V v Like a small stone in a mosaic, each of us has held his own measure of importance in creating a completed picture of Langley High School. We have earned both praise and criticism under the challenging pressures of academic life. Striving for excellence, we have met success with pride and failure with grace. New faces have come into focus, and old friendships have been magnified. We have conformed and, at times rebelled, in the struggle for acceptance; and in the end, we have matured. Each individual has added to the character of the Saxon portrait. Shire is presented as a portrayal of the year ' s activities. Each of us has contribut ed to its entirety. Hopefully, each printed page will revive a memory and each picture a moment. Within these covers lie happiness and spirit— the dimensions of Shire ' 67. ♦ V LANGLEY HIGH SCHOOL 6420 Old Georgetown Pike McLean, Virginia Vol. II -, _ . —«■■■• 1 Table of Contents Classes Faculty Activities Organizations Sports Ads 14-65 66-87 w 88-109 2 110-135 136-167 168-175 With a speech, a tree, and a pair of scissors, Langley High School has been dedicated to the purpose of molding the lives of future citizens and leaders of America. ■■■■■i The beauty and serenity of the Capital and the community have provided opportunity for quiet thought and restful relaxation. ■1 v Students have congregated at popular community Recreation Areas in order to enjoy a leisurely social life outside of school. Determined to set a worthy precedent, we concentrated our efforts upon raising money by selling thousands of Tootsie Rolls and sponsoring activities, such as the faculty football game and sock hops. With the completion of this prom, we look forward to our own prom and the Senior privileges which we have earned. HERTZLER Principal Principal ' s Message When I think back over our first two years as Langley High, we have indeed had a good start. Individually, each of us whether teacher or student has contributed in some way. Then too, collectively we have contributed. Our beginning was accomplished through a team effort in which the participating individuals played a unique role. Successful as our efforts have been, the future of Langley will be de- termined by appropriate change. Change is here and we will all be constantly challenged by it both as individuals and as a part of some team effort be it school, family, employment or whatever. He who would succeed must be willing and able to meet change head on and to cope with it effectively. 68 WAYNE BART Assistant Principal for Administration CLINTON DeBUSK Assistant Principal for Instruction RUDOLPH BUSH Director of Guidance The Administration of Langley High School is headed by four experienced and dedicated men. The principal, Mr. Elam K. Hertzler, received his AB at Eastern AAennonite College and his AAA at Eastern Michigan University. He previously taught mathematics at McLean High School, was Assist- ant Principal for Administration at Madison High School and was Principal of Marshall High School. As Principal, he is responsible for supervising the entire operation of the school program, han- dling public relations, and long range planning. The Assistant Principal for Administration, Colonel Wayne Bart, received his BS at West Point and his MS at the University of Virginia. He previously taught physics at Madison High School, a private school in Michigan, and Marshall High School, before he became the Assistant Principal for Administration at Langley. The Assistant Principal for Administration holds the responsibilities of acting as Principal in the Principal ' s absence and is specifically responsible for day-to-day ad- minstration and operation of the total school program. The Assistant Principal for Instruction, Mr. Clinton DeBusk, received his BA at Bridgewater Col- lege and his MA at the University of Virginia. He was previously a teacher, a counselor and the As- sistant Principal for Instruction at Marshall High School. His special responsibilty lies in matters concerning the curriculum and instruction. The Director of Guidance, Mr. Rudolph Bush, received his BA at Bridgewater College and his MEd at the University of Virginia. He previously taught at Burke Elementary and Longfellow Inter- mediate Schools and was a counselor at Marshall High School. The Director of Guidance is respon- sible, with the help of his staff, for the organization and supervision of guidance services for stu- dents, teachers, and parents. 69 English Department Four years of English are a requirement for graduation from Langley High School. The English Department offers a comprehensive program in literature and composition. In addition to the traditional courses, the English Department, in conjunction with the Social Studies Department, offers three team teaching programs: World Civilization I, World Civilization II, and American Civilization in grades nine, ten, and eleven respectively. Fu rthermore, the Department offers courses in journalism, and public speaking. The faculty seeks to give the student a keen awareness of words and a facility for their use; to help him use language effectively in thinking, speaking, writing, listening, and reading; to help him enrich his whole cultural point of view, so that he may develop a greater insight into humanity and a heightened awareness of his own identity. A satire on doctors, the play described a hypochondriac and his miraculous recovery. The actors used the exaggerated acting style of the eighteenth century in a setting of the same time period. Hilariou s prop problems arose concern- ing a goatee, a wig, and a hat. Trying to keep Hugh Helm from falling apart ' ' on stage created backstage chaos. Al- though a snow storm prevented one of the three scheduled performances of the play, The Imaginary Invalid was a financial success as well as a production success. Composed of students who devote many hours after school to practice, the band was recognized for its accomplished style. In March the band was chosen one of the six best in the Midde Atlantic states and was asked to perform in a contest in Pittsburg. It was a most rewarding year. The first rule for each of Langley ' s five majorettes was smile, whether they were marching down the football field, participating in the Halloween parade in Vienna, or twirling for the basketball game against Marshall. Each routine, especially the routines for the Cherry Blossom Parade and the March twirling contest, required hours ofpractice. In addition to twirling, they assisted Mr. Horan by ushering for concerts and performing daily duties. L. to R-: Sally Johnson, Patti Ruddle, Dordy Wheat, Ellen Bishel, Pat Miller. Latin Club No, Latini, Every first and third Friday of the month wasn ' t Friday the thirteenth, even though many of your meetings had to be suddenly postponed. But when the club members did meet, they were active. This year, the Langley Latins joined the Junior Classical League. While enjoying refreshments, the club members learned about Roman culture by viewing filmstrips and listening to reports. The black arm bands worn on the Ides of March commemorated the death of Julius Caesar. In order to stimulate interest in the club, members sold Agnus stickers. Tentative plans were made to sell monthly calendars and class pins. As was characteristic of the Romans, the Latini enjoyed feasts and held a boisterous banquet. As Agnus fares, so fare the Latini. Long live Agnus! Vice-president, Sally Johnson, awaits the start of Latin Club meeting 120 German Club Langley ' s German Club members enjoyed furthering their knowledge of German culture and customs. They listened to a German speaker and viewed slides of Germany. Participants of the progressive dinner and trip to the German restaurant sampled German cooking. During the Christmas party, members of the club enacted the play Der Gute Tannebaum, or The Good Christmas Tree. Afterward they went caroling and sang to a surprized and curler- bedecked classmate. In February, the club members held a costume party to celebrate the traditional German Faschingball, the celebration before Lent. Future Teachers Club Mrs. Morton, FTC sponsor, leads a class discussion. Buy a tootsie roll pop! The crowd of students located at strategic exits from the school building struggle to buy a tootsie roll pop from a future teacher of America. These teachers joined the Future Teachers of America Club and began learning about the teaching profession. The club members explored various divisions of teaching, where and how teachers receive their training, and how to obtain scholarships. Guest speakers dis- cussed several of these topics. A spring tea was held for all Fairfax County members of the Future Teachers of America. The money earned by selling tootsie roll pops was saved in order to buy a gift for the school. 122 ROW 1, L. to R.: Fairfax Puhan, president; Grace Kempton, vice president; Noreen Quinter, secretary; Pam Nagle, treasurer; Nancy Atkinson. After hearing a speaker discuss Christmas decorations and gifts, the club members, sponsored the homeroom door decoration contest for Christmas. Interested students consulted with a beautician about wigs and hairpieces, and with an informed speaker about full-time and part-time jobs. This year the staff received so much good student material, that they printed a supplementary issue which was included in the January Scop. The 1965- 66 issues received a high rating from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. This year ' s edition won a first place award, ranking it among the highest in the country in its category. In its second year of operations, Langley ' s newspaper, Scop, contained several innovations. The publication, which is issued ten times per year, was printed on regular newsprint for the first time. A second innovation was the publication of two special literary issues in conjunction with the staff of Shropshire. In honor of Langley ' s first graduating class, the staff distributed a senior edition of Scop at the end of the school year. A special feature of this year ' s paper was its Teen Series, an attempt to put into perspective the attitudes of the new generation. Under the sponsor- ship of Mr. Wayne S. Chester and the co-editorship of Nelson Johnson and Sarah Buie, Scop adequately and interestingly reported the news of Langley High School, 1966-1967. At the Columbia Scholastic Press Associa- tion Convention, Scop was awarded medalist honors, the highest award given by the association. From the time the theme was decided upon in mid-summer, 1966, to the last days before the final deadline in April, the staff of SHIRE prepared the 1967 edition of the yearbook. Sur- rounding the table harried yearbook workers strug- gled to crop pictures, write copy, draw and redraw layout, and contrive methods for convincing potential advertisers that Langley ' s publications were the best. There were moments of boredom, conflict, panic, jubilation, meditation, accomplishment. With many re- turning lettermen, coached by Mr. Anderlik, a former professional ballplayer, the chances for another record-breaking season are good. Coach Tindall ' s daily training for fifty-five potential track stars included pacing a five-mile practice run, taking a quick shower, and massaging shin-splints. Participants in field events such as shot put, high jump and broad jump, also practiced after school. The Saxon racket wielders are perfecting hard hits, smashing serves, and driving backhand returns in fast-moving games of tennis after school. Some net-men began the season with handicaps such as a sore, leg or a foot wounded by a falling desk, but one main problem plagued all the players— a lack of tennis balls. Who says blondes have more fun? says Margo Stickler. 164 Laura Watts and Margo Stickler share an anxious moment at a Saxon basketball game The Saxon aids the cheerleaders. Composed of thirteen vibrant girls, the 1966-67 cheerleading squad has done a considerable amount of work to boost the school spirit at Langley. Selling beat signs to students before the football and basketball games is just part of their tradition. Another activity is to make cardboard footballs and put them on the Varsity players lockers in an effort to raise their morale before games. Associated with their variety of died green tennis shoes, these bubbling girls work hard to induce school spirit among the students of LHS. Guided by Miss Harrelson, the Varsity captain is Donna Froelich with Laura Watts as co-captain. No, I ' m sorry our group didn ' t have 34% fewer cavities, We ' re the clearasil people. By practicing good sportsmanship themselves, they encouraged the entire student body to boost their team in a manner benefitting a true Saxon. Boasting an undefeated season, the freshman cheer- leaders were the women behind the great men.
