2 ememher FRANK MAGILNER N QUIETUDE he lived, ever gentle Mr. Magilnerp quietly and suddenly he died on March 6, 1957. Always had he radiated good willp in his soft-spoken words were couched his kindly forbearance, his cultured and refined sensibilities. Here was a man who could ease a heart and comfort a friend. Mr. Magilner taught more than history at Lane: he taught, by creed and by practice, brotherly love, in the spirit of which the history he taught became a universal background for the kinship of man. Rich beneath the surface of his calm mien ran veins of understanding, fellow teeling, charity, yet his subtle, merry sense of humor twinkled from his eyes. Almost without words he gave balm to the spirit, How fortunate were those who knew him! His family is indeed bereft. -Dearly he loved his three little grandchildren - surely his gogd way of life must be implanted in their hearts after so close a contact with their beloved grand-daddy . JOHN G. PALKA OR YEARS one steadying influence upon which Lane had leaned with confidence was Mr. John G. Palkap and when, on December 30, 1956, he left us, to return no more, both the faculty and the stu- dent body felt tragically bereft of a faithful friend. Stalwart of conscience, he sought, ever, the right: and he had the hardihood to pursue it unflinchingly, unselfishly. He was a truly good man, with a resistless vigor of personality which influenced for the better all those who knew him. He was fair, he was understanding, and so, in the several positions which he had held during his years at Lane - drawing teacher, executive, administrator - he became a comforting lodestar to guide us aright. V Mr. Palka was an intensely loyal mon - loyal to his work, to his friends, to his own ideals. For his family he reserved a very special pride and a warm devotion: his happiness was intrinsically bound with theirs. Their loss, and ours, are irreplaceable. MAX KROP 0 BRIEF the years he lived, this science teacher with the soul of an artist and the heart of a friend. Mr. Krop died on January 21, 1957: so gentle and assuming had he been that it was as if he stole quietly from our lives during the night with hardly a goodbye. To him life had seemed beautiful, and he wished to invest it with peace ond good will. Thus, in his sincere and pensive way, he lived his life in keeping with that precept of beauty which had been his creed. His debonair presence in the long reaches of Lane will always be a wistful memory to his pupils, who adored him, to the faculty, who felt his sensitive, eager nature. We reach out in sympathy to his devoted and loving relatives, and to his bride of but a few years, to tell them that we too partake of the bitter-sweet sorrow of their loss. June 1957 19
