This was quite a struggle for the freshmen, new students, and rookie teachers. Finally, after a few days, the schedule changes were finished and school went back to its normal state of minor confusion from the last few days of utter disorganization. The cheerleaders have really pumped up the excitement with cheers, stunts and skits that led the student body to laugh, but at the same time support the team. They have been aided immensely by the Tiger and Tigerette, Mike Sel- man and lan Lazenby. The Pep Club has also helped them reach those new heights and give the team more spirit. The majorettes have done rou- tines every week to the swinging tunes blared out by the band under the direction of Drum Major Michael Sanders. The drum section has helped the crowd keep the beat with rhythms for the cheers and cadences while the people join in. The football players, in a group near the side, have absorbed the spirit and thrown it out on the field during the games. The students have enjoyed many funny occasions. Some of them were when the cheerleaders portrayed members of every typ- ical football team, when several of the teachers became Berry pies, when the cheerleaders and pep club did modern dance routines and when the cheerleaders became munchkins and did a lit- tle dance step to a Fifth of Beethoven. Exactly half-way through the season there was a week when spirit was running high, but the pep rally was comparatively quiet. I ful From Beginning fo End To start the day off right, the band worked on their show with the home- coming court. All day the halls appeared to be purple and white, as many got in the spirit by dressing appropriately. More pepping up the team was done than studying. Finally the climax came when the pep rally arrived. Miss Nabors was presented a dozen roses and almost that many embraces from the Varsity Cheerleaders for being their sponsor. Then the winner of the Poster Contest, Ray Cunningham, was awarded five dollars for his artis- tic show of spirit. The cheering mob almost resembled a church congrega- tion as they became silent for the procession of the court. The possible queens, with all the grace they could muster, strolled in their pattern around the gym floor. After the promenade, the pep rally reached a cli- max in spirit! Tiger Rag brought the rally and school to a close before the spirit could decline. if .F-iss V fr., , 1 Q if K I bisisi Sophomores Captured Display Prize While Linda Sims began her reign as the 1976 Homecoming Queen The floats were assembled between three and five- thirty and the judging took place immediately after- ward. A good crowd came to see Lanier slaughter Druid. After a wonderfully one-sided first-half, Mr. Long cleared his throat and announced that the Sopho- mores won the display contest with their slogan Flying Tigers Attack! ! Dragons Surrender! The Juniors cap- tured second place with their title Tigers puff the Dragons. The Seniors were hard to beat with the pop- ular theme Tigers Gonna Have It Their Way! The Freshmen got a good start at Lanier with their float say- ing Tigers Send Dragons Into Orbit. The tension could be seen on the girls' faces as Carla Bowlin and Kassandra Daniels were announced as tied for first run- nerup. Then the magic second had arrived when one of the twenty girls would be THE QUEEN and the rest would just be the court. Flower petals went everywhere when Linda Sims became the 1976 Homecoming Queen for Jess Lanier High School. The night ended in victory and the whole school was in a good mood until . . . K. Contrary to popular belief football players don't get six months off between the end of one season and pre-season practice for the next. They spend several hours a day working out with weights and exercising to improve themselves individually and as a team. On Maximum Days they lift as much as they can stand. Many new records were set January 11, 12, and 13. Charles Savage broke 300 lbs. on the bench press. Leroy McKinley cleaned up the other records with 525 on the dead lift, 500 on the squat lift and over 1200 on the thrust machine . Other lifts not used on maximum day are neck, behind neck, overhead alternates, explosions and arm curls. The players are working hard to make next year's team better. -s fx S . . Mclrchers On December 10th the night air was amazingly warm and dry for the annual Christmas parade. The band marched, preceded by the Varsity Cheerleaders on foot. Among the other groups from Lanier participating were the Phi Mu Kappa, Pep Club, Freshman Cheerleaders who decorated and rode on cars. The Student Council worked hard to build a float depicting Uncle Sam's Christmas at the White House. This year reigning over the parade as Queen Merry Christmas was one of Lanier's own, Lisa Kidd! Also in the court as fourth runner-up was Mary Smitherman. Dancing along delighting the kids that lined the parade route were the first-year members of the Key Club dressed as elves. OUT OF THE PLJJCJES Fon THE SENIORS 0F '77 A CLASS HISTORY Four years ago, we entered the most exciting and memorable period of our lives, our high school years. We entered Jess Lanier High School in the fall of 1973. With high hopes and frightened hearts, we stumbled into our first adventure: find- ing our homerooms! Following the example of the upperclassmen, we were a very spirited class. We were overwhelmed with our first pep rally and ball game, and very quickly we rallied behind the Tigers! Our own Freshman Football and basketball teams had winning seasons, and we were very proud of our guys. At our first Homecoming, we were represented by a lawn decoration, It takes Two Hands to Handle a Tiger. Time passed swiftly, and soon we found ourselves at the beginning of our Sophomore year. We were one step ahead of the Freshmen, but still young enough to be harassed by the Juniors and Seniors. As Sophomores, we were very active in extra-curricular activities. In our Sophomore year, for example, Lanier had its first Tiger Talent show. Gradua- tion hit us harder as Sophomores, and we realized that we only had two short years until we would be at the top. Our Junior year was filled with activities and excitement! Homecom- ing was a big event, highlighted by Lanier's Homecoming Dance. We captured second place with the Junior Homecoming lawn decoration, Hole The Gophers. Another interesting, but unique, event of our Junior year was when we went on strike. In three years of high school, the Juniors had not won the spirit stick at any of the pep rallies. As a joke, we decided to show the Student Body how important we were. In the end, however, we showed our usual spirit for the Purple Tigers. The biggest event of our Junior year, was the ordering of our class rings. Soon Graduation and Class Day had arrived, and with their arrival came goodbyes to many of our cherished friends. In the midst of our sadness, came a strong happiness and excitement, because we had finally made it. We were SENIORS! ! The first event of our Senior year was during summer when our Senior portraits were made. That was when we first felt like Seniors. Pall finally arrived, and with it came the greatest graduating class Jess Lanier High School had ever seen. At the first pep rally, we saw the fulfillment of our dreams, we won the spirit stick! There were many events in our Senior year, but they were all viewed from a different angle. This year we were looking at them for the last time . How does it feel? Very jumbled . There is immense happiness, yet at the same time, deep sorrow. One thing is certain: we can never forget the memories, the friends . . . nor the examsilj that Jess Lanier High School has given us. QYAAMQ Historian A CLASS POEM Class poems aren't easy to write , Because the things you're writing about are over As years of looking forward, become one moment of remembering . . Lockers crammed full of books and papers, With the ones you need always on bottom. The carefree life where one laughed in the face of danger, But was never late for band practice. The lunchroom, where you furiously did forgotten homework. The classroom, where you wished you had eaten lunch instead. Chemistry, where two and two don't always equal four. Genetics, where one and one make three . Math, there is life after Trig! Freshmen, who got lost even after asking directions And class poets, who can't find proper words to say Good-bye. It's been exactly 20 years since we departed from Lanier and we thought it would be interesting to see what our fellow graduates are now doing. Many of our classmates were adventurous and still are. For instance DAVID ALLEY has just returned from hunting elephants in Africa. Though he didn't get an elephant, he did find missionaries ANGELA COLLUM and GWEN CULWELL trying to teach brotherly love to the cannibals. Also it has been reported that a tribe of gypsies led by LEWIS MATHEWS is moving through the South. Among his followers are ALONZO HOLLAND, KEN CUNNINGHAM, ELSIE WILLIAMS, VERA BOYKINS, DEBORAH BILL- UPS, and MELVIN BENNETT, all in search of the Fountain of Youth. How about this for adventurous? Sheik TIM GEESLING added three more girls to his harem today. LINDA DICKEY, TORY DURDEN, and TONI GIARDINA are the lucky girls. They make an even 500. Speaking of sheiks, MATT SELF is still touring Europe with his harem . It wasn't hard to find President JAN LAZENBY. She's in Washington with her Cabinet. GLORIA WASHINGTON is Secretary of Affairs, LELDON LOCKART is Secretary of Defense, and MICHAEL SANDERS is Secretary of the Treasury. SHARON SMITH and RANDY WATSON are also in Washingtong she is a senator and he is her secretary . You can pick up any fashion magazine and see top models JULIA HAGERTY, MARTHA HAYNES, DAVID LAWLEY, and SHEL- TON IVEY modeling today's look: potato sacks! ! Remember how athletic some of our classmates were? Well, many have chosen the field of sports. BECKY KING is the World's Woman Wrestling Champion. Soon she will go against opponent CHERYL VICTORY. The Women's Olympic Basketball Team has recruited four of our former classmates. They are CHARLOTTE SEALS, WREN BRASHER, and KATHELEEN PERKINS, with TERRY WINNINGHAM playing center. And in an auditorium we found LISA KIDD receiving the Golden Glove Slugger of the Year Award! But the Class of '77 is not without a Super Star. TERESA TURNER is our female Bobby Riggs. Always with her to cheer her on to victory are her cheerleaders BOBBY WILLIAMS CCaptainj, WILLIAM WILKES and SAMUEL SIMS. In our search for our fellow classmates we found ourselves in a Hollywood studio where DARLENE MCGADNEY and JACQUE- LINE McSHAN, known for their violent tempers, were starring in a movie called The Grapes of Wrath. In another part of the studio we found MICHAEL GODWIN and SHARON GRAY, PATRICIA GRISWOLD and ANNIE DUNSON as the Pippettes. And in a local Hollywood Funeral Parlor JUDY NEVETT and ANNETTE BOWDEN were seen weeping over the bodies of their billionaire husbands, who died three days after the wedding ceremony. Rev. STEVE LOYD conducted both weddings and funer- als. Many of our fellow graduates decided to stay in and around Bessemer. The BESSEMER NEWS, for instance, is now being edited by JEFF WILSON and SHARON SHORT, and with the circus in town they have a lot to write about. The circus was formed by DEBRA COURTNEY and CARLA BOWLIN and is called the Ms. Circus. The daring young men on the flying trapeze are none other than MIKE MOBLEY, RUSTY MORRIS, ANTHONY PIPPEN and MICHAEL LACY SELMAN. They'd be great if they just weren't afraid of heights and looked better in tights. Other familiar faces belong to DONNY BEARD and MITCHELL BATES who are the lion tamer and lion, respectively. And what circus would be complete without clowns to keep the crowds roaring? Ms. Circus has two, RICKY HOLLOWAY and KEITH KUHN, but instead of roaring the crowds are snoring. Several new stores have appeared in Bessemer, Pop's Candy Shop owned and operated by RANDY ELLENBURG and D.G. D. owned by ANDREA DERAMUS ARONIA GRICE and VEDIA DUMAS. Bessemer has also added the BENNETTE YELLING Mental Hospital with MICHAEL LINWOOD SELMAN as it's latest addition. He cracked up after he found out that the Civil War is really over, but he won't be lonesome because MARY THOMAS, GINA BARBOUR and FRAN NARO have previously been committed. The head nurse is ZELDA WEDGEWORTH . MARSHA JACKSON, YVONNE LEWIS and CYNTHIA DENSON opened a charm school here and enrolled as their own first students. They flunked! In the courthouse we found Judge BETH BRITTON sentencing GAIL SHORT to 20 years for robbing MARK SAXON'S Bar and Grill. LINDA DUNN has set up a Driving Academy and her star pupil is Sister MONICA CUNNINGHAM. Speaking of driving, TAMMY BAKER is the 21st century Evel Knievil. Her new stunt is to try to fly over Division Ave. 230 We found many of our classmates on the streets. WILEY DOUGHTY and LARRY FLOYD are holding a raffle with chances to win an all-expense paid trip aboard the beautiful Titanic II. PATRICIA EDWARDS and BETTY GREEN are finger painting stripes on the streets and THOMAS CUNNINGHAM, TYRONE HOLMAN, TONI PRINCE, IERALYN ROGERS, GAIL SCOTT, DEBORAH SCOTT, LINDA HENRY, MILLICENT BAYLOR, CLAUDETTE MOORE, and MICHAEL CARLEE are just sitting on the curb. Each of them fought in the battle of wits and lost. At the Bluebird-2.-go-go-Lounge, where CATHY THOMAS is singing, DELSA LINDSEY, VICKIE DAVIS, HAZEL HUNTER, JEANIE GAINES, and DARLENE FRAZIER were frozen in grotesque positions after their joints got stuck while trying to do the dances they did as Rho Alpha Sorority sisters. There, with them, was their sweetheart, RODERICK HUCKABEE, still wearing his same grin with the minor exception that he's now completely toothless. Some more adventurous Bessemer residents recently formed a balloon caravan to circle the world in 81 days. Included in the caravan were BARBARA LYNCH, RONALD LATIMORE, SANDRA CARTER. JANICE ARNOLD and SUZY KILPATRICK. They left Bessemer 43 days ago and were last spotted over downtown Birmingham . Though we didn't get to meet with all of our old classmates we did, however, find out what they were doing. Here are the bits and pieces: CHRIS THOMAS went to his orthodontist, DR. GREGORY WATKINS, to have his braces removed after all these years, only to find out they had been permanently attached. RONEE THOMPSON has, to date , entered a total of 6,431 beauty contests and is still looking for more. ROBERT JEMISON is now captain of a new basketball team called the Bessemer Wild-Ones. SANDRA FULLER hasn't grown an inch and has landed a job with Keebler Co. baking cookies in trees. PHILLIP PROSSER, along with the help of his assistant DORIS PEDDE, won a Nobel Prize for inventing penny candy that sells for a penny. Q DOREEN PERKINS and CAROLYN DIAL, ex-bank tellers at JLHS are now ex-employees at lst National Bank. They were fireh for trying to embezzle. SHERRY DICKEY , MARY FOLKER, and SANDRA FORD were all jailed for cheating the IRS. Sherry copied so intently that she signed her paper with the name of the person from whom she was copying. And VALERIE HICKS, ROSALIND LANIER, and SANDRA WILLIAMSON are filling out forms to enter the Olive Oyl Look- Alike Contest. The old police sirens have been replaced, we noticed, by JACK WHISENHUNT who sits on top of Security Guard TERRI WES- SON's car while she patrols TIMMY TINDLE's Fashion Boutique. Of course this job wou1dn't be complete without first visiting our old high school, Jess Lanier, where surprisingly enough we found the ICSI of our schoolmates. MARIE ARFLIN took Chucky Jr. down to enroll him and was seen talking to LORETTA RIGDON who has finally landed Mrs. Belew's job after 20 years of waiting. Loretta said she was looking for PAUL WRIGHT's transcripts so he will be able to graduate in the year 2000. We found out SALLIE VINES is the new band director with BOBBY USHER, TAMMY STONE, and CEDRIC STEVENS, as assistants. RANDY BUNN is principal: WAYNMON SIMPSON is Athletic Direc- tory JANET JOHNSON is the new librariang CHUCK NAGLE teaches Humanities Ilg BETH RANDALL teaches typing and DOUG BURNS is the lunchroom manager. JIMMY GEORGE and VANESSA FULLER are the school's janitors and have been for the past 20 years. And to wrap up our study of the Graduating Class of '77 we heard that TERRY DeFOOR and MIKE DENNIS were last seen two years ago entering a girls dormitory and have not come out yet.
