Lane triumphs in first game of the football season by smashing Bishop Noll, 13 to O. Hardly in school for more than two weeks, when the students get an extra holiday as water main bursts. By the nineteen- th everything is running smoothly as students perform rituals of locker day, attend first social, and, if they happen to be seniors, get their pins and rings. 4As hold their traditional assembly and the month comes to a close with the Lane football team defeating Har- rison. The ability to work one with another and to cooperate effectively and willingly for the wel- fare of all is the mark of a good organization be it a notion, an army or a school. The ability to cooper- ate and work together is one of the finest features of Lane. ln their report after their visit to Lone last spring the inspectors from the Office of the Superin- tendent of Public Instruction remarked on the fine spirit of cooperation apparent among the teachers and students and t h e high morale that e x i ste d throughout the school. The signs of high morale and mutual regard of students and teachers as the work of the school was carried forward was evident every- where and the visiting educators were impressed by this fact. Students and teachers are to be congratu- lated on this splendid spirit. lt is the hope of all of us at Lane that our graduates will carry this spirit ofco- operation with them wherever they go. English classes have proven invaluable to the student when he leaves school and looks for work. Science, mathematics, history, and civics help him to under- stand the world about him and make him a leader of the less educated persons. A brighter side is the defeat- ing of Lane's traditional rival, Schurz, 7 to 6. After the first holiday iColum- busl the 4Bs hold their election. It is a terrific campaign, and Wudke is e- lected President. Lane received a host of representatives as the annual Col- lege Day is held. Indian Summer had most Laneites breathing a sigh as they look towards our next door neighbor, Riverview, closed for the winter. Like a flash the weather changes and Lane experiences its first snow. Our four years here were fil- led to overflowing with experiences we shall cherish dearly. As we grow more mature and refine our sense of values, we shall appreciate even more what we have gained at Lane Tech. Our association with the school administrators and the faculty will always bring back pleasant memories of years spent at the School of Champions . l am sure also that we all hope to keep many of the friends we have made in the classroom, club, or athletic organization. To the excellent teaching staff must go the credit for not only infusing knowledge in us, enriching our outlooks and polishing the rough edges on our manners, but for imbuing us, with high ideals, courage and ambition so that we might face the future with more tolerance, understanding, and good sense. As future citizens we shall face many problems, obstacles, and difficulties. However, we hope to meet any hardships that we may encounter as a challenge to our intelligence, with the tasks confronting us. As president of the class of January, 1953, I wish to ex- press my deepest gratitude to the graduating class for the splendid cooperation which was given me. lt was an honor and a privilege to represent a class that so typified the true Lane. ROTC teams prove themselves champions as the rifle team sets a new city competition re- cord and the crack drill takes the dis- trict championship. Lane is honored by having Dr. John Rettaliata speak at the Honor Society assembly. The par- ents get a chance to view their son's school as Lane holds its annual Open House. Before the coming of the first snow Lane's football championship dreams are cut short when Austin de- feats Lane 7-0. The month comes to a close as the ROTC holds its military ball. Semester after semester, these boys continually fight the dreaded deadline to bring to you and your classmates the interesting stories, poems, and articles that are to be found in the Tech Prep. First, to put out the Tech Prep magazine twice a year, and second, to furnish a yearbook at the end of every semester. The co-editors-in-chief of the Tech Prep are Edward Matras and Chester Prazuch. The outstanding talent and musicianship at band mem- bers, and the fine leadership and training at Capt. l-lutf, its director, have brought an- other championship to The School Ot Cham- pions. During the course ot o school year the band plays tor such events as the semi-annual con- certs, student concerts, city contest, com- mencement exercises, open house, and any other programs requiring service of concert band quality. The selections made tor this heavy schedule emerge from a catalogued library consisting of well over three hundred numebrs, plus many others of a miscellaneous nature not catalogued. This library represents the best music available for concert bands. Membership of the band is composed of Lane Students from Freshman to Seniors and is unrestricted. Some serve as cloak room attendants door and hallguards or bouncers but all have the specific duty of setting a good example of courtesy and service to those who attend these functions. They act as hosts introduce the young people to one another and in general see that everything is moving smoothly. Their efforts have been outstanding for they been chosen for the last two years to serve at the city-wide dance band auditions held once a year at Wells High School. Mr. Thue and Mr. Meierdierks are directors and Mr. Kuecker and Mr, Rodger are sponsors of this fine group of young men who are helping to make the Lane Tech social dances the most successful in the city. A- Q X . 1 - v- V '1 , 11 N ' 4 HE Lane Symphony Orchestra pictured here is one of the high lights of Lane's Musical organizations, Although the personnel changes from year to year as a result of graduation, the superior caliber of performance which is a tradition of Lane musical groups is always carried onward. Proof of this is shown by the fact that the orchestra has never lost a championship in musical competition since the first contest in l923. On the four walls of the orchestra room hang the lst place and superior rating awards for each of the years to present date. Over the years the orchestra has had var- ious instructors but credit for our present fine group goes to Mr. Schneider, the director, and Mr. Grill and Mr. Blum, instrumental teachers. Their excellent instruction and guid- ance plus the co-operation of all the players result in a well balanced and pleasant program of music. A-a December, January Highlights HE month of December started off at snow-covered Lane with a spec- ial 4A assembly where the seniors were measured for their caps and gowns.The Mask and Shears' play, For Pete's Sake, was unanimously acclaimed a hit by all who saw it. The Lettermen's dance was held on the night after the alumni basketball game and was a huge success. The month closed with the annual Christmas As- sembly, and the dreaded third quarter marks. Graduation became the big topic as January began. The seniors crammed their heads with knowledge for their final exams, the last ones they will ever take at Lane, and rushed to the office to get their transcripts sent to the colleges they wished to attend. Towards the end of the month the Prom was held at the Evanston Women's Country Club. ASKETBALL was the second high school sport to be altered in the last year. First it was football and now, the junior bas- ketball team was abolished and replaced by the frosh-soph unit. This change left many boys out of the basketball scene. They found themselves in a world ot giants The ponies would have many boys returning from last year's squad. They are now rendering their services for Coach Umbright's team. The trash-soph squad will be coached by Coach Shaeter, who led the junior team last season. This change may help the city teams as they go downstate, but whether or not it will help regular league games has yet to be seen. Many boys who are short will not have much ot a chance in competition with the taller fellows. Frosh-soph ball may not have the popularity that the junior teams en- joyed. Lane's rookie squard has a fairly strong team as they racked up a few games during the practice season. This young squad will do their best to bring glory to Lane. ETURNING to the stoplight this season are Co-Captains Ron Lakin and Larry Basik. These two high scoring guards are the nucleus of a championship team. The Junior team being split up into the senior squad and now under the title, Frosh-Soph gave the varsity team Larry Basik, Norman Enderle, and Ron Podgorski. This contribu- tion forms a spirited group of bucketmen. The aggressive Ron Lakin returning from last year's senior team is playing partner at the guard positions with Basik. At peak posi- tion we find Bob Swedberg and Pat Murphy trading places, both boys are veterans ot last season's squad, Another veteran and a new- comer control the forward spots, they are Tom Romuz, a hustling rebounder of last year and Freddy Lindquist, an alternate hook shooter. Backing the starting five are two promising players, Jerry Rutherford, who gained some experience the previous season and a rookie, Mike Durso. Along with this group are the fellows from the discontinued junior team.
