lContlnued from page 91 Shop at the Vaughan Hospntal Mr John Szaton a dlstlngulshed young sculptor and a protege of the late Lorado Taft worked out the thought and ndea Involved In the memorlal The lndnan the symbol of Lane represents the courageous honest and energetlc way of the Lane boy The posltlon of the statue ns that of shootnng the stars an appeal by man to the Ruler of the Unnverse Thus ns a most excellent thought lt ns plac ed rn the east end of our garden facing west ln the west end of the garden a bronze plaque will be erected contannnng the names of the Lane boys who lost their llves nn World War ll ln thus beautnful garden wnth nts three pools shrub bery and flowers we feel that the memory of our departed heroes will lnve as long as the brnck and l feel that It IS flttnng and proper to make a few statements about what the students of Lane dld dur :ng the war We have proclalmed ourselves a school of champions Here are a number of our most Important accomplishments The students gave as glfts now knndly note these are glfts S6 200 for three Army ambu lances S6 250 to furnish recreation rooms at the Vaughn hospltal S3 000 to the Junior Red Cross Sl l 400 for Machine and Auto Shop at the Vaughn Hospital We are proud of these gifts and add to all thus the purchase by the students and faculty of one mllllon fave hundred and enghty two thou sand and fave hundred and elghty two dollars an bonds ln addltnon to thus our shops made 3 000 mo del anrplanes for target purposes l00 stretchers 300 wrought :ron stands 565 convalescent tables 200 Plng Pong tables and 2000 Plng Pong paddles and 750 card tables Oh yes I forgot our stu dents and teachers made l00 000 Red Cross Bandages We are proud of our war record but we are more proud of the 7 000 Lane boys who fought against a tyrannical system of government so that the cltlzen of today and to morrow may lnve In the splrnt of democracy ln memory of our de parted heroes we the students of Lane humbly salute you In trnbute to you nn my humble way l wnsh Memorial ln reverent trlbute to those Laneltes who gave the full Measure of devotion for justice and the American way of llfe Thus Memorial IS solemnly ded :cated Thus IS the Sentiment from all of us to you' NOTABLES l Mr John Delaney Dlrector of Publlc Relations Dr Herold C Hunt General Super lntendent of Schools and Col Hans Mlnueth Professor of Mnlrtary Scaence and Tactics Chicago 2 Mrs Clifton Utley member of Board of Education and Mr Frank Boege EdlfOFIOl Director Caplan Lerner Papers 3 Mr Robert Bodach M Walter Melsner and Mr Edgar Schnadlg Lane Alumnl . , , .
