Montgomery The editors of The Oracle hove endeavored to present to you the story of Montgomery, past and present. The city that is now your home has been gracious mother to many peoples. First came the mound builders and then the Indians. In the sixteenth century explorers, traders, speculators, and squatters came from Europe. In the very early nineteenth century settlers came to found the two villages of East Alabama and New Philadelphia, which merged on December 23, 1837, and became the city of Montgomery. Montgomery grew and expanded; many homes were built; cotton and industry became im- portant industries. For entertainment there were boat rides on the moonlit Alabama River, plays at the old Mont- gomery Theater, dances, and picnics. An important event in the early history of Montgomery was the visit of General Lafayette in 1825.

Alabama | SJU E In 1847 Montgomery became the capital of Alabama. During the Civil War, Montgomery served as the first capital of the Confederacy. After the war came the Reconstruction Period. Slowly but surely Montgomery re- gained her strength. Today she is the progressive capital city of Alabama, continually growing and building. In our modern city there still remains an old-fashioned charm which makes her distinctive. On an early summer morning one can still hear the vegetable sellers with baskets on their heads going by and crying, Green peas! string beans! Okry! Green cawn! Dew bez! Near by one can still see ante bellum homes, turbaned mammies, and fields of cotton. Little barefoot boys still run to the swimmin' hole , and the spreading magnolias grow as green now as they ever did. We, the editors, know that the theme of this book will be very meaningful to you, both now and in the years to come.
