M Wilfred B3Yne' ' i Esquire, l.,,,.1-'- I tomery, 'fri z.':'-1 gill and John MOH 3 4 -Q K --aff SHIP'S HISTORY USS LANG CFF-10605 was named in honor of Seaman John Lang who, during the War of 1812, courageously led a boarding party from the USS WASP to the British ship FROLIC, causing her to surrender to the American ship. LANG is the second ship of the fleet to bear the name, and is the sixth of the KNOX Class Ocean Escorts. The first LANG CDD-3995 was commissioned in 1939. During the Se- cond World War, she was involved in nearly every major Pacific cam- paign, and participated in the relief of the island of Malta in the Mediter- ranean. LANG CDD-399J encountered the enemy many times, yet sus- tained only minor hull damage for all her action. She participated in res- cuing the crew of the sinking Destroyer O'BRIEN, and saved thirty-six merchant seamen and downed pilots from death in the sea .i For her efforts, eleven battle Stars were awarded, and after a brief but glorious career, she was decommissioned in October 1945. The LANG of today is 438 feet in length, displaces 4100 tons, and is driven by a single five-bladed propeller at speeds in excess of 28 knots. The ship is equipped with long-range RADAR and SONAR detection systems, rocket and tube-launched Homing Torpedoes, the HARPOON surface-to-surface missile system, Close-In Weapons System anti-air gun, and a rapid-firing 5-inch 54 caliber gun. Facilities are also installed to embark a LAMPS SH-2F helicopter, crew and support personnel. Ber- thing facilities are available for a maximum complement of 34 officers and 278 enlisted personnel. Since being commissioned on 28 March 1970, LANG has been an ac- tive unit of the Pacific Fleet. She provided Naval Gunfire support for friend- ly forces ashore during the Vietnam conflict and also provided anti-surface, anti-air and anti-submarine protection for carrier battle groups operating in support of American efforts. There followed regular deployments to the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean and Arabian Gulf areas until 15 January 1982, when LANG became the first ship of her class to be assigned to the Naval Reserve Force. In her latest role, LANG serves as the sophisticated training platform for her integrated crew of active duty and Selected Reserve personnel. The ship participates in single ship and multiple ship underway exercises in the Eastern Pacific and Federal Governmentis Law Enforcement Program for which it was awarded the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation in 1986. In 1987 LANG shifted homeports to San Francisco to support the Naval Reserve in Northern California. nf ,
