Many hours are spent deciding just which way a picture should be cropped for proper placement on the yearbook page Choosing different type styles and picture special effects are just a pari of everyday life for a yearbook staff. Here, Gary Bowen. Tina Seale, Roy Hunter and Allen Doss look through a design book for yearbooks, irying to decide which special effect would be good for this years Sports section. Countless time is spent drawing designs and layouts on quadpacks so that the publishing company will know just where to put the information that the staff wants to include on the page. Drawing up some of this years work is lana Summers, Ann Adolfsson, Arnetta Norfleet and Lakeysha Perkins. Sports play a big part of the make-up of a yearbook. Gary, Allen and Roy make decisions as to what articles should be written up for that pirticular section. 145 Senior National Honor Society tim 1 Ronald scanner, Darrell B« l«- DavidCampbell Row2 Amelia White Pam Williams i eigh 1 admer Amv-lw Heidi Roberson. Recently I learned that I am a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship and the Achievement Scholarship Competitions. Let me explain what this means. In the spring of their junior year, about a million high school students across the country take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT). This test is used by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation as a qualifying test in the scholarship competition that they sponsor each year. There are two seperate competitions. The merit scholarship is open to all students and the Achievement Scholarship which is only open to black students. The Corporation examines all the test scores and names the 1,500 highest scores in each state Semifinalists. The semifinalists must then submit an application which contains a personal essay, grades from all four years in high school, a list of honors and activities, a recommendation from guidance counselor or teacher, and a recommendation from the principal. The applications are reviewed by a committee which judges test scores, personal essay, grades and recommendations. Finalists are announced in letters to the principal of the school. Although being named a finalist is a great honor, the real reward comes when you receive the scholarship. 174 1985-86 Senior Class Office rs fUquel Rancher — President Altherias Warmley Vice President Cheryl BeveHe Secretary Darlene Moore — 7reasurer Pam Hood — Chaplain Amy Lee Heidi Roberson Tammy Hill 1986 Top Five Seniors Darryl Boley Ronald Swanner 176 Marvin Wynn McDonald's All-American Basktball Team Anne Adolfsson Exchange Student From Sweden 177 Lanier Singers Off to Walt Disney World to Perform as Featured Performers The Lanier Singers were chosen in January to be featured performers in the Magic Kingdom of Walt Disney World. They performed on the Fantasy Faire stage on Wednedsay, April 16, 1986. The group submitted a professional tape and color pictures for adjucation in October. The Disney standards are so high that only 1 out of every 45 groups applying for performance rights are selected. Jess Lanier High School should be proud of these students for bringing this National Recognition to Bessemer and the school. The group also competed in the National Showchoir Festival, which was held on Saturday of the week that they were in Orlando, and won 1st place. 17B January 28, 1986 Ellison S.
