These differences in weight and height are es- pecially noticeable in assemblies or in the lunchroom where there are large numbers of students together. ln the lunchroom small boys often seated chatting amiably with fellow students who are eighteen inches taller and many pounds heavier. To us who are accustomed to seeing the boys day after day there is nothing sur- prising about large boys being friends with much smaller boys but to the lay public, which has been used to reading of past years when the big boys almost universally bossed their smaller companions, it appears strange One of the fine customs at Lane is the way in which the seniors juniors sophomores and freshmen work together While it is only natural because of their experience and maturity that the upper classmen should assume leadership among the students the opinions of all classes receive due atten tion On the Student Council which has a great deal to do with determin ing school policies and which collects for all charities adminiters the newspaper selects the speakers for assemblies and works closely with the school administration every class has proportionate representation Because one district was restricted in size until three years ago the pre sent freshman class is much larger than the present senior class and act ually has a much larger vote then has the senior class But all the repre sentatives seniors iuniors sophomores and freshmen work together for their school and class rivalry is never seen lt is good to see how all the boys are represented in the school and are accepted on an equal basis To the teachers it is comforting to know that as leaders are graduated others take their places And to all of us parents teachers and friends it isaprivilege to watch the boys work play and learn together as they grow physically mentally and emotion ally from freshmen to seniors in different years and different classes but always as Laneites 1 1 I . 1 1 1 , . De cember 1946 He attended LakeVuew for one year, then came to Lane and made a fune name for hlmself on the soccer team He has played flrst strung ball since he came to Lane, and has held down the fullback spot for coach Hall's '48 and '49 cnty champuonshnp teams In hus lunlor year he was captain of the Iron heads. Herbies activitites have included the Letterman's Club, Honor Society, German Club, Student Council and Hallguards. GEORGE ADOLPH HEUER Treasurer George was born on the l5th of October, l933 in Chicago. He was graduated from the Hawthorne Grammar School and earned the American Legion Award for outstanding char- acter. After remaining at Lakeview for one year, he entered Lane where he immediately tried out for football. He received his letter the following year. George also participated in the Letterman's club, Robot and German clubs, and the Honor Society, of which he is a four year member. Upon graduation George plans to continue his education, but is undecided as to what school he will attend WILLIAM ROBERT GOLDBACH Sgt at Arms Bill was born June I5 l933 in Chicago and was graa ated from Ravenswood Gram mar School He decided shortly after entering the city s top hugh school that to gain many benefits he should participate in as many activities as possible He played football and wos a member of the track team for three years having been elected captain of the team the second year Bill has been rewarded by membership in the Letterman s Club and by many close friendships made in I M sports and various clubs After graduation he intends to go into medicine E I 'L1l1 'F -Q I N. POST Alumni Committee George was born on January ll, l933 in Chicago. He first at- tended Waters Grammar School and later transferred to Cromley In Febuary of 1947 he was graduated, and started at Lane where he tried out for some of the teams but did not make them. During his four years at Lane he was a hallguard and played in some I.M. sports. He was in the Robot Club and is in the Smith-Hughes Auto Shop. ROBERT CONN Announcement Committee Bob was born on May 5, l932. He went to the Funston grammar school and was graduated in February of 1947. After entering Lane, Bob lost no time in getting on the swimming team, and in his senior year was elected Capt. He swam in seven city champion- ship meets, and was also the junior and senior champion in fancy diving. He at- tended the Hibbard Elementary School from which he was grad- uated in January, 1947. After spending his freshman year at Von Steuben and deciding upon a technical course, Lenny arrived at Lane in January of 1948, He began getting into the swing of things by joining the Stamp Club and later participating in the Air Conditioning Club. Besides clubs his services to the school include that of an office boy, hallguard, and at present is Sergeant-at-Arms in the Student Council. He intends to take engineering at college after graduation. Lone Tech Annual BOVE you see the pictures of what could well be called the law enforcing body of Lane. Hallguards are placed in and around the school. Their purpose is to maintain order about the building, to keep the campus clean, and to keep order in the assemblies. The hallguards are volunteers and offer their services during their study periods. The officers are picked from those guards that show signs of promise and are recommended by one of the officers. The hallguard organization at Lane is the largest of its kind in the city, lt has about 400 guards operating through the O-lO per- iods. This semester, because of the large amount of work required to run the hall- guards, there are two chiefs instead of the usual one, They work together with their hard working sponsor, Mr. Schmiegel, to keep the guards working efficiently. Regimental Staff HE staff of the Lane Tech Corps is com- posed of seven of the hardest working officers in the cadet corps. The regimental commander and head of his staff is Walter Uhlich. Wally has been a member of our R.O. for four years, com- ming up from the rank of cadet to colonel. During this time he has made many friends and has been honored by being given the N.C.O. Efficiency medal and the American Legion medal. He plans to go on to study chemical Engineering at Northwestern. Lots of luck to him, and we know that whatever he does, he'll make good, Executive officer of the regiment is Ted Heitman. Of course the secret of acomplishment is cooperation, and the strenuous undertaking of keeping track of six hundred and fifty cadets is accomplished by staff cooperation. Major Ralph Smejkal, the S-l must keep the records up to date and publish the bulletins and aids of the commanding officer, Cadet Maor Christenson. He is the combined S-2 and S-3 and has the enor nous task of publishing the training prograrns for the entire unit and keeping the bulletin board of werld military affairs up to date. Ghamfu Ring Labanl' CCORDING to the critics, Lane has been the underdog in 50 percent of its league games and most of its final games, and still the spirit and determination of the team has won above all. The public league champion- ship which was won by defeating Kelly, 4l-2l , is Lane's third such honor and its first since 1923. ln the first game of the season, Lane romp- ed over its traditional rival, Schurz, by l3-O. ln the games to follow, they ran away with Waller, 4l-O, beat Lake View, 34-O, took the fourth straight by defeating Taft, 35-O, was first scored on by Senn, 40-20, and then faced a determined Amundsen team and just man- aged to get the edge l3-7. ln the semi-final game with Fenger at Sol- dier's Field, Lane was about a lO point under- dog due to the fact, according to the critics, that Lane boys did not come from good homes. But they ate their words as the Lane eleven over powered Fenger, 27-l9. While this was going on, Kelly had defeat- ed Crane and thus was scheduled to face Lane 4 . V ,1 Coach Manosin on the same field the following Saturday. Al- though the Kelly team had acquired the name Cinderella Trojans , the game was suppos- ed to be close. Even before the team lined up the fans knew they were going to see a running team, Lane, against a passing team, Kelly, and the big Kelly line was supposed to stop us. lt came as a suprise to all when in just one minute and 45 seconds of the first quarter, Lane led Kelly l3-O. With such backs as Sopkins, Hogan, Sizelove Albanese, and Amend, and a line c'onsisting of Decker, Capt. Ponder, Jim and Jerry Schwartz, Thunander and Gilbert, and under the guidance of Wojtalewitz at quarter- back, the half-time score found Lane on top, 34-O. ln the second half, Kelly showed a little life and completed a large percentage of their passes to rack up 2l points. A 79 yard run by Sopkins, and the conversion by Ponder were all the scoring Lane could do in the second half, At the final gun, the score was Lane 4l, Kelly 21. The majority ot the members belong to the Smith-Hughes Print Shop and therefore are well instructed in the art of printing. The group takes a number of trips each semester to different commercial plants where printing is done. This year they attended the Sixth Educational Graphic Arts Exposition which was held in the International Amphi- theater. The Printers' Club also works on all school publications. If one has ever looked at the mast head of the Lane Daily, he would see that the Daily is printed and published as an extra-curricular activity by the students ot the Lane Techncal High School. This also holds true tor the Tech Prep and Annual. lt was tirst organized and sponsored by Mr. AC. Grant in l932. Since then it has grown in size and in popularity. This was due to the able guidance of Mr, William Beck, who is the sponsor.
