ALMA MATTER Amid the towering buildings A school of knowledge stands, Its name our purpose to uphold, We'll spread through all this land, Her colors may be battlefstained, We'll fight with all our might. All Hail! to Langley High School, And hail Maroon and White. Ages are swiftly passing, New voices ever ring, With loyal, true and honest hearts To thee they'll ever sing. Four years of work they have with you. Midst scenes we loved so well. We prophesy a future In words we seek to spell. And when the shadows lengthen, And night is drawing nigh, Then in my memory wanders A thought of you, dear high, Your colors high before us wave, Our symbol for success. Under the proficient supervision of Coach Fred Bode, the team has developed into one of the hardest hitting fast fielding aggregations among Western Pennsylvania high schools Starting the campaign in midfseason form, the maroon nine has ridden roughfshod over all opponents and is making its bid for the city crown. Ragazzo, maroon hurling ace, seems in the best of form, while Trimmer, utility pitcher, has made a good showing. Qualik covers the initial sack, while Close at second and Johnson at third, recover stray balls in that vicinity. Noah at the hot corner and Burke at the anchor position, complete the inner diamond. The outfield is composed of McCullo1n, left center, and Brown, right. The senior class is fortunate in having base' ball letter men. Qualik, Brown, McCullom are important cogs in the Bode machine. If the maroon nine should capture city laurels this year, the silver loving cup, emblef matic of City Championship will remain at Langley as a permanent possession. The maroon baseball nine applied a generous coat of whitewash to the Oliver crew when they defeated the Dennis combination, 470. Ragazzo was in the box for Langley while O'Neil attempted to stem the maroon hits for Allegheny. Both moundsfmen acquitted themselves favorably. V O'Neils early streak of wildness, when he walked McCollom, Johnson and Kasper, and then forced in the winning run when he hit Noah, was a break in Langley's favor. Ragazzo pitched line ball, holding the opponents to a trio of hits. Kasper, Close, and johnson also received a share in the calcium. Carrick, regarded as the weak sister of Section 2, crumbled before the Langley at' tack on May 6, and fell victims to the Corliss nine, 942, at McGonigle field. The Langley sluggers, after clouting Auel, the starting pitcher from the mound, went to work on a lad named Dale. His was also a hectic struggle for the Bodefcoached machine totaled four more markers in the fifth inning. . Two double plays by the Langley outfit featured in the game and proved the strength of the infield. Close, Johnson, McCollom and Midgely were the Langley headlights. Coach Bode's crew hung up another baseball scalp when it trounced the hilltop out' fit on McGonigle field, Thursday, April 12, 6-5. In order to save Patsy Ragazzo for the allfimportant tilt with Allegheny, Coach Bode started Owen Trimmer in the box. Although this was Trimmer's first chance against a league opponent, he acquitted himself with credit, allowing only two markers. With excellent fielding and savageflike svvats, the maroon team outplayed the Blue and White team, and thus removed a possible jynx. Quaker Burke, Brown, and Noah starred for Langley. ' The Langley diamond team hurdled the last big obstacle on the road to the pennant when the Allegheny flelders were toppled by maroon batsmen on the Phipps Play' ground field, Monday, May 2, by a 7-5 score. Ragazzo and Beitel, both promising slab artists, hooked up in a hurling duel. By virtue of fine support and Eve horse shoes and a rabbit's foot, Patsy won the argument. ' Allegheny fighting to the last ditch, forced the maroon nine to play another frame, In this stanza Kasper, johnson and Noah served up the game by scoring a tally apiece. Langley High School Band HE Langley High School Band, which is three years old, has 42 members. The uniforms consist of white trousers and shirts, maroon capes with white linings, and maroon and white band caps. Mr. Rankin, Science instructor, is the director. The band captured second place in the state in a contest held at Conneaut Lake Park, on Wednesday, May 18, for the high school bands of Pennsylvania. Erie Academy High School received first place with 85 points, although Langley was a close second with 83 points. Besides playing in the contest and at the football and baseball games. the band gave an evening concert in Langley to raise money for the trip to Conneaut. It led a soldiers' parade in Elliot and Sheraden on April 15, and the Memorial Day parades in the West End on Sunday and Monday, May 29 and 30 of last year. A concert was given in Carrick High School the early part of the year, and at the Shaeffer school later. The band also played under the auspices of the G. A. R. at the commemoration of the soldiers who died at Fort Pitt. NP QR: Page Fo1tyfSix . iggqp wif -...A : '-. ' R.-C--., 'Ql-iiiQ - .1 J 'i, :'g g '. , f 'i'!! Oliver pool against all the city high schools. Despite strong competition on the part of the other schools, the Maroon natators swam their way to the city crown. Schenley, former champs, had held the title for ten years without a defeat. The meets which preceded the championship were: September 28, Oliver and Langley at Langley. The result was Oliver 12, Langley 29. The second meet was a forfeit. It was scheduled for October 5 between Langley and Allegheny. October 19, Perry versus Langley at Perry. The score was Perry 24, Langley 26. The last meet was held at South Hills. The score was Langley 5'-5, South Hills 15. The members of the team are Aleeth Roberts, captain, Alice Eller, Majorie Eller, Lucille Hytowitz, Gertrude Lewis, Pearl Reno, Nancy Phillips, Willa Beck, Anna Beck, Miriam Peters, manager. -++3 j3v+- Girls, Tennis UNE MCMILLEN, former city tennis champion, is hard at work in order to make a last bid for the city laurels she surrendered to South Hills high school last year. The city high schools are divided into sections for playing tennis the same as for other sports. Langley was in the section with South Hills last year and was represented by Miss June McMillen and Miss Sue Fabor. In the first match of 1926, June defeated Miss Snodgrass of South Hills while Miss Fabor lost. The match with Allegheny was also an easy victory for June. The next match was again with South Hills, the winner of which was to play Pea' body for the championship. South Hills representative defeated June by the score of 6-o and 642. South Hills defeated Peabody, and this made Peabody and Langley tie for the runnerfup. Peabody forfeited the match to decide the runnerfup, thus making Langley runnerfup for the championship. Miss McMillen, who is to be graduated in June, 1927, is still eligible for this next tournament, and Miss Fabor, a juniorfA student is eligible for the next two years. With two such good tennis players waiting to do their best for the glory and honor of Langley, there is no doubt as to what the outcome of the tournament next September will be, and we, the graduating class of June, 1927, wish them all the success in the world. There were, in all, rr characters in the play with eight principals and three butlers. The leading characters presented contrasting types. Five represented English gentry and three portrayed the redfblooded American citizens. All were middlefaged except the he and she, young people, essential to all good plays of romance. The play dealt with the animosity existing between the English and the Americans. The bally Englishman who had nothing to do with Americans and the thickfheaded American business man presented' many humorous scenes. The chaperone and the bachelor uncle added to the plot. A The two families are finally reconciled when the American Romeo and the English Juliet become married. A double cast presented the play. Friday night's cast included Thomas McQuaide, leading man, Betty Darges, leading lady, Patrick Reilly, Edna Dingleberg, George Shroeder, Marie Milbourne, Mildred Parnham, Donald McFarland, Paul Pratt, Clarence Rogers, and Ross Lindsey. Saturday night's Cast was as follows: Donald Sutton, leading man, Elizabeth Dorn, leading lady, Fred Meyers, Gretchen Brooks, Charles Hertrick, Dorothy Evans, Marian Barbour, Maurice Evans, joseph Shea, Frank Vodvarka, and Ross Lindsay. 089000 ONEY, money, money, has been the cry raised by the seniors in their hectic efforts to fill the AERONAUT coffers with the necessary gold dust. All the students of Langley, as well as many outsiders have contributed to the AERONAUT fund with agility, and, on the most part, without a groan. i'But the task was not so easy as it looked, the business manager, George Schroeder, is ready to maintain. Early and late did George mop his perspiring brow in an endeavor to fill the money sacks. Even his dreams were filled with wild money extracting schemes, George reports. Under the business manager's direction the seniors sold Easter cards, presented a wellfattended movie, and had a greenwyet most successful-Saint Patrick's candy day. Another fruitful idea was the selling of candy at the athletic games and at the senior class play. But George was not the only one who had a hard task. Chester Adams, diminutive advertising manager, felt his usually sweet disposition slightly soured in the confusion. Chester had his hands full hustling and bustling about the city in quest of advertisements. Other monetary contributions were brought to the ABRONAUT coffers by class dues, the 'All Fools' Dance , the class play, and, finally, the sale of the books. S Leaders Club HE Senior Leaders Club of Langley was organized in IQ23 under the supervision of Miss Dickson. The purpose of the club is to stimulate atheltic interest among the senior girls. A girl, in order to become a member of this club must attain an HA or 'EBU in physical education work and satisfactory grades in the academic subjects. The executive committee selects and recommends to the club all girls eligible and the club as a whole decides upon membership. The club has had one party during the year and is making plans for numerous gala events next semester. The championship swimming team was the guest of the club at the last party. This year, the clubs all over the city were divided into sections. Langley was in the section with Oliver, Perry, Latimer, and Allegheny. On May 6, the clubs staged a social gathering at Oliver. Each semester a medal is awarded to one member for excellence in gymnastics and scholastic subjects. june McMillen was this year's winner. The oihcers are: JUNE MCMILLEN. . . ......,. The club, under the sponsorship of Mrs. J. D. Lewis, fosters a series of home room debates each semester in order to attain this purpose. Each home room puts a team in the field, and, by a series of eliminations, the school champions are declared. A silver loving cup emblematic of school supremacy is awarded to the winning room by the club. Although the Forum did not place a team in the field of interfscholastic debate this year, as it has done in the past, it is a foregone conclusion that Langley will be a conf tender for the Ohio Wesleyan Cup next semester. Slketclh Club HE Sketch club is one of the interesting clubs of the school. The members of this organization meet in room thirtyffour. If a person steps within the room, he will find himself in a fascinating little world of art with beautiful models gaily dressed in colorful costumes. The costumes vary from the colonial type to the present style of dress. Such a magnificent studio of fortyfone members with Dan Scott as President, Phyllis Wright as Vice President, Betty johnson as Secretary, and Charles McCurdy as Reporter has become amazingly popular. The purpose of the Sketch club is to teach the members the technique of illustrating the human figure. Each of the amateur artists has many privileges and much helpful service. The personal instruction and assistance of the sponsor, Miss Bowes are of inestimable value. The sketching may be done in pencil, pastel, or Water color. In favorable weather, outdoor sketching is done. The visitor will find the members of the Sketch club supremely happy in their artistic achievement and in pleasure they receive from sketching the models. EDITH FOWLER. 'uf' GH? Page Sixtyffwu +C! But, strange to say, as we look back, our first day at high school seems but yesterf day, and our once seemingly endless tasks now seem like mere play. But it was not always so. During our high school course we met troubles and difficulties over which we burned the midfnight oil and over which we grew greatly discouraged just as you pupils who are now in the midst of your course are encountering today. There were temptations and discouragements in our journey just as there are in yours. But, after all, as we look back, we see with clearer vision and we understand how each difficulty was necessary, how strength was built because of the endeavor forced upon us, how loving patience grew through the accomplishing of some unpleasant task. And now, too, we are able to see how many of our choicest studies and extra activities came to us in disguise. We did not recognize their true character at Hrst. Often our Erst impulse upon seeing them was to turn away and seek something easier. Because their garb was unattractive, we were sure that we could never enjoy them and could never attain success in an uninteresting class. But by and by, after we had studied those subjects or participated in those activif tries, which we at 'drst thought were so unpleasant, we found beneath their uncouth exterior, traits and qualities that enriched and developed us beyond our highest expectation. We seniors think now of the golden opportunities we have let fly by and think longingly of what our high school education might have meant to us if we had not shirked from those tasks which appeared unpleasant. But you who are just beginning your journey, or you who are in the second or third lap of the race are masters of your own fate in regard to making your high school course a success or a failure. To successfully complete a high school course does not mean necessarily that one must become a great scholar but rather that he must be so trained that he may be better prepared to live with his fellowmen. Everyone cannot hope to be a great scholar and so everyone should endeavor to develop his individual talents so that each may take his place in the affairs of men. We seniors, then, have gleaned from the broad experiences of high school life countless lessons which you, if wise will use as a lighthouse to guide you to the attainment of a successful high school career. May each student make the most of his opportunities when they present them' selves, that he may be able to say when he becomes a senior: My high school years have meant the most possible to me.
