Although the South possessed keen spirit, superior generalship, and better knowledge of the battle terrain, many major battles were lost toward the end of the war, because of insufficient funds, factories, and manpower, all of which the North had in abundance. MacDonalll The North was able to rehabilitate itself soon after the surrender at Appomattox, whereas, the South was immediately plagued by greedy scalawags and carpetbaggers. Many years passed before the South was completely healed of her war and post war scars. As depicted in this painting, the veterans of that conflict knew better than all others that fundamentally they were brothers and were meant to live under one flag. .... that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.
