Sponsor Looking back on a year of many happy events, we see our Poet couple participating in the various phases of school life at Lamer, As we see them learning in the classroom, being inspected in Mili- tary, going to a dance, working through Lanier's club program, and cheering at the football games, it reminds us of our happy year at Lanier. CHILES HARRIS. U-rr iC V'' £p; TT i-O - irTT-i. y- rr7f THINK L FACULTY The ORACLE wishes to pay a tribute to the teachers of Lanier, who have done so much to make Lanier the fine school that it is. MR. L. W. DOUGLAS Principal Lanier is very lucky to have at its head, Mr. L. W. Douglas, who has done much to keep Lanier one of the best schools in the country. After at- tending Birmingham Southern, Colum- bia University, University of Chicago, he taught at Vinemont, Verbena, and Baldwin Junior High School. In our memories of Lanier, our principal holds a very special place because he has been a capable and understanding advisor, with a sense of humor. [ 10 ] FACULTY MR. W. E. GLAZNER Assistant Principal Mr. Gl'azner received his degree at the University of Alabama. After he had taught school in Cherokee, St. Clair, De Kalb, and Shelby Counties, Lanier was fortunate in getting Mr. Glazner as a mathematics teacher and assistant principal. Mr. Glazner will always be a favorite at Lanier because he always enters all his work with a smile for everyone. MRS. CLIFF HARPER Dean of Girls Mrs. Cliff Harper, our Dean of Girls, went to Montevallo and Vanderbilt Colleges. After teaching at Cherokee County High School, Mrs. Harper came to Lanier to teach English. Mrs. Harper left Lanier during the war years, but returned in 1950 to be- come our Dean of Girls. With this big duty, Mrs. Harper handles many miscellaneous jobs. She has been a big help to all the students as an advisor, someone the students can go to with their problems, however large or small. TOMMY GREEN Senior, Halfback Hard running and speedy — could go well inside or outside the ends — saw plenty of action — gave fine performance whenever called on — a popular and valuable asset to the team. MARLIN MOONEYHAM Junior, Halfback No adjective describes his value to Lanier's success — real bread 'n butter man — provided the power punch needed to put mediocre Sidney L. offense on the road — racked up important yardage with bull-like rushes — hard to bring down — broke loose many times after being, trapped — made All- City and honorable mention All- State. HENRY BOURNE Senior, Tackle Johnny-on-the-spot — was there when it counted most — recovered fumbles and caught many speedy opponents before they could do damage — scored 12 points which won one game and tied another — made All-City and All-State honor- able mention — received scholar- ship to Mississippi-Southern. The Poets took the opening kick-off and marched straight down the field to a quick six-pointer. After Selma caught the Poet defense napping for a 21 yard scoring scamper, the Torrent came back with a beautiful 47 yard pass play from Tommy Sewell to Gary Perry for a touchdown. In the third quarter Billy Frizzle scored from seven yards out ofter a fumble recovery by Dickie Calhoun. LANIER 12 - PHENIX CITY 7 The Blue Torrent avenged the lone defeat suffered in the last three years by ekking out a sluggish win over the stubborn Red Devils of Phenix City. After bein stopped on an opening drive to the five yard line, Lanier came back to score on a fourth down. Perry plunged into pay dirt. The final Poet score came in the second quarter after Henry Bourne blocked a punt on the Red Devil 19. Billy Frizzle went over from the 2 for the score. Minutes later a Phenix back shook loose for a 51 yard touchdown run to score the game's final tally. The second half was strictly a case of a powerful Lanier line holding repeated surges of the determined Red Devils. Jimmy Sharpe, Robert Parker, Cliff Russell, Henry Bourne, and John Seale led the game saving Poet defense. LANIER 7 - DOTHAN 0 Slush, drip, slide, swim — this was the story of the Tiger-Poet tilt on a roinsoaked gridiron in Dothan. Tommy Sewell's educated toe, Jimmy Sharpe's mag- nificent line play, and Henry Bourne's alert defense provided the slim margin of difference in a driving deluge that failed to dampen the spirits of the team, the cheerleaders, and the crowd. After a vicious and gruelling defensive first half with Do- than holding the upper hand, Lanier came back and with the aid of beautiful pressure punting by Sewell, managed to score a defensive touchdown in the third quarter. Opportunist Henry Bourne pounced on a Dothan fumble in the Tiger end zone for the lone tally of the game after Sewell had rolled a 59 yard punt dead at the Dothan 1 yard line. For his outstanding play Jimmy Sharpe re- ceived the lineman of the week award from the Birmingham News. LANIER 6 - VALLEY 0 Poet enthusiasm reached a low ebb as the vaunted Blue Torrent scarcely managed to sneak by the so-so Valley Tradesmen. Joe Scott saved the day twice as he came in to throw Valley backs for losses as the Tradesmen had penetrated to the Lanier 5 on two consecutive drives. With only two minutes left, Billy Frizzle pushed over for the winning tally in an other- wise boring tilt. IN REVIEW LANIER 21 - RAMSAY 7 The Blue and White took control at the kickoff and went on to monopolize play for nearly the entire game while stymying the Ram attack until Poet reserves took over late in the contest. Marlin Mooneyham really cut loose to lead the devastating Lanier attack. Tommy Sewell scored twice and Roy Mooneyham once with Tommy adding three extra points. LANIER 7 - TUSCALOOSA 7 For the second straight year the Poets and the Bears fought to a 7-7 deadlock. Henry Bourne came through with the lone score for Lanier by picking up a loose fumble at the Lanier 15 and racing all the way, 85 yards, for the T.D. A few minutes later Dickie Calhoun nearly repeated Bourne's feat but was caught from behind at the 10 yard line. This opportunity was spoiled by a fumble however, and Lanier got no closer to pay dirt during the remainder of the game. Tuscaloosa in the second quarter took advantage of a Poet fumble on the Lanier 21 and sneaked over a score in a fourth down pass. John Seale and Dickie Calhoun did a great job of con- taining the speedy Tuscaloosa backs. Though it would have been nice to win every game, it's cer- tainly no disgrace to tie a team such as the Bears in their own backyard. LANIER 7 - MURPHY 0 After a gruelling three quarters the Poets finally found themselves on the Murphy 3 yard line by virtue of a Sewell pass completion to Marlin Mooneyham. Three plays later, however, Murphy intercepted in the end zone and took over at the 20. Murphy fumbled and six plays later Billy Frizzle gunned over from the 3 and a Sewell extra point made the score read 7-0. Seconds before the final gun Henry Bourne saved the bacon with an alert recovery of a drive-ending Murphy fumble. The bruising Poet line led by Jimmy Sharpe and Cliff Russell limited the Panthers to a measley 44 yards on the ground. LANIER 40 - TALLASSEE 7 Marlin Mooneyham racked up two touchdowns and a total of 210 of Lanier's 305 yards rushing as Lanier romped over Hot O'Brien's hapless Tigers. Lanier's underrated offense finally exploded into a devastating machine with touchdowns by Roy Mooneyham, Gary Perry, Tommy Green, and Ronald Price. Tommy Sewell added the four point afters . LANIER 14 - LEE 12 PATERSON TROPHY The beautiful Paterson Trophy was donated by the Paterson family in memory of their late father, Mr. William W. Paterson, as a reward to the winner of the annual Lee-Lanier football classic. It is an alternating trophy which is kept for the entire year by the victorious school. This game will long be remembered as one of the finest played anywhere, any time, by anybody. Nothing was lacking. All the ingredients that go together to make up a real football classic were included in this magnificent spectacular — a packed house, thrills, color, sportsmanship, superb football action, fine bands and ardent enthusiasm on both sides. Marlin Mooneyham rose to the occasion and produced the 126 yards on 21 tries that made the difference. Both lines, blocking and tackling like demons, dominated play in the first half until Tommy Sewell, on a fourth down pass play, chose to run and skipped over for the first tally. Tommy also added the all-important extra point. The teams left the field with Lanier ahead 7-0. A fired up Lee team returned in the third quarter led by Carl Hobson and Jackie Bryant, and managed to go ahead 12 to 7 with the aid of several Poet fumbles. The chips were down and the situation looked grim, but the Big Blue came fighting back. In the most important play of the year Marlin Mooneyham cut loose in a magnificent triple reverse called The Mooneyham Special and sailed deep into General territory. The Poets rammed over for the deciding six-pointer with Roy Mooneyham going the crucial last two yards. The Poets really showed their great- ness by staging a calm and determined comeback after finding themselves behind for the first time all year. The Poet line played its usual magnificent game and, coupled with a surprisingly strong offense, comprised one of the greatest football combinations ever to grace this city.
