The city that is now your home has been gracious mother to many peoples. First came the mound builders and then the Indians. In the sixteenth century explorers, traders, speculators, and squatters came from Europe. In the very early nineteenth century settlers came to found the two villages of East Alabama and New Philadelphia, which merged on December 23, 1837, and became the city of Montgomery. Montgomery grew and expanded; many homes were built; cotton and industry became im- portant industries. For entertainment there were boat rides on the moonlit Alabama River, plays at the old Mont- gomery Theater, dances, and picnics. An important event in the early history of Montgomery was the visit of General Lafayette in 1825. Alabama | SJU E In 1847 Montgomery became the capital of Alabama. During the Civil War, Montgomery served as the first capital of the Confederacy. After the war came the Reconstruction Period. Slowly but surely Montgomery re- gained her strength. Today she is the progressive capital city of Alabama, continually growing and building. In our modern city there still remains an old-fashioned charm which makes her distinctive. On an early summer morning one can still hear the vegetable sellers with baskets on their heads going by and crying, Green peas! string beans! Okry! Green cawn! Dew bez! Near by one can still see ante bellum homes, turbaned mammies, and fields of cotton. Little barefoot boys still run to the swimmin' hole , and the spreading magnolias grow as green now as they ever did. We, the editors, know that the theme of this book will be very meaningful to you, both now and in the years to come. Faculty . Classes . Military............... Features .............. Clubs and Organizations Athletics Activities Patrons . The theme of our book is Montgomery, past and present. We dedicate this book to the future of I Montgomery in the hope that she may continue to grow in grace, prosperity, and peace. Alaboma's Department of Archives and History, the first department of its kind established by legislative action in the country, was erected as a memorial to veterans of World War I. The relics of Alabama's historical past, from the days of the red man to the present time, are kept here. It stands, a mecca for tourists and an outstanding memorial of which we Alabamians should be justly proud. FACULTY Faculty Years from now as we fondly recall our high school days, we Poets will find that many familiar faces pop into our minds. Our classmates. The football team. The cheerleaders. All these we will remember. There will be another group of faces we shall also vividly see again. These are the faces of our teachers, who not only helped us along the rugged road of book learning but also gave us much understanding of how to get along with others. To those of us who will look back with great love and pleasure on our school days The Oracle presents a portrait gallery of faces which comprised a great part of our high school life βa portrait gallery of our beloved teachers. MR. L. W. DOUGLAS Principal Mr. Douglas came to Lanier from Baldwin Junior High School in 1949. Previous to his teaching in Montgom- ery County, Mr. Douglas taught in Vinemont and Verbena. Being prin- cipal of Lanier is a hard job, for he must deal with large groups of people: teachers, students, and parents, be- sides taking care of the technical side of school. During his time here at Lanier, Mr. Douglas has truly done more than his share to keep Lanier one of the best schools in the country. MR. W. E. GLAZNER Assistant Principal Mr. Glazner, our ossistonf prin- cipal, came to Lanier five years ago. He earned his B.S. and M.A. from Alabama. Since then he has taught in Cherokee, St. Clair, DeKalb, Shelby, and Montgomery Counties. Besides his many duties as assistant principal Mr. Glazner also teaches a class of biology. Since he came to Lanier, Mr. Glaz- ner's ever-smiling face has become one of the best loved sights in our hallowed halls . MRS. CLIFF HARPER Dean of Girls Mrs. Cliff Harper, our dean of girls, was born in Pineapple, Ala- bama. She received her A.B. de- gree at Montevallo and her M.A. at Vanderbilt. She first taught at Cherokee County High School. In 1942 Mrs. Harper came to Lanier to teach English. During the war she was away from our hallowed halls for a few years, but she returned soon after the war was over. In 1954 she was appointed dean of girls, and since then has devoted her time to counseling and helping the girls of Lanier. ELOISE ANDREWS MARGUERITTE ARMSTRONG MR. J. T. Historians agree that few buildings have been the scene of more colorful or romantic history than Alabama's capitol, which also served as the first capital of the Confederacy. It is interesting to note that here Jefferson Davis took his oath of office as President of the Confederacy and that here the first Confederate Congress met. We, the Class of '57, with smiles, or yet a tear Shall swell with grateful, humble pride remembering our Lanier . Lanier so filled with all that's good and right and undefiled, Lanier, a temple where our gifts of love are humbly piled, A high cathedral showering down on all who dwell within The brilliant streams of Learning's light to fill men once again; Her hallowed halls enclosing still such memories cherished true. And nearly bursting with soul's flaming spirit pulsing through Toward thy great purpose. White and Blue, in tribute now may we. As followers in thy guiding light, forever kneel to thee. As the Poets excel in other phases of school life, so too can Lanier be proud of its excellence in scholarship. Fifteen of the Lanier Seniors were among the 7,500 students throughout the country who were named by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation as the finalists in its 1957 competition for four-year college scholarships. This is a wonderful recommendation for Lanier and an honor for the fifteen students. The Teague Home, located on South Perry Street, is now the State Chamber of Commerce Building. Continuously working to plan social activities, such as our New Year's Eve Ball, the Twirp Dance and the annual School Daze Mixer and to promote various activities as clean-up campaigns and welfare drives, it justly receives its deserving praise. Our members are the officers of each class with the addition of three members at large from the Junior and Senior Classes and two members at large from the Sophomore Class. They engineered a record of seven wins, two ties, and one defeat β a most enviable record for any team. Everyone thought the Poets were on their way to an undefeated season until the Phenix City Bulldogs caught the Laniermen on a cold night and hung a 19-7 defeat on them. At the first of the season it was generally believed that the Poets would not be strong, but as the season progressed our team was classified as one of the top combines in the State β all this, despite the fact that Lanier was hampered by injuries all year long. Certainly much credit goes to head Coach Bimbo Melton and his two assistants. Coaches Teel and Wilson. Also, praise must be given to the players who actually fought the battles. However, this year's squad has their work cut out for them. Last year's team finished second in the State tournament and Lanier produced the State champion. For the '57 golf season Leo Proffitt, pro at Woodley Country Club, will coach our team. He has a good corps of linksmen and should mold them into a fine aggregation. All compe- tition is in the form of match play. Page 157 Tennis Team Albert Thomosson The Tennis Teom like the Golf Team does not begin their season before The Oracle goes to press. Thus we are not able to comment on the record of our racket boys. Lanier has always had good tennis teams and this year should be no exception. George Bagwell and Joe Price, who are both returning lettermen, will carry the brunt of the burden. All home matches are played at the Montgomery Country Club. The present building, an impressive structure, is located on South Court Street. It was built in 1929. Remember September, the beginning of another year of fun and excitement at Lanier? These familiar scenes now bring back memories of the thrills and anticipations we felt as the good times began to roll. . The falling of the leaves meant football time was at hand, and we all held our hands high with L-L-LAN, l-IER. With the aid of our enthusiasm our football team was able to boast a very fine record this year. Off to a fine start we went, opening the school year with our annual School Daze Mixer. At the Mixer we witnessed a prevue of what was to come Little did we know that even more fun was in store than we had expected. Senior and sophomore girls can well recall the Senior Girls' Tea with its de- licious food, pretty dresses, and Getting to Know You conversation. I! SEPTEMBER At The Oracle Beauty Ball, decorated as Dreamland, the dreams of ten boys and girls who were chosen as the '57 Oracle Beauties, were able to come true. We enjoyed dancing on the patio after football games. Then there ore the ordi- nary scenes which bring happy memo- ries. The Thanksgiving Assembly seemed to surpass oil others with its message of brotherhood among all nations. The annual Man of the Year Banquet , sponsored by the Y.M.C.A., was attended by many Poets. A circus was the setting of the Senior Girls Bazaar. At the close of the football season our cheerleaders were awarded certificates to say Thank You from the team for their help in cheering them on! DECEMBER Christmas came and with it came the glow of bright tinsel and colorful decorations. The Y held its annual Christmas tree sale. Some homeroom sections shared with others as we remembered the true meaning of the holiday. The Christmas assembly was an inspirational and beautiful prelude to a wonderful holiday. ' OUVM COKMnTtC CHRISTMAS TREES CAMP ELSER Can we ever forget the an- gelic sound of the Glee Club's singing through the halls to tell us Christmas is here ? Then came the dances β the thrill of attending them and the fun of decorating for them. All in all, December was a bright, happy spot in our calendar of events. Another year begins, and with it exams. Oh, we studied so hard! Also we began 1957 by doing something for others in our Teens Against Polio cam- paign. Remember Balloon Day? We found time for fun, however. The Pea King and Queen ruled over the French Club Banquet. The Inter-Club Council led us in our celebration that exams were over at its between-semester barn dance. FEBRUARY Things changed somewhat at Lanier when February came, at least things changed for one week β Twirp Week. The week ended with a gala dance at which the Twirp King was crowned. The Oracle drive took place in February. We all remember the fun of basketball games. We were certainly proud of our fine team! At last March, full of activities, came. At the French Club's Mardi Gras our lovely Queen and her court were presented. Time for elections! The posters, the speeches, the hard work β and at last our next year's leaders were elected. The Blue and White staff took its annual trip to New York. What fun it was to promenade on Fifth Avenue! It was time for Youth Legislature, our opportunity to gain experience in govern- ment. MARCH APRIL April brought showers of moments to re- member. The Glee Club Concert its theme, Toylond Fantasy, the beautiful White Part the last time for the Seniors to sing The Battle Hymn The Juniors gave the Seniors a wonderful Prom. We'll never forget this last big Donee at Lanier! Our R.O.T.C. boys marched forward to a Federal Inspection. The Latin Club held a wonderful ban- quet this year!
