Last year he was line coach. COACH JAMES R. Jim CHAFIN comes to us fresh from an army tour right here at Maxwell Field. While at Maxwell Field Coach Chafin coached all the Base athletic teams and attained much success serving in this capacity. He played college football at Jacksonville State. It is made up of the officers of the student body, the officers of the three classes, the president of the section representa- tives, the faculty advisors, the Principal, the Dean of VVomen, the Dean of Men, and the Advisor of the Section Representatives. Throughout the year the Council undertakes many worthwhile proiects. Every summer, before school opens, the members congregate to discuss plans for the coming year, The first official duties are to clean the trophies and the trophy cases, and to make preparations for welcoming Sophomores. After many weeks of effort by the members, under the guidance of their indefatigible sponsor, Miss Kate Clark, the Council published the Student Directory, This was the most important undertaking of the ycar. The new year of i955 was greeted by the Poets and council members at a gala New Year's Eve Ball. This new year has proved to be a very successful one for the Student Council, Page 69 JUNIOR RED CROSS The old saying goes that happiness comes Through making others happy. The Junior Red Cross at Lanier proves this old proverb to be fact, not fiction. The club always seems to have some ingenius idea up its sleeve to make life more pleasant for unfortunate people. Therefore it is obvious that its interests are not only on a national scope, but on an international scope. The club plays Santa Claus to hospitalized veterans and plays the good fairy to children in foreign countries. The educational boxes are sent to and youngsters in poverty stricken countries The humane activities of this organization reflect the spirit of the entire student body and faculty of Lanier Carol Taylor holds the gavel at the meetings ot this group If Carol happens to be absent Jean Parker can capably pinch hut for her Busy Jean I-Iollon pens the minutes of each meeting There are so many activities to record for such a busy group' The Junior Red Cross sends Ann Hudson to be its mouthpiece at the Inter Club Council and Mrs Mary Nell Mills is the competent sponsor . 1 af' 'ww I :ig FIRST ROW Dollle Miller Martha Mott Dot Mulligan Eleanor Mosley SECOND ROW Mary Llmbrlck Dot Stewart Donny Bailey Georgia Lindsey Harlan Kimbro THIRD ROW Carol Covey Jean Parker Ann Henrv Ragnla Burford Caroll Taylor Jeanett Wumsko FOURTH ROW Margaret Yarbrough Bobby Felts Sylvia Jo Ingram Page 70 LATIN CLUB The Latin Club was organized tor the purpose of promoting interest in tlre Roman people and the Latin language One ot Laniers oldest groups it was organized in 1924 The government of this club is patterned after government of ancient Rome The consuls Rollin Walker and Judy Paterson raise the gavel at alternate meetings The club features interesting programs concerning Roman games myths and tales The task ot originating these entertaining and educational programs is assigned to Mary Alice Till Louise Hall and Joe Price Peggy Edney is the bookkeeper and the collector of revenue for the club The Latin Club functions under the capable sponsorship ot Miss Kate Clark and Mrs Eva Mooneyham The highlights ot the activities of the year are the Saturnalia celebration in December and the senior party in May Anderson Mark Anderson Sally Andrews Emily Baggett Fred Bailey Dorothy Bassett Julianne Baum Sylvia Beasley Susan Bedsole Carol Blackshear Sue Bowers Dick Bowling Umphrey Bowman Martha Brossell Billy Brock Irene Burtord Laura Butler Vivian Byers Larry Camp John Cannon David Carter David Clem Joe Clower Dorothy Coburn Emma Claude Collins Margaret Conner Johnny Covey Carol Crane Edith Crum Beverly Crump Elizabeth Crump Jane Davis Sally Day Marlin Dean Fay Dibble George Dismukes Bill Durr Virginia Edgar Barbara Jean Edney Penn Eskridge Nancy Evans Florence Fields Carol Foster Susan Frazer Hugh Gayden Gloria Gerson Linda MEMBERS Grable Shirley Gregory Jan Haddon June Hager Tony Hall Louise Hargrove Sue Helms Jane Henry Anne Howard Sandra Hudson Lynda Jacob Richard Johns Burns Johnson Julie Justice Judy Kaylor Mary Louise Laney Janice Langston Beverly Laslte Cobb Lawson Jule McKinney Anne McKinney Maude McNair Glenda Malone Wayne Page 71 Maynor Tom my Mohr Rose Moody Frank Morton Jerry Mott Martha Newsom Libby Nicrosi Charles Nolen Roy Pannell Henrietta Parker Jean Parks Jane Paterson Jane Paterson Joy Paterson Judy Paul Linda Pearson Ellzabeth Peckinpaugh Helen Price Joe Rice Nell Raton Sydna Sarvay Cornelia Saunders Barbara Scheuer Harriet Scott Susan Screws Jo Shepherd Suzan Simpson Marcia Simpson Wayne Smith Bebe Spencer Lee Spurlock Tommie Stovall James Thigpen Patsy Thomas Mary Ellen Till Mary Alice Tyson Ellen Walker Rollin Washington Terry Watson Edith Wilkinson Jane Williams Ann Williams Eleanor Williams Pamela Witmer Rebecca Wooley Gayle Youngblood Jane . . . . . The highest scoring cadets are placed on the team, This year there are only three members of last year's team left. Each team member spends several hours a week on the range developing his marlcsrnanship. The team has tired matches with the two County High Schools of Tampa, Florida. Lanier lost one match by one point and won the other by 413 points. In addition to these matches, the Rifle Team has fired in the Third Army R.O.T.C. Competition against the other high school units in the South, Although the results of this match haven't been determined, in last year's firing our team was first in the Third Army Area and twelfth in the whole nation. There is no chance of getting the Thespians confused with any other club at Lanier, because the Thespians are a special group-the elite of stage and theater. The feeling of drama, with all its life and sparkle, is wrapped up in this club. Each spring the Thespian Club gives proof of the outstanding dramatic talent of its members. The annual play is one of the big events of the school year. Every member of the club has a share in the production-whether it be as star or stagehand. Act well your part, there all honor lies. The Inter-Club Council has a very worthwhile purpose, which is to promote and coordinate ace tivities among the various clubs at Lanier. This council serves as a regulator tor the clubs. Although the inter-Club Council was organized only last year, it has really been a great aid to the clubs at Lanier. The council is composed of representatives from the various clubs, with Mrs. Grove as The sponsor. hail If SPANISH CLUB There is a gay and festive group of caballeros at Lanier known as the Spanish Club. This club creates interest in our neighbors to the South with their vivid and illuminating language. While joining them in the Latin rhythms of the Marioshi Band, we would eat tortillas and chili. The leader of the testivities is Senor George Goodwin, and his able assistant in charge ot the exciting entertainment is Senorita Betty Rosa. Senorita Elmore Bartlett writes the menus and Senorita Marilyn Rice takes care of the checks. Senora Heustess and Senora McClurlcin are the head chefs. The numerous festivities of the year are highlighted by the Pan-American Day Banquet in April which exemplifies the goodwill created by the club and serves as a reminder ot the club s motto: Siempre untos- Always faithful.
