I am exceedingly happy that you have come thus far but regretful of having such fine, young men and women divorced from our school family. Nevertheless, this is an integral process of life which indicates a level of achievement. The road to success is seldom an easy one. But, he who has never known adversity, is but half acquainted with others or with himself. Constant success shows us but one side of the world. For, as it surrounds us with friends, who will tell us only our merits, so it silences those enemies from whom, a- lone, we can learn our defects. Success to each of you, John H. Byrd. H. S. Danville, Virginia. Tonight this train is crowded with the Senior Class of '55 and it has almost reached its destination. It came into view in 1950 when it brought one hundred forty-six young happy boys and girls over from the Annex to Langston High and arrived at Station 8. Here we were met on the platform by Mr. Armstead and his trainmen who were Mrs. Murphy, Mrs. Banner, Mr. McDowell, Miss Ivy, Miss Langhome, Mrs. Chaney and Mrs. White. They acquainted us with the vocational studies. After we had been introduced to all at this stop the train glided on to Station 9. Here we found Mr. Armstead had left us when we were met by Mr. Paige. This was the time for us to be assigned to four different Curricula Car Sections. 1. General, 2. Practical, 3. Commercial, and 4. Academic. Each person went where they thought they could eat, sleep, and carry on without being caughtg but, this is really where the journey began. When everyone had become comfortable the train moved on to Station 10, many passengers got off to make connections for points North, East and far West. What a glorious, gorgeous, beautifully appointed Club Car we beheld when we reached Station 11. This was getting closer to our destination. This Club Car was in existence at Station 9, but we were not really too active until we reached the 11th Station. While strolling through this car we discovered a Dramatic Section. There we saw Howard Barksdale, Philip Stamps, Carrie Lewis, Richard Crews and Mary Rosalind Wilson as members. Richard Crews was being starred as Ricky Ricardo in the three-act comedy I Love Lucy. Later our attentions were drawn toward wonderfully, soft music. The music turned out to be the Choir. ln it we saw Charles Tumer, Raleigh Stamps, Charles Wade, Gleneria Keene, Rosa Gunner, Richard Crews, Ella Tucker, Melvin Thornton, Aquilla Coles, William Poindexter, Carrie Lewis and Andrew Loundermon. This was tne year or 1954 and previously Carrie Lewis had won first prize on the Omega Psi Phi Fratemity Talent Hunt. Carrie was at a later date selected to be in a Musical Contest in Washington, D.C. While in the Club Car the train sped along to Station 12. Weren't we glad when we had come to this place. It seems as if everything was waiting for us. Mr. J. H. Byrd, Jr. met us at this station. We saw spaces that had been reserved for the N. H, A. , Student Council, Cheering Squad, Student Patrol and Langstonian staff. In the N. I-L A. section we found Mary Rosalind Wilson, Kate Moore, Lemma Wilson and Barbara Motley. Gene Motley was voted into the office of President for Student Council. ln the Cheering Squad section were Florence Bigelow and Ruby Leftridge. Endeavored to cheer on to the Football championship, Willie Conway, Ralph Hutchins, Linwood Davis, Rawdon Brown, James McLaughlin, Andrew Loundermon, Reginald Graves, Richard Crews, and William Poindexter, Mary Rosalind Wilson was elected our Homecoming Queen. For the Basketball Team we cheered Charles Wade, James Hunt, and Rawdon Brown. 4 w I 1 In another section of the same car a pageant was being dramatized for Education Week. This pageant was called The American Way. Frances Jones was a little Catholic girl who read the Rosary for us: Richard Crews was a Rabbi, Ralph Hutchins an Episcopalian Rector, while Joseph Edmonds served as a very convincing narrator. We finally gathered on the platform of the Observation Coach to Reminisce about our wonderful journey through Piedmont Section and the Valley of Virginia. We were fully agreed upon the fact that ours had been a joyous -educational, inspirational and eventful journey and now we are about to stop at Junction E. Our Diesel is refueling for redistributing us to places further South, to Industrial Centers of the North, to lucrative farms and Urban Sections of the hast, to the furtherest points of the earth as Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, Waves, Wacs, Homemakers, members of the Learned Professions, Smaresmen, and to-be Mr. John Q. Citizens. We now sign off as class of 1955 Station JML operating first Educational Broadcast Program Night Train. We will be followed by Class of 1956. Until then--we say Good Night! and Good Luck! GQJJ jyfoffo Honor lies in earnest toil, CASS State of Virginia City of Danville County of Pittsyvania We, the Senior Class of 1955, of John M. Kate Moore Frances Jones Bobbie Jean Price Ulm ,Rem To you, dear Langston High, we bid A very sad farewell. For all the hope, for all the trust That in our hearts now swell, For all the joy, for all the tears That we have shared here Our hearts go out with saddened thoughts Of this--our final year. We hope that as we go our way By paths you have made bright, Your welcoming doors may never close To those who seek for light. Because within your halls we walked And learned 1ife's honored rule The seniors here can never forget John Mercer Langston High School, R. Crump GAS-S TFOPKGCY Traveling in our time machine we pause for a moment to look out on the unraveling year 1965. There are so many things to attract our attention that we hardly know which to concentrate upon. Ohl There 's one, it seems to be, yes, it is--a Come As You Are Party. And who are the guests of honor? The 1955 graduating class of Langston High School of Danville, Virginia. Most of them rushed away from their jobs in order to be here tonight. Say! Don't I know the host and hostess? Sure, I do. It's Bobbie Jean Price and Howard Barksdale, her husband. I just knew they would finally marry. Well, Bobbie is a model and Howard is an engineer for one of the largest engineering companies of Chicagog a most handsome couple. This party is typical of them, you know. They need contacts to throw business their way. Who are those young ladies in uniform over by the punch bowl? Oh, Edna Glass and Loretta Anderson They are nurses for the 186th Regiment at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Look at that crazy gown! No, look at who is in it - Barbara Shirley. She is a famous designer of gowns, and designs them especially for my old girl friend, Eartha Kitt. Now, why would two guests bring pencils and shorthand pads to a party? Oh, they are Mary Rose Wilson and Frances Clarke, who are stenographers in Washington for the Secretary of State. They are really going places. Observe the sophisticated ladies sitting in the comer. The interior of our new Langston High was done by them, Barbara Motley and Glenaria Keene. They were the only persons suited for the job, and they are now talking over plans for the new Byrd-Wright Junior High. p Those poised young men constantly making lady friends there, are none other than the very able lawyers who recently won the tax evasion case for Reginald Graves, the, you might say, professional tradesman. They are Willie Conway and Gene Motley, who are still carrying their brief cases, looking for business. Let's see, I know those people--Dorothy Lea, Ella Tucker and Charles Wade. I'm glad to see them taking time out from their teaching activities at George Washington High School to enjoy themselves. Hear that mambo beat? And guess who is on the floor? Gloria Motley and Kate Moore. They both recently signed a contract to dance in Las Vegas in They Were Doing The Mambo. Marilyn Monroe is no longer America 's number one pin-up girl. She has been topped hy the young actress sitting over by the window in the bathing suit, our own Rosa Gunner. You should see her latest picture, A Hard Road. Remember Isaid some of the guests rushed away from their jobs to get here. That accounts for those tyvo pediatricians treating the baby boy over there in the comer. lola Logan and Frances Jones left their Clinic in Chicago so fast they forgot to give the baby back to his parents. But that's all right because his father is standing only a few feet away. Who is the father? Why, Melvin Thorton. He and Ralph Hutchins are contractors in their own business, you know. Consult them when you want your next house built. Do you see that deathly-looking fellow over there in the black suit? He looks rather pale doesn't he? No wonder, that is the funeral director, Phillip Stamps, of the Stamps Funeral Enterprises. He used his own Ambulance to get here on time. With the siren in full force. That vocal artist over by the piano is Carrie Lewis. She is to appear at the Metropolitan Opera very soon. You don't have to guess who that is carrying that tray loaded with food. That is the dietician at Langston High School, Richard Crews. He shou1dn't complain about the meals anymore since they are in his hands, or should Isay, since his hands are in the meals. Isuppose you've noticed that fellow near the band stand. It looks as if he is jotting down some notes, maybe for a news article. That's the fiery reporter and noted joumalistic writer from the New York Times, Joseph Edmonds. There was a fellow around a moment ago with the most beautiful teeth. He is a dentist, you kl10W. and he designed his own plate. Oh, there he is--Charles Turner. I hear he recently made a fortune on those pale pastel plates. Over in the phone booth you'll see Oatson Lewis. I heard him say a little while ago that he had to call the Memorial Hospital, where he is working as shipping clerk, to let his boss know that he forgot to check out. Waiting outside the phone booth is Lemma Wi1son,4who is secretary to the Vice President of the United States, unbelievable as it may seem. Hope she doesn't get in on any govemment secrets because you know how much Lemma can talk. Those two young ladies floating around the floor in those gorgeous gowns are Aquilla Coles and Emestine Wamer. Both of them are wearing their own originals. n When we were back at Langston in 1955 the girls styled their hair in pony tails and duck tails. The girl looking in the mirrow with the fish tail hair style is Florence Bigelow. She has a beauty shop now and has developed a prosperous business. Notice the two second looies of the WAF in the center of the floor. They are Bonzola Nicholson and Janice Barksdale. They are talking with the stewardess from the Trans-American Freight Line, Anita Chaney, whom they bumped into on the plane. Those guys with the boxing gloves look punch drunk. James McLaughlin and James Hunt both are professional boxers. Standing near to lend a helping hand in case they are needed are the ladies in white Those nurses sure look neat in their uniforms. I hear that all of them, Myra Jones, Ethel Oliver, Florine Walters, Dorothy General, Peggy Peters, Carolyn Mimms and Ruby Leftridge are the most efficient nurses at Winslow Hospital. Been wondering who the fellow is parked outside in the lavender Buick. He is Theodore Holland who runs a fabulous night club in Las Vegas. Speaking of automobiles, I know you are wondering how the new Cadillacs are retaining their power and good features. You will be surprised to know that they were designed by Charles Cole and Orlando Brown. They haven't come in yet but are waiting for Rawdon Brown to test one of his new jets. He is working in secret service you know. Who is that with the stethoscope? That's Dr. Raymond Crump the chief physician at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He just finished a conference with a psychiatrist from Duke University, Theodore Dixon. You would never believe it, but Willie Motley finally passed stenography and is now working in the govemment.-.4 Those fellows reading the sports page are Linwood Davis and Phillip White. They both made head- lines. Linwood's the quarterback for the Cleveland Browns and Phillip is the middleweight wrestling champion of the world. Our time machine is -cranking up to continue its journey. We hope that we saw everyone during our short visit into the future, If not you can blame it on the fact that time waits for no one. r 4 Zfyfafsws X -wb f 'mf .,,,,...3k3f, w M ' ,J---' --1 4 .. n,,-.ff .V-1' ------------------------FrancesWi1son President - - - - - Levi Pace President ------------ CC i V 1' ASS 1b U12 Jeffries Thomas cretary Se s. :w ?
