We 'Q CLASS OFFICERS Gordon Meriwether President Shirley Gunter Secretary Devon Cook, Vice President CLASS HISTORY Dear Lanier though fleeting time May bear us far away from e Forever in thy hallowed hal s Each heart will dwell in loyalty Faithful to the Blue and white We will be And before thy shrine of krowledge We will kneel to thee As I clutched my diploma tightly and realized that this was the last time that I would sing our Alma Mater song as a student the memory of the past three years swept before me It seemed only yesterday that my friends and I first walked meekly through the portals of Lanier For a moment I saw us all scurrying around from one wrong room to another trying to avoid the nonchalant upperclassmen I remembered still with terror my first experience in the lunch room the enormous line that extended to the sidewalk the long wait ard after I had at last gotten my lunch the ringing of the bell that made me leave my food untouched and dash to my next class only to find that it was time for recess I recalled briefly the studies the football games the assemblies the rulles and our wonderful Christmas Pageant Next I visualized us as Juniors casting superior glances at the unfortunate rats and meeting our friends of the past year Even now I could not resist the temptation to smile at my recollection of a freshman in one of my study halls who was as startled as I had been when he first heard the public address system For a time we went unconcernedly about our daily pursuits Then came December 7 s as well as fire drills and the R O T C gr and grew and GREW Before I realized it spring had come and an electron of the senior clJss off: ers to lead us during our last year was being held Then before the last scere had faded away another picture wiftly took its place There we were at last seniors that positon we had so coveted for the past two years Early in the year we began studying in earnest and taking a keen interest in school affairs This year was crammed with events bath great and small I Il always remerrber the negro man who climbed the flag pole during the first week of school the group cf students who started a petition to get out early for the Chr stmas holidays These however are only minor occurrences that filled the gaps between the more important things There were victory drives committees senior meetirgs and bandage rolling Suddenly I was startled into the present by a nudge from the boy on my left and brave y courage through each threat ning fear We will hold when we begin Our lives anew Memories of thy shelt ring walls And of thy friendships true LANIER , 1 ' , r ' - ' - I th e. Immediately winning the confidence and respect ol their charges, the two nenters were able to get the utmost from the team. Lanier, hcwever, was laced with a Herculean taslc Nine ct the finest prep school teams in the :tate had been scheduled as opponents ter the Poet gridders. Furthermore Coaches Ryba and Stapp were working with an inexperienced ball club. Six memlicrz ot the l94l starting eleven had grad' uated, Many more reserves were gene. The live returning rcgularsflnlalfbacks Bill l-ligdon and Jack Qutland, Guards Phillip Poundstone and Charles lvlcGlynn, and End James Warren, formed the nucleus of the '42 squad, The six remaining posts were filled by three returning reserve lettermen and three firit-year youths, Richard l-lalland John Stephens, both letternsen, ioined Rutland and l-ligdon in the starting baclctield. Frank Hayes, a non-letternran reserve carryoter, moved up to the number one center spot. Frank Barnett and James Cox, two newcomers, occupied the vacant tackle and end positions, respectively. The regulars were aided by a squad of reserves which made up for its lack of experience with its aggressiveness. With this little band of fighters the Poets waded through the best competition the state had to offer and came out with colors flying. More than a few members ct the l942 squad are now serving in some branch ol the service. His most creditable asset was block- ing. The l85-pound senior was probably the most out- standing in the line. JAMES COX, END-His great speed aided this 180- pounder in catching passes and tackling under punts. Cox was injured in mid-season and never fully recovered. Lanier missed the great defensive play of the rugged flankman in the last few games of the season. Fine on end-around plays. A senior. MAX BAYNE, END-When Cox was iniured Red took over a starting post and performed like a veteran. Picked up fumble and dashed 21 yards to score Poets' lone touchdown in 6-0 win over Pensacola. EARL KREIS, END-Only a sophomore, Kreis turned in a fine all-round iob as reserve left end. Played almost as much as starter. Kreis was best on defense. Will be counted on next season. EVERETT CHAMBERS, END-Began the season as an ob- scure reserve but blosscmed in latter stages of seascn. His aggressiveness made him gcod defensive flankman. BLAKE HARPER, TACKLE-Blake was The only returnirg tackle of the six in '4l. Light for a tackle-l68 pounds- made up for lack of weight with his scrappy play. Joined the navy at the close of the season. FRANK BARNETT, TACKLE-Only a sophomore, Big Frank crashed the starting lineup in the first game and was a seasonvlong standout. Was largest man cn the squad at 190 pounds. Barnett will be counted on heavily next season. OLIVER HALL, TACKLE-Oliver reported as an end can- didate but was soon switched over to tackle. Standing six feet, four inches, he could reach out with his long arms and pull down opponents. WALTER WILSON, TACKLE-Tipping the beams at l75 Walter was perhaps the most rugged tackle on the team. He always played for keeps. Following his graduation in January Walter enlisted in the Air Corps. DAN BROCK, TACKLE-This l85-pounder played some fine defensive ball for the Poets. His jarring tackles stood out. Brock is a senior. CO-CAPTAIN PHILLIP POUNDSTONE, GUARD-A great cffensive player, Phillip was named on the All-State squad lsecond teaml. Poundstone always had a fighting spirit even when defeat seemed inevitable. The l8O-pound senicr has been a starter for two years. CHARLES MCGLYNN, GUARD-Charlie was outstanding in the center of the line both cn offense and defense. He seldom left a ball game, was a rugged customer. Teamed with Poundstone to give Poets two of state's best guards. ROBERT GENTRY, GUARD-During the '42 campaign Bob was used at both tackle and guard. His regular position for the first two years was guard but he was shifted to tackle to bolster this weak spot. BEN SLAUSON, GUARD-Weighing only l4O pounds Ben is the smallest man to earn his L at the guard spot in years. Ben's intense fighting spirit more than made up for his lightness. Little Ben has been elected co-captain for l943. FRANK HAYES, CENTER-Playing his first full season, Hayes attracted ccnsiderable attention with his defensive play. He will be co-captain next year. R. T. MOORE, CENTER-After lettering at guard in l94l, Moore was moved to center early this season. The rugged pivot man worked hard and improved steadily. JOHN STEPHENS, QUARTERBACK-ln spite of the fact that he was the smallest man in the starting backfield, Doc was only one of the four to escape iniury. Blocking was his first love. Joined Air Corps in January. WYLIE POUNDSTONE, QUARTERBACK-Fourth and lasf of Poundstone brothers to letter in football at Lanier. Only a first-year man this season, Wylie will probably be a starter in '43. JOHN SHAW, QUARTERBACK-Up from the rank of manager came Johnny to earn his varsity L on the gridiron. He alternated between quarter and full. Fine little blocker. BILL HIGDON, LEFT HALFBACK-One of Lanier's all-time greats, Bill was accorded not only All-State honors but was named to the All-Southern squad. The l85-pound triple-threat was offensive spark. Entered University of Kentucky after finishing Lanier in January. HUBERT SELLERS, LEFT HALFBACK-When Higdon was iniured in practice before the Tuscaloosa game Hubert stepped into starting role. Fine kicker and broken field runner. JACK RUTLAND, RIGHT HALFBACK-A hard-running, pass-catching back, Jack was placed on the All-State sec- ond team. The Higdon to Rutland pass combination was one of the best in Lanier grid history. .lack is now in the Marines. SAM SCOTT, RIGHT HALFBACK-Sam made possible the long runs of his teammates with his fine blocking. He was an extremely able pass receiver besides being a powerful runner. DICK HALL, FULLBACK-Dick moved from the tailback spot in '4l to the plunging post to add power to the starting backfield. He was iniured in the first game of the season but came back to finish in glory. He ran 65 yards to score against Murphy. Page 4 GAME Ukem feacfem The Cheer Leader Group at Lanier have been largely responsible for the pep and enthusiasm ot the entire student body during football season. lt is to this group dressed in their attractive white suits, and sporting their schocl letters, that the student body looked for guidance in their rallies and at the games. The acrobats with their lithe and trained movements were enjoyed by all who attended the games. These crack high school squads were a real success. The first period class won the basketball honors, The players in this period were: Viola Till, Captain, Marion Lucus, Doris Rowe, Victoria Beton, Frances Mar- tin, and Marjorie Whitley. ARCHERY Yes, we played Cupid's game again this year. This art can only be conquered by practice and we have had plenty of practice fat that, though, we aren't as good as Cupid-or particularly goodl. Seriously speaking though, archery quickens the sense ot aim and advances the use of arms by acquainting us with the bow and arrow. SOFTBALL Each class was divided into teams and each played the other softball, alternately. This sport is good exercise and keeps up the spirit of the class during the spring days. The girls' interest increases every year in this game. TENNIS Well, it is iust about time to don the shorts and bat the ole ball around o bit. Every one is prac- ticing fcr the tennis tournament. It appears that there will be plerty ct stitt competition, BOWLING Our rainy day game has become quite a favorite. We never knew before that our girls had so much talent along this line. All the classes have been drilled individually in giving and executing commands. Also after school hours some of the girls have met and learned the latest military drills and exercises.
