THIS YEAR WE, THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1948, WISH TO DEDICATE OUR ORACLE TO ONE OF THE FINEST INDIVIDUALS OF LANIER, MISS GUSSIE HARRIS. SHE HAS FOR YEARS SERVED LANIER AS ONE OF ITS BEST TEACHERS, INSTRUCTING THE PUPILS NOT ONLY IN ENGLISH, BUT IN THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF EVERYDAY LIVING. SHE HAS BEEN NOT MERELY A TEACHER, BUT A LOYAL AND HELPFUL FRIEND, REPROVING US WHEN NECESSARY, ADVISING US WHEN WE WERE IN TROUBLE, AND REJOICING WITH US WHEN WE WERE HAPPY. HER TIRELESS ENERGY IN THE CLASSROOM, HER FRIENDLY TEASING, AND HER BLESS YOUR PESKY HEART! HAVE LEFT INDELIBLE IMPRES- SIONS ON OUR HEARTS. WE WISH WITH THESE FEW WORDS, HOWEVER INADEQUATE, IN SOME SMALL MEASURE TO EXPRESS THE ESTEEM AND DEVOTION THAT WE HAVE FOR OUR OWN MISS GUSSIE. And soon they fall into a stream Which flows, at length, to sea. The little leaves sail merrily Along the unknown stream, And soon they hear adventure call, And each beholds a dream. The dream describes the path they go- lf shows them Hate and Pride, And Sorrow, Fear, and Burdens great. Which in the stream abide. The vision then includes the sea, Where Peace and Love abound— Where Happiness attained from Work, And Hope for Life are found. One leaf, discouraged by the things He first saw in the dream. Forsakes the journey to the sea. And sinks into the stream. The other leaf, emboldened by The hopes of things to be, Accepts the challenge made by Life, And hurries toward the sea. That vision comes to each of us As now we leave the Tree. O, Maker, grant that we may choose To reach the Mighty Sea. -M. M. S. Pag« 51 POEM % IDEAL SENIOR GIRL ... Ladies and gentlemen, today we're Here To give you the ideal girl of Lanier. Our recipe is simple indeed. Listen attentively; here's all you need: First take the wit of Dorothy G. And then the popularity of Martha Sue B. Then combine the athletic ability of Pat B. With the friendly ways of Wimpy C. Betty Ann Overton's dimples we'll use Along with Maureen's dancing shoes And next mix Georgia M.'s gift of art With Mary Mac Shepherd's brain so smart, Add Carol Arnett, she's the beauty. And Joyce Harris, such a cutie. The figure of Theresa S. And Jane Woolfolk's attractiveness We'll take a pinch of Jean McCann's vim Mixed well with the grace of Jeanine M. We'll need dependable Katherine P. As well as original Beverley Ann B. Stir in Glenn A.'s personality And then Jean M.'s vitality. We'll take Genevieve's shining hair And Doranne B.'s complexion fair. Adding Doris L.'s winning way And Bobbie H.'s cute little Hey. Combine May L.'s smile so dear And Virginia F.'s laugh ringing clear. From Nancy Jane we'll take her clothes. And from Ann Smith her cute little nose. Adding Barbara Whiddon's sweet way; That will make her stand out any day. The dignity on Margaret G.'s part, And Nancy W.'s sincere heart. Next we'll take Miriam F.'s eyes— The ones that cause terrific sighs. Add the talent of Ruthie R. Which is heard of near and far; Last Martha S.'s determination. This completes our new creation. Take a big spoon, give a whirl. And then you have our Ideal Girl. -SUE KYZAR, RAE RITA KREISMAN. Page 52 IDEAL SENIOR BOY ... There comes a time at the end of the year When we must choose from the boys at Lanier, The best of their qualities making complete An Ideal Boy with none to compete. He has black wavy hair like Howard P., The dark brown eyes of suave J. C, Added to this is Bill Britton's smile And the clothes of Boobie to keep him in style. Herman, Harry, and Carl are samples (Though we could find many examples) Of the handsome looks and wide appeal Which must accompany our ideal. Besides his appearance he must have brains With his studious work our respect he gains, Such a description seems to favor Two fine boys, Larry Sellars and Frank Shaver. At senior proms and dances many. Like Robert H., and Bobby C, he'll outdance any. With talents abundant Bill Teate at the keys. Cartoons by Gus are drawn with ease. Glee club songs with Jim singing bass, In music and art our ideal keeps pace. You say he lacks color? We disagree. Hilary Allen and Calhoun are examples to see. We must imagine he makes friends with ease, Has personality-plus, Sammy if you please! Now our ideal, in the field of sports. Plays like Carrol and Ray on the tennis courts, His football standards are kept high. With the skill of Emory and Billy Y. Take the charm of Billy Ward, the ways of Whit, These traits mentioned they easily fit. Walking in the halls, is that laughter we hear? Chicken or Bennie must be near. Each has a wit we'll want to add. To insure alertness in our lad. Changing to character, the one who has led, His fellow students, there's only one Ted! From the senior boys at Lanier, We have chosen the outstanding to be placed here. These qualities combined deserve to rate As the Ideal Boy of '48. —RUTHIE RAPP, BETTY ANN OVERTON. Finding our classes and getting used to the building were very hard for us those first few weeks, but soon we began to feel ourselves a part of Lanier. Our first year was filled with many new experiences. Since this was the year in which the war ended, the pre-war clubs and organizations were revived. Among these were the Student-Faculty Council and the Blue and White. All too soon the first year was gone forever, and we realized that our happy Sopho- more days were over; the next year would be one of more seriousness and hard studying. The next fall we returned as proud Juniors. We really buckled down more than we had previously and finally managed to get by, despite such difficulties as those Canter- bury Tales. The football games were even more thrilling during our Junior year,- we cheered enthusiastically for those touchdowns. Our hearts swelled with pride as we sang our Alma Mater. We had come to love Lanier very dearly, and it was sad to realize that the next year was to be our last at our beloved school. Lanier was everything to us during our Senior year. As we really learned to study in earnest, and tried to do our best in backing Lanier—the team, the cheerleaders, and all school organizations—we looked forward to the time when we would put on those caps and gowns. There was, however, a leaden drag to our feet as we went through those beloved and familiar halls. It was going to be very hard indeed to part with our dear school. We put everything we had behind our yells at football games, for we knew that this was our last chance to show our team that what they stood for was what we were backing with our whole hearts. Always through life we shall take our memories of three happy years at Lanier. -RAE VENABLE, JOAN GREGORY, BETSY ROST. Page 56 SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Sitting in a cozy chair by a glowing fire, in the year I960, I think about my present circumstances and wonder about those of my school friends. I have just returned from New York where I have ended my engagement as the star in Never Amber, produced by Travis Roper. Picking up the Montgomery Advertiser, I am surprised to see that the editor is now Joanna Breedlove, with Sara McKee and Katrina McArthur as associate editors, and Jerry Black as the society editor. The headlines read, Margaret Bryars, World Famous Scientist, invents new pocket-size mind reading device for students. As I read on, I notice a picture of the newly appointed ambassador to England, Jimmy Endress. I turn over to the sports page and begin reading Sporting Rays, written by Billy Ray Lassiter. The article went on as follows: Henry Knighten has just set a new record for the 440-yard dash. Walter Lee Owens and Foots Bauer have nosed out all competition in the U. S. Doubles Tennis Tournament. On the same page the article Women in Sports by Lela Mosley announces the new physical education teachers for Lanier. I am amazed to find that they are Lore Henderson and Ann Pilcher. The comic strip Reba, Queen of Sheba by Reba McAllister proves that she is still trying to make everyone laugh. Gloria Donnelly is her assistant. I came next to the social section where I notice that Margie McGinty and Milton Mc- Kinney and their adorable twins Mike and Spike have just returned from a visit to the fashionable La Rosa Hotel, owned by Frank Rosa. In the column Party Patter mention is made of an exclusive party at Robbers' Roost given by Elaine Payne, celebrating the return of Gene Ellis from an expedition hunting orchids in Tasmania. Among those returning with him were Sara Nell Howell, Fred Perry, and Betty Jean Clements. I also see an ad advertising Chocolate Covered Pills sold by Jimmy Dailey and William Curry. I put down the paper and turn on the television set. The familiar voice of Doyle Elmore announcing a fashion show comes over the waves. On the screen next appears Page 57 Gene Foster describing the dress models, Betty Norman, Nell Pierce, Betsy Rost, Catherine Warr, and Flee Howard. Gene comments that the gowns are originals of the famous New York designer, Charles Edward Campbell. The judges are Dan Lewy, Sanver Smith, Billy Payne, Gene Eates, and Bill Callahan. Next come the hats created by Saralee Clements and modeled by Bobby Martin, Patty Clinton, Mary Dean Collins, Betty Harris, and Irma Hussey. Gene names some of the famous celebrities in the audience. Among these are Delores Sherer and Charles Yarbrough, directors of the dancing studio, Tipsy Taps, and also Julia Patterson, a famous psychologist with one of her patients, John Dillon. Jimmy Ealdwin, a prominent lawyer is there with his secretary, Jean Gregory. The last familiar name is that of Louis Faulkner, the author of the popular novel, My Buddy, which is the account of her long friendship with Frieda Smith. Another reminder that I'm back in my old home town is the phone call I receive from Patricia Dawkins, an old chum. She invites me to have dinner with her at the Twin Derby, owned by Tommy and Warty Tyson.. As we enter the night club the door is opened for us by the doorman, Lawrence Jones. Jack Wood conducts us to our table where Sonny Raines, the waiter, takes our order. Sonny tells us that the head chef is Bernard Miller and his able assistant is Rosamond Graham. At another table we see Jeanne Henderson and Martha Sue Pace and notice that they have remained good friends through the years. The lights dim and Jimmy Sheehan steps into the spotlight. He sings the delightful song, Away From You, written by Frank Riggs. The orchestra is conducted by Jimmy Addison, and the pianist is Betty Sue Kelly. Stopping Angeline Sims, the cigarette girl, we buy some chewing gum. On the wrapper is written Chew Christie's Chickle. I gather that Tommy Christie is the manufacturer. We see Philip Welch, the janitor, standing by the checking window. Philip is flirting with the hat check girl, Pat Trousdale. My visit is now over and I am returning to New York. I think about all of my old schoolmates that I have seen or heard about, and I realize that time has brought about many changes since my high school days in Lanier. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Page 58 Lyric by HOY TURK ILL GET BY (As Long As I Have You) Music by FRED EL AHLERT ke JUNIORS OFFICERS RICHARD HOLDER . . .. When we were lowly Sophomores The road seemed long and dreary, The future seemed so slow to come The waiting made us weary. But when the Juniors we became The days just whizzed on past. Then suddenly,- in nothing flat, Our Final Year ... at last! Just one more year and we'll be gone From this old school so dear. Another year and we shall be The Alumni of Lanier. Two Sophomores were talking of their problems at our school; They spoke of things they knew they had to face. The problem which was mentioned first was how to find their rooms, And next they wondered how they'd like each class. The Sophomores were filled with dread when thinking of exams— If only they were sure that they would pass! Just two semesters later, in the merry month of May, These same two Sophomores again I saw— And yet, they were so different that I hardly knew 'twas they. For confidence replaced their look of awe. I glanced around and saw their classmates looking that way too; Each one had conquered that first doubt of fear. A great school spirit had been born within the Sophomores, And now they understood and loved Lanier. -MARY MAC SHEPHERD. A F O O T B A L L 1948 FOOTBALL HISTORY Although starting off the season rather sluggishly, the Lanier Poets ended the season with a bang by defeating some of the leading teams of two states. By downing Wood- lawn, Tallassee, and Sidney Lanier of Macon, Georgia, Coach Jim Ryba's Poets showed that they really had the will and spirit to win ball games. Statistics show that the Poets scored 136 points to 76 for the opposition, which shows that the Blue Torrent didn't do as bad as the record implies. The Poets downed a stubborn Alex City team by a 6-0 margin but ran into trouble against a powerful Gadsden eleven, who defeated us 13-0. Still unable to click, the Poets ran info more trouble against a strong Tuscaloosa eleven, who handed us our second defeat of the season. But, in the next game which was against Selma, the Poets bounced back to defeat a weak Selma machine, 32-0. The Poets dropped a close one to Phenix City 19-12. It was close but the Poet eleven couldn't stop the Red Devils. The Poets started to click in earnest the next week by downing a mediocre Murphy High eleven by a 20-0 margin. In losing to Pensacola High School, the Blue Torrent dropped a heart-breaker. Bad weather hampered the Poet attack greatly. Page 117 The Blue Torrent staged a brilliant come-back by defeating a highly favored Woodlawn eleven by a 20-7 margin the next week. The next game is history. The Poets cut the string of Tallassee victories at 56. In doing this, the Poets made the sports pages of some of the nations leading newspapers. School spirit was at its peak in this game. The squad journeyed to Macon, Georgia for the next tilt and ended the season by handing the Macon team a 19-6 shellacking. This year's team was especially fine which makes it hard to single out any outstand- ing players, but the entire first team, Henry Knighten and J. C. Sellers, ends; Bobby Toylor and Ed Bauer, tackles,- Jack Wood and Emory Folmar, guards; Center Billy Yarbrough, and backs, Side Coleman, Homer Meads, Dick Chesser and Harry House, de- serve a lot of credit. The Poet scoring parade was as follows: Touchdowns: Knighten 7, Meads 5, Chesser 4, Coleman 3, Watlington 1 and Sellers 1. Coleman passed to Knighten for 5 of his seven and to Watlington for his. Extra Points: Chesser 8. Safety: Sellers 1. Al- though Chief came out just after the season opened, he moved up in the ranks until he started in the last two games. J. C. was fine on de- fense and offense. Senior, 178 pounds. Guard. Emory lettered in football all three years while he was at Lanier. He was selected second on All-State in '46, he was selected Captain for the '47 team, he was selected on the All-City first team in '47. Senior, 198 pounds. Center. Co- captain and first string center, Billy started most of the games this year, but injuries hampered him some. He made second string All-City team in '47. Page 120 SID COLEMAN Junior, 156 pounds. Halfback. Sid was an important man on the team this year. His passing, running and kicking were exceptional. He was selected on the All-City team this year. HOMER MEADS Junior, 158 pounds, Fullback. Meads worked from the halfback slot at the first of the season, but when Coach Ryba needed a hard-driving fullback Meads was changed over. He proved to be a big gun in the Poet backfield. Being a Junior he will be back next year. HARRY HOUSE Senior, 170 pounds, Quarterback. Harry made first string and letter- ed in '45 and '47, being in the Marines in '46. He made all-state in '45 at the halfback position. He was converted to quarterback during the '47 season. CHARLES WISE Junior, 188 pounds. Tackle. Char- ley, a very important player, was stopped by a neck injury but it did not keep him from the line-up long. He made All-City Tackle. ED BAUER Senior, 180 pounds. Guard and Tackle. Foots proved to be an important cog in the Poet line this year, although an old knee injury hindered him some. He will be missed next year as he is a Senior. HENRY KNIGHTEN Senior, 160 pounds, End. A Junior letterman and the fastest man on the team, Henry was the high scorer this year. He made All-State in '47, All-City, and Honorable Mention for All-Southern. BOB TAYLOR Junior, 165 pounds. Tackle. Bob made the starting line-up this year and was a stand-out all season. Being a Junior he will return next year and will form part of the nucleus of the '48 team. FRANK ROSA Senior, 150 pounds. Quarterback. Frank saw plenty of action this year, although he was not the starting quarterback all season. He was relied upon when the coaches wanted to keep the other team guessing. His stand-out game was probably with Lanier in Macon, Ga. Frank will not be back next year as he is graduating. PAUL CRASHUL Senior, 160 pounds. Halfback. Paul alternated with Coot in the halfback slot. He was one of the speediest runners on the team. Page 121 TOMMY TYSON Senior, 165 pounds, End. Tommy made first string this year. He was excellent on defense as well as of- fense. He started in several games. TED COPELAND Senior, 160 pounds. Tackle. Theo , a Junior letterman has de- veloped into one of Lanier's de- pendable players. He is President of the L Club. CARL WEAVER Senior, 165 pounds, Tackle. This was Carl's second year in football, having made his letter last year. His fine defensive play stood out all season. TALMADGE SMITH Junior, 170 pounds. Tackle. This was Talmadge's first year at foot- ball and he made a good impression on the coaches. He will be back next year and will be counted on heavily. RED CARR Junior, 238 pounds. Tackle. This was Red's second year in football and he was a valuable asset to the Poet line. Although he was not a starter this year he will be back next year and will probably make the first team. JACK WOOD Senior, 165 pounds. Tackle. Jack was one of the best linesmen on the squad. He played fine ball all year. He made his letter as a Junior. Page 122 BOS FARRIS FRANK COPELAND WALTER TYSON Sophomore, 155 pounds. Center. Curly played good ball while he was in the game. He will be in- strumental in shaping the '48 squad. Sophomore, 180 pounds. Guard. Although this is Frank's first year in football at Lanier, he made the second team and filled his position very ably. Senior, 165 pounds. End. Wardy was a very good second string end. He took over Knighten's position when he needed rest. JIMMY ENDRESS Senior, 140 pounds. Center. Although Jim was not as heavy as some on the team, he could bring down a 200-pounder easily. He was one of the hardest fighters on the team. He is graduating. CHARLES SCROGGINS Junior, 145 pounds. Halfback. Scroggins was used alternately at the halfback spot this year. This second string player saw plenty of action. He will be seen on the gridiron for Lanier again next year and should make the starting team. GUY WALLER Junior, 155 pounds. Fullback. Although Guy did not see too much action this year, he, be:ng a Junioi, will be counted on heavily next year. BASKETBALL '48 The 1948 Poet Basketball machine has many fine cage prospects. Although only one letterman from the '47 squad is returning, Coach Angelich is doing a fine job in molding uture cagers. At the first call, more than 40 candidates responded and from these, 13 have been picked to perform on the A team. The B team has many fine performers, some of whom should make the varsity before the season is over. To date, the Poets have played 2 games, defeating Greenville and Orrville to the respective tunes of 43-14 and 58-38. Although the team is rather green, we are looking forward to many more victories. Page 128 DOUGLAS McBRIDE JOHN DILLON SID COLEMAN DANIEL FRANCO Poge 129 LEON FRANKLIN GERALD AUSTIN BILL JOINER DONALD BROWN CHARLES SCROGGINS RICHARD HOLDER Pog« 130 CHICKEN HARPER KENNETH DAY TRACK CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM This year, for the first time in Lanier's history, the Poets had a cross-country team. This team consisted of Aubrey Arnold, Billy Ray Laseter, Alan Craig, John B. Stone, Royal Stevens, Dean Boatner, Max Wells, and Gene Arnold. Although participating in only two meets, the Poets made a fine showing. On Thanksgiving Day, the team journeyed to Mobile, where Lanier swept the 2 mile run, Aubrey Arnold took first place with Bill Laseter second, and John B. Stone third. All three received trophies. The Poets also ran in the three-mile road race in Birmingham on December 6. Al- though running against many experienced runners, the Poet team placed third. Although there were only four letter men returning from the '47 track squad, the '48 season looks very bright. As this goes to press, there are many prospctive thinly clads already getting into shape, and the '48 season should be the best one at Lanier yet. Page 131 SUMMARY OF TENNIS, 1947 Through the cooperation of It. Col. Andrew Evans of Maxwell Field, several members of the faculty, and about a half-dozen Lanier tennis enthusiasts, the Lanier tennis team was revived after an absence of many years. Col. Evans provided excellent coaching, and as a result, the team was able to compete with the best of the scholastic net teams in the State, winning four of its seven matches of the 1946-47 year. The five downed Wood- lawn High twice, Sylacauga and Andalusia once each; while bowing to Sylacauga once and to Phillips High's State Championship team twice. The team showed up favorably in the State Interscholastic Tournament at the close of the season. The net team opened their 1947 year by routing Woodlawn and Sylacauga by re- spective scores of 4-0 and 4-1. Since the identical team is remaining at Lanier for 1947- 48, the spring season is regarded with much anticipation. The members of the tennis team are Hilary Allen, Frank Shaver, James Cogdell, Jimmy Addison, J. C Sellers, Ray Evans, and Carroll Dailey. Page 132 GIRLS’ ATHLETICS GIRLS' PHYSICAL EDUCATION AT LANIER One of the most enjoyable subects at Lanier is Girls' Physical Education. The girls have such a variety of sports to choose from. In the early fall and spring, tennis, soft- ball, volley ball, and archery are favorites. In cold weather, the modern well-equipped gym offers a wide variety of indoor sports. Basketball is the most popular of these, followed by bowling, indoor volley ball, ping pong, and tumbling. The Physical Education course has an important place in the program of many Lanier girls. Not only do they learn the technical points of a game, but they also learn good sportsmanship.
