THE LEADERS Born in the backwoods, deprived of formal education, Abraham Lincoln was one of our country's greatest leaders. He will always be remembered for his tireless endeavors to maintain our country's unity. IN BATTLE General Ulyeses S. Grant General Robert E. Lee While they were cadets together at West Point, Lee and Grant never anticipated the forthcoming crisis which would force them to take opposite sides on the battlefield. Although the South possessed keen spirit, superior generalship, and better knowledge of the battle terrain, many major battles were lost toward the end of the war, because of insufficient funds, factories, and manpower, all of which the North had in abundance. Many years passed before the South was completely healed of her war and post war scars. As depicted in this painting, the veterans of that conflict knew better than all others that fundamentally they were brothers and were meant to live under one flag. .... that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth. Abraham Lincoln delivered his most famous and most stirring address in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in memory of the Union soldiers who had lost their lives at the battle of Gettysburg, only four months before. 6 l
