DEDICATION For his many fine traits of Christian character, for his unselfishness in giving his time and artistic talents to the activities that add to our knowledge and happiness, for his sympa- thetic understanding of our problems, and for his words of wisdom, we dedicate the 1959 ORACLE to one whom we love, admire and respect as a true gentleman. Mr. H. L. Weatherby [ 7 ] a- v 6. 0 a- FACULTY ’59 GUARDIAN ANGELS THE FACULTY ...........Your words can plant a dream, To sow a dream and see it spread and grow To light a lamp and watch its brightness gleam Here is a gift that is divine I know To give a child a dream. —Anne Campbell Mr. L. W. Douglas Principal Heading the fine faculty at Lanier, Mr. L. W. Douglas helps to make La- nier one of the best schools in the country. All of Mr. Douglas' accom- plishments certainly speak well for him. He received his masters degree in both history and secondary administration. Among the colleges Mr. Douglas has attended are Birmingham-Southern, the University of Chicago, and Colum- bia University. Before coming to La- nier, he taught at various schools, in- cluding Baldwin Junior High which was Lanier's first location. Above all, Mr. Douglas inspires both faculty and stu- dents to make their dreams realities. [ 10 ] Mr. W. E. Glazner Assistant Principal The hallowed halls of Lanier are cer- tainly brightened by the smile of its assistant principal, Mr. Glazner. Mr. Glazner attend- ed the Jacksonville Normal School and the University of Alabama and has received his Bachelor of Science and Masters degrees. Mr. Glazner is the assistant principal, but he also teaches geometry. He is certainly a favorite with the entire student body. Mrs. Cliff Harper Dean of Girls One of the most popular members of Lanier's faculty is Mrs. Harper. As the Dean of Girls, Mrs. Harper advises and aids the many students who bring their problems to her. She attended Alabama College and Vanderbilt University. She holds both a Bachelor of Arts and Masters degrees. Ev- eryone at Lanier certainly appreciates the kindness Mrs. Harper shows to both faculty and students. Our members are the officers from each class with the addition of three members-at-large from the Junior and Senior classes and two members-at-large from the Sophomore class. His willing heart promotes all school activi- ties,- one favorite daily responsibility is that of devotions in each home-room. His strong back assists the substitute teacher by acquainting her with the schedule of the class. His fast legs get the section report to the office on time. Although the duties of the section representative might seem minor, they combine into a unit which, along with the Student Council, forms a strong student government. Coach Wilson is coach of the basketball B-Team. He at- tended the University of Alabama where he was Captain and Quarterback of the 1952 team. One of the indispensible men in the Poet Line. His value was determined when he was out with in- juries. Ripped gaping holes in a sagging Dothan line to give Poet backs the chance to run the winning touchdown. Joe Scott—Guard Played offense and defense. Espec- ially alert at stopping enemy backs and jarring that ball loose. Hence called Bonecrusher . - Ronald Price—tnd One of the outstanding linemen. Saw plenty of action. Almost a sure bet for a great season next year. Bill Grubbs—Guard [ 164 ] uickie Calhoun—End One of the team's three year let- termen, Calhoun performed bril- liantly on both offense and de- fense. He formed the receiving end of deadly pass combination, and on defense enjoyed romps in opponents' backfields. Captain for 1959. Sure handed center. Helped keep Poet offense rolling smoothly. Chiefly responsi- ble for the jellybean. Al- ways a tough competitor. Larry Smelley—Center Phil Green—Tackle Sturdy two year letterman. Dis- played solid stamina on Poet for- ward wall. Hard hitting halfback, Newsom continually broke through opposing lines. Sparked the drive that beat Dothan. Captain—1959 Billy Frizzle—Back Ham Newsom— Halfback Played offense and de- fense. Often called upon to carry mail. Specializ- ed in quick kicks and extra points. Diagnosed enemy strategy. Broke up plays with regularity. ‘S [ 165 •] Joe Sadler—Quarterback Engineered Poet offense. Handled ball well and often slipped through enemy defenders. Especially adept at long passes. Leigh Gill—Quarterback In action, Gill exhibited a fine pass- ing arm and plenty of ability. Should be a top contender 'for next year's quarterback position. Billy Nunn—Quarterback Nunn is another prospect for sig- nal-caller next season. Hardhitting, fast and aggressive. l 56 ] Lewis Gayden—Halfback Saw much action. Ran well and proved slippery to hostile linemen. Outstanding prospect for next year's backfield. Alvin Jolly—Halfback Provided depth at halfback slot. Will see plenty of action next season. Ed Faulkner—Fullback Saw service at fullback and half- back slots. Proved valuable ball carrier and substitute for injured backs. Davis Brock—Tackle Saw plenty of action at tackle slot. One of next year's key hopes. Jerry Neal—End Although injured much of the sea- son, Neal performed well in the last few games. Skillful pass re- ceiver and fine runner. [ 167 ] Billy Britton—Guard Another man who figures promi- nently in next year's plans. Mike Miller—End Performed well when called upon. Provided depth at end position. Terry Taylor—Tackle Big reserve tackle. Provided that depth that always kept Poet line plugged. Sheldon Kushner—Guard Became one of the season's defen- sive standouts. Played especially well against Gadsden and Tusca- loosa. Royce Kershaw—Tackle Big, strong, tackle steadied Poet line all season. John Stuckey—Tackle One of the Poet's hardest hitting linemen. Stuckey helped maintain Lanier's reputation for solid de- fense. Bob Maddox—Tackle Helped steady that Poet line. In- valuable sub. Twig Branch—Guard Speedy and hardhitting. Noted es- pecially for smashing enemy ball carriers. A real terror. Tom Cardinal—Center One of Lanier's finest linebackers. Held opponents to minimum gains. One of the toughest competitors on the field. Tracy Fisher—Tackle One of the fine players who kept the Poet line plugged. Fierce com- petitor. No. photograph available. Bill Coon—Halfback Real hustler. Hardhitting, speedy back smashed for yardage. Show- ed great running form. Important prospect for next year. Charlie Savage—Guard Proved valuable as a substitute. Hard running, tough and durable. Will see plenty of action next year. LANIER vs. SELMA-SEPTEMBER 13 14-7 Lanier started off its football season by playing the Parrish High Rams from Selma. Sparked up by the spirit for winning the opening game, the Poets, taking advantage of all the breaks, played hard- fighting football. Even though the Rams played great football and tied the score 7-7, the Blue Tor- rent, recovering a fumble and running it back down the field, caught them by the horns and spun them for a 14-7 win. LANIER vs. PHENIX CITY—SEPTEMBER 19 27-6 On Friday night, the student section at Cramton Bowl was filled with excited Poets. The team had racked up an eleven game winning streak. From the moment the whistle blew, the team played down to business football. Good passing and deep run- ning penetrations put the Poets ahead at the half by a score of 14-0. This same fine playing was re- peated in the second half and at the end of the game the scoreboard read 27-6 in favor of Lanier. LANIER vs. DOTHAN-SEPTEMBER 25 24-19 The first half of the Dothan game was studded with bad breaks and disheartening plays. But the hard-fighting, high-spirited Poets came back in the second half to show the Dothan club that it isn't the easiest thing in the world to overcome the Big Blue. The offensive linemen punched gaping holes in the Tigers' line and the speedy backs ran the ball straight through them. Having recovered a Dothan fumble, the Poets took the ball on their own forty and bull- dozed it deep into Dothan territory. Minutes later the Poets reached paydirt and the game ended 24- 19 in favor of Lanier, proving that sometimes a Ti- ger's growl is worse than his bite. LANIER vs. VALLEY-OCTOBER 3 12-7 The fourth game of the Poets' eventful season was played against Valley High of Fairfax. Both teams played excellent football and the score in the early part of the third quarter read 7-6 in favor of Valley. But a great 59 yard run put the Blue ahead by six points. The extra point was missed but the good 'ole Poets won the game 12-7. [ 170 ] LANIER vs. RAMSEY-OCTOBER 9 7-13 After winning fourteen straight games, the injury stricken Poet team was forced to hand over a victory to the Ramsey eleven from Birmingham. The game went 6-0 in favor of Ramsey until the fourth period when hard running and exact kicking put the Poets ahead 7-6. The Poets in the stands, who were just about to burst their pen points, finally found a chance to relax. But it was short-lived because Ramsey scored the winning touchdown in the last 25 seconds of the game to form the upsetting score of 13-7. LANIER vs. GADSDEN-OCTOBER 17 13-13 In its first out-of-town game the team, slightly outweighed and not favored, came from behind to tie the Gadsden Tigers. The always wonderful Poet cheerleaders helped to spirit the team; while the team, on the field, continued, as always, to display that ever-present hard and rough football style. It seemed for awhile that the Poets had a victory, but the Tigers came back in the last quarter to tie the game 13-13. That's all right; they didn't beat us. LANIER vs. TUSCALOOSA-OCTOBER 25 14-12 Lanier's Homecoming celebration was saddened by the death of one of our finest football players. The team felt the loss keenly, but were all the more determined to win this one. Before an enthusiastic, pennant-waving crowd, the Blue Torrent engaged in a close conflict with a tough Black Bear team. By virtue of Frizzle's toe and some fine running by New- som, Lanier won a close tussle. LANIER vs. MURPHY-NOVEMBER 1 13-21 The Blue and White made the trip to Mobile with high hopes of defeating a powerful Murphy team. Our cheerleaders, band, and majorettes made a very fine impression in the port city. Unfortunately, the Big Blue just couldn't click. The Panthers took advantage of the breaks to come out on the big end of a 21-13 score. [ 171 ] Lanier quarterback, Joe Saddler, adds 6 points for the Poets by hard running. Mooneyham bowls over Lee tacklers in second quarter. LANIER vs. LEE-NOVEMBER 14 19-26 This was the big game. Both schools had want- ed a long time to see the clashing of the cross-city teams. The pre-game forecast, made by experts , predicted the game to end 27-7 in favor of Lee. Most people expected the Poets to get stomped . On the night of the game, excitement mounted in Cramton Bowl. The effect of the fine sportsmanship of the students and players lifted the moral of the team even higher than it already was. From the opening play, right through the remarkable jelly- bean special, up until the final whistle, the Poets exhibited a magnificent display of football. Even though the Generals won the game and evened the series 1-1, we must remember the immortal words of the Blue and White, Wait 'til next year .
