With head in the clouds, hut feet planted firmly on the ground. For what you’ve given us, ]ess Lanier High School, we thank you. ROBERT BOTTSFORD We, the yearbook staff of Jess Lanier High School pay homage to a man whom we feel fully deserves this dedication. This man is Mr. Robert Bottsford. Having a B.S. from Auburn University, he is now working on a Master's in Guidance at Montevallo. Teaching six years (five at BHS), Mr. Bottsford has sponsored the yearbook staff every year, a tremendous responsibility which he carries well. The Key Club owes a great debt to him, their diligent sponsor. In addition to his many extracurricular activities (he has been a cheerleader at several pep rallies) Mr. Bottsford has been known to teach speech at Jess Lanier from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Versatile and a friend to all, we dedicate the 1971 Largus to Mr. Robert Bottsford. After, they were chosen, these girls worked diligently and represented our school well, at ail games, football and basketball. Senior cheerleaders 8re Faye Canzoneri and Debbie Rogers. Juniors arp Shelia Armstead, Donna Chancey, Celia Davis. Marion Hagerty. Pam Lemox, and Sherry Wright. Sophomores are Linka Hobson, Vickie Rogers, and Jean Ann Zauchin. Jean Ann Zauchin 46 4« The Jess Lanier High Band is indeed a group worthy of high praise. The half time performances presented this fall were brilliant with music and field representation. As a result of the many hours of exhausting practice and the well-executed presentations, the Lanier bond was asked to participate in the Veterans Day Parade, the Tarrant City Marching Festival, the Christmas Parade, the Governor's Inauguration Parade, and ultimately the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, Georgia. An entertaining part of the band is the group of girls who form the Color guard and Flag Corps. At district competition, this group received a superior rating. The Majorettes are an integral part of the Lanier band. The skill shown by these talented twirlers is surpassed by very few. Another important and perhaps essential part of the band is the drum major, John Russell. He also received a superior rating at district competition and won a trophy. Probably the greatest factor in the success of the Lanier band is the effort of the band director. Bill Jefferies and his assistant, Randall Harwell. Through the combined efforts of these two men and the students the Jess Lanier Band has achieved much success this school year - 1970-71. TIGER’S BOAST NEW TEAM - 124 FRESHMEN SHOW MUCH NEW SPIRIT - AND DISPLAY JUST AS MUCH TALENT!! 128 The Lanier Purple Tigers lost their first game of the 1970 season to the powerful Ensley Yellow Jackets, 14-6. The Lanier defense headed by Terrell Patterson, could not hold the explosive Ensley offense and the Tigers offense, minus star running back Steve Blackerby, could not seem to make up the 7-6 half-time deficit. Lanier routed McAdory 28-0, recovering well from the Ensley defeat. The Lanier-McAdory game brought out the unused talents of Ronnie Nelson, who played a spectacular ballgame and gave the Tiger fans a look at things to come. Lanier played one of its finest games against Berry, one which no Tiger fan will ever forget. The Bucs were undefeated coming to Bessemer and had high hopes of going to the state play-offs, but the Tigers had different ideas which led them to a 21-15 victory over Berry. There were many happy Tiger fans with tears in their eyes as they watched the Tigers pull off one of the biggest upsets in the state. The Tigers faced a tough Oxford squad, but were well prepared and proved themselves to be the only team on the field as they mutilated the Oxford Yellow Jackets 20-0. The Tigers suffered a big let-down against Tuscaloosa City before hundreds of eager Tiger fans. Oespite the vicious attack of the Tiger defense and the dangerous offense led by OB Ricky Davis and Back Mike Moore, the Tigers could not break the 14-14 tie. The Tigers left disappointed, but not defeated and were soon to take vengeance on a luckless Huey town Gopher brigade. Lanier upset the Gophers homecoming with a 12-7 victory over a powerful Hueytown team. The Tiger defense excelled and there was no stopping their offense. The Tigers welcomed the return of Steve Blackerby. who can open up any ballgame and did against the Hapless Hueytown Gophers. The Lanier Tigers excited everyone with a spectacular performance against Fairfield. It was the Tigers' homecoming and there was no stopping them. The Fairfield offense gave one last spurt of energy during the fourth quarter, but it did little to effect the outcome of a homecoming that everyone will remember for a long time to come. The final score was Lanier 34, Fairfield 21. All the Tigers played well against John Carroll at Bessemer. The Tigers' scoring was well distributed, as five different men scored to give Lanier a 35-0 victory over Carroll. Carroll' mistakes set up two Tiger scores; a fumble and the other an interception by Johnny Nunnally, who returned the poorly aimed pass for a touchdown. Ronnie DiChiara hit 100% of his conversion attempts and once more the Tigers were victorious. The Tigers' hopes were building and deep down inside they all wanted one thing, to beat Tuscaloosa County and perhaps get a shot at the play offs. But this was not to be, as the Tigers were to suffer one of their worst defeats of the season. The Purple Tigers, riddled by injuries, lost its second game of the season to a ready and tough Tuscaloosa County team. For the first time in an almost perfect season, the Tigers returned home scoreless and with more injuries than anyone dreamed possible. The Tigers played as well as anyone could against the monstrous Tuscaloosa County team and though defeated and discouraged they began to prepare for the final game of the season - Mountain Brook. Many believed the Tigers were to be defeated again, but the Tigers and the anxious students had not a doubt in their minds, the Tigers were to win their final game of the season, defeating Mountain Brook 29-25. The Tigers ended a beautiful season and left many Seniors a memory which will never be forgotten. This was the first season of the Lanier Purple Tigers, but many will remember them next year. They made a name for themselves and their school, one which will be feared and respected for years to come. Love and life are waiting for you With their warm arms all embracing. You must move forward to the call And stand back up when you would fall. So catch the boat and take the risk. Make the most of every gift. And through life's trials and life's romance. Just ask God's help to keep your stance. CLASS POEM For Time moves forward, never backward. And we must follow his example And march onward, onward, and never tarry. Keep in step - don't miss the ferry. Though Death states you in the face. Class Poet, Deborah Jones 208 CLASS HISTORY 1971 Twelve years ago. in September of 1959, 293 excited six-year olds began an intricate journey, which seemed to have no ending. Today, these 293 and others who also joined this cavalcade know that the first phase of the journey is nearly finished. Now we know this journey did have a destination - graduation. After several refueling stops for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, we were ready to attempt a more distant goal. This was our step to junior high school. We all do agree that these three years wero the most fun filled of all. High school brought us into a whole new world. We met new faces from many different schools. Now we all had something in common - we were known as Scared Sophomores. And that we werel We survived all harassment, however, and at last stepped up to the title of Confident Juniors. Many of us thought we had figured out all of the teachers' weaknesses by now and felt as though we carried the entire world upon our shoulders. But even with this confidence, it was still hard to realize that we would soon be Seniors. This would be an entirely new experience for us. as it has always been for Seniors. However. Fate had a surprise for us. Not only would we be Seniors, but we would be the Seniors of a shiny new high school. Jess Lanier High School CLASS HISTORY r brought us more new classmates with whom we could share the memories of Senior rings. Senior pictures. Class Day, and finally Graduation. Yes, we have experienced many happy and sad times together. These experiences have made us stronger. Many of us have gained new friends whose friendship will last down the years to come. We now begin to understand the truth of Shakespears' words, 'To love that well which we must leave ere long. Class Historian y AVOskusvLL.
