbia University. Her outside interests include gardening, Georgia history, genealogy, D.A.R., and U.D. A. HERSCHELE. SIMMONS B.S. A. Mr. Simmons is the agriculture teacher for Lanier Senior and Junior, and Willingham Senior and Junior High Schools. He tias been associated with Lanier for seventeen years coming here shortly after graduation from the University of Georgia. He is the FFA advisor for Bibb County schools, is married, has three daughters, and likes to build furniture. TURNER M. GAUGHF B.M., M. Ed. A product of Albany, Georgia, Mr. Gaughf came to Lanier from Jonesboro, Georgia about 1950 to assume the position of Band Director of Lanier Senior and Junior High. He attended Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, and the University of Georgia in Athens. He has four daughters and one son, Pat, who is a student at Lanier Jr. Mr. Gaughf is president of Roblet Music Company, and tennis is his favorite sport. NETTIE HANSON Mrs. Hanson came to Lanier Jr. as lunchroom cashier in 1949 when the school first opened after being employ ed at Lanier Sr. from 1945. She is widowed and has a married daughter. Gardening is her favorite pastime. She calls Jonesboro, Georgia home and attended schools there. MRS. J. K. PATTILLO Mrs. Pattillo (left) was born in Macon, attended Gresham High School and Wesleyan College. She was dietitian at Lanier Senior from 1937 until coming to Lanier Junior in 1949. She has two married daughters, and likes to read and sew. KATHLEEN TWILLEY Mrs. Twilley, (right) a native of London, England, came to Lanier Jr. in 1955 as a lunchroom cashier, but shortly after became assistant dietitian. She is married and has a son in Lanier Senior, and a daughter born February 6 of this year. Outside interests are TV, movies, and traveling to Europe when possible.
