John Campbe . gl?-J, An address delivered by Cadet Lt. Col Umbright on occasion of dedica- tion, Oct, 30, 'I947 Fellow students, Gold Star Moth- ers and Guests. Shooting the Stars, is the name given our memorial Statue by its sculptor, Mr. John Szaton. Many ot you students and nat- urally our guests do not know the history ot our memorial. When the Senior Class ot i943 discussed the class gitt, they decided they would give the amount tor a suitable Memorial in honor ot our boys who gave their tull measure at devotion tor the American way ot lite. Each class thereafter until June I947, did the same thing. Today we are holding a memorial program and the dedication ot our statue in honor ot those boys who no longer are in the portals otLane. no longer are in the portals ot Lane. Words cannot express our sorrow and neither can we do pro- per homage to these Lane Indians, who, as true Americans, fought as they had been taught to tight in their tour years at Lane. The work they did was tor a better world, it that world will know enough to ac- cept the American way ot living. I should like to eulogize on this subject but my elders who will tol- low will do justice in that respect. I believe the students ot Lane and and our guests would like to know more about our Memorial. After the money had been given by dit- terent classes, a committee ot al- umni, students and administrators was selected to determine a titting memorial. They had decided on a statue symbolic ot Lane spirit and the Lane boy. We should give credit here tor the work ot our Principal, Mr. James I-I. Smith, our Assistant Principal, Mr. Mar- tin J. Thue and Mr. George Piper. Piper This semester the 4A Architects have planned a six flat apartment building. Each flat must have four rooms, one bedroom, a kitchen, living room and a dining room. The next plan was a presentation drawing. Mr. Piper would give us a certain location of the house, which is a former Army Barracks. This is more or less a competition drawing to see who would have the best ideal plan which also consists of a Front and Side Elevation, a section through the wall and windows and color work to make the house stand out. The winning drawings are chosen by Mr. Piper. Page Sixty Air Conditioning Club Row 1. Porter. Peterson Theiss, Mr. Gotschall, Sponsor Mistarz, Miller, Rosenbloom Wurtlin, Greenfield. Not at Lane anyway. Take Bob Chelovich of this year's graduating class, for instance. Bob has played end on our football team for three years now, and also was on the track team. But failures? Not exactly, Bob is Sergeant-at-Arms in the National Honor Society with a grade average of 94.4 And his good friend Vince Spedale with a 96.8 aver- age is Class President and played on the Fresh- ll f - r , f V , i graduating class, not to mention being Vice-President of the Honor Society. The two Bobs, Dufore and Genauldi, play basketball, and stand at 96.l and 95.9 respec- tively. Not too bad, is it? Our fencing star is Norm Grabo, Honor Society member and vice- president of his class. Our past Honor Society record is just as bright as that of the present. The purpose of the system is to keep order in the halls during the passing periods to keep noise down to a minimum and to guard the bicycles and automobiles in the parking lot stalls, etc. During the three lunch periods a captain, two lieutenants and about twenty guards help to keep the lunchroom clean and orderly. During fire drills the hallguards act as a tire guard and stay on duty untill everyone has vacated the building and then gradually leave the building themselves. The officers are all seniors, and the members must all be juniors or seniors. Al- though it is not required, practically all the members of the Robots are honor students and members of the National Honor Society. Each member specializes in some technical field, such as mechanical design, foundry work, electrical theory, electrlcal construction, heat treating, woodshop or pattern-making. When a club project is decided an, each mem- ber takes some part of the work as his own, When completed, the parts of the project are assembled to make the finished article. Many such projects have been completed in past years, such as the small Van de Graaf ma- chine, the Telsa coil, the Radio transmitter and receiver, and many smaller projects. The projects the club is working on now are the large automatic water still which produces distilled water for use of the members and the school generally, the strobascopic photo- flash lamp, which permits taking pictures of moving objects in l SOOO of a second, thus freezing even the fastest motion, a smaller stroboscope for stopping the motion of rotating objetcs, a working model of a naval cannon, a construction proiect which has cast the Cases and comaleted 20 voltmeters for use in the Physics laboratories. Page Eighty-six Lane Symphon Grchestra QW ANE'S orchestra for years has maintained a standard on a par with professional orchestras in many of our larger cities. The unfailing ability for superior performance, combined with a spirit of co-operation unexcelled, and welded together by its capable director, Paul Schneider, has aided in this continued success. However, there is one factor, the nucleus of future orch- estras, which up to the past semester had been sufficient. That is the con- stantly needed supply of experienced freshman musicians. Now this supply is especially wanted in string instruments, which cannot be taught in the student's four short years at Lane in the time to be used in the orchestra. With young, experienced musicians becoming fewer and fewer, our position as the outstanding high school orchestra in the nation is endangered. The reputation of the Lane Symphony Orchestra and the music department in general, has influenced young musicians to choose Lane as their high school. The sons of many well known musicians have come to Lane, and this reputation has drawn many from every section of Chicago and its suburbs. Through the careful guidance and training of Mr. Schneider, Mr. Grill, and Mr. Blum, these young musicians are taught to work together as well as to improve individually. Daily section rehearsals are held in which every minute flaw of each musician is ironed out. Then weekly there is a general rehearsal. Unexeelled Performance Always ll l llllll li where all the parts of the machine are put together, carefully oiled, and made to work perfectly as a whole. lt is at this general rehearsal that the wonderful co-operative spirit is displayed to its fullest advantage. Lane has contributed graduates ot its music course to virtually every great symphony in the country, including several members in the Chicago Symphony, Many high schools and grade schools in Chicago have Laneites in their music department, and here at Lane, Paul Schneider, a former graduate, heads the music department. But not only in the classical and teach- ing phases of music does Lane claim membership, tor at this time in the Jands of Eddie Howard, Gene Krupa, and others, Lane holds membership. All the instruction, reputation, and co-operative spirit culminate in a concert of near perfection as was given last November 2lst. The concert began with a Schubert favorite, the Rosemude Overture, then followed Mozart's great Symphony No. 40 and Selections from Le cog d' or Rirnsky- Korsakow. For the modern trend the orchestra played the lively London Suite by Eric Coates, and finished with the dissonant brilliance of the Sword Dance from the Gayanne Ballet Suite by Aram Khachaturian. Page Eighty-eight Lane Concert Band N FRIDAY night, November 2Ist. the curtain rose on the 40th semi- annual concert of the Lane music department. A silence of expectancy filled the auditorium, as Capt. Huff raised his baton, and the rousing strains of the Immortal Legions march poured from the concert band with a precision and quality that has made them the envy of every high school band in the mid west. Then followed the Iilting overtune to Die Fledermaus, the popular Fan- tasy and Fugue on Oh Susanna , the majesty of Wagner's Bridal Chorus and Introduction to Act Ill, from Lohengrin Cole Porter Selections, and fin- ally with all the authority and stirring brilliance ofthe circus band, the Lane Concert concluded with the march Barnum and Bailey's Favorite. The spontaneous acclaim of the audience was ample proof of the success of the concert. The foundations of this band are now over forty years old, making it the oldest organized high school band in the city. Like all great musical organ- izations, the Lane band has made it a habit of excelling itself with each per- formance. This habit of excelling has been due in no small part to its ex- cellent conductor for the past twenty years, Capt. G. P. Huff. His ability to direct untrained musicians into the correct channels of development, and Superior Rating Since i920 to create the inspiration in the experienced players that leads to greater achievement has spelled the continued progress ot the Lane concert band. Every day, during the ninth and tenth periods a general rehearsal is held. It is at this rehearsal that one can truly appreciate the involved job of a con- ductor. There the combined qualities ot true pitch, detailed knowledge ot every instrument and its player, and the ability to sense how a composition should be played by merely looking at the score, are used simultaneously. The conductor must, by skillful directing, mold the pure, strong, but pliant 'netal of a band into the shape and interpretation he desires. The undivided attention and co-operation ot every member is needed to achieve this goal. With the older generation under the firm opinion that the younger gen- eration is on the straight and narrow path toward chaos, it would be well tor some of these pessimists to observe the tire and spirit which enters each player, and because ot that, the concert and competitive pretormances on many occasions have nearly reached the ultimate goal. Capt. Hutt has good reason to hold his head high with pride when conducting the band, tor he knows that Lane's concert band is the most brilliant star in the constellation of high school bands. Two members, Kothera and Schnaitman, of last year's team which won the city champion- ship, are still with us this semester but will not be firing as there are no competitions un- til after February, and then they will have graduated lt is hoped that the remaining cadets on the team will be able to keep the honor of the team uv This means a great deal of wom on the cadets part It takes a cool mind and a steady hand to get the best results This cannot b done unless the men ha conf: dence in themselves which comes fr m hours of practice Zfhcy Shao! io Vzvfzfry ff RII- LF TEAM R0 1 I ut. This wasn't the great- est team Lane has ever had but it certainly wasn't the worst. This team was quite good as their record shows. It was a light team, but what it lacked in weight, the fellows made up for in speed, spirit, and most of all, determination. As Coach Ring said, Spirit and determination make a team great. And the Varsity team of l947 had both. The coaches, George Ring and Bill Labant and the team worked hard for every game, whether it was Waller or Schurz. These boys and the coaches deserve a lot of credit, for football practice is no fun. The only fun comes from when they play a game, and yet that is serious work. The team had some regulars from last year's North Section squad, such as Co-cap- tains Conforti and Hrycko. Conforti is the city's finest prep football player and Hrycko is one of the best tacklers. We had a couple of good quarterbacks such as Cherry and Gaseor and a boy who is getting better in every game, Simmons. Gaeseor was playing with a brace on his leg all through the sea- son, which was cuite o handicap to him and the team. Other good players werethe backs, Stevens, Passarelli, Slezak, Gilly, Rabbit Kalina, ansl Boyle. Passarelli was injured in the middle of the season.: this hurt the team pretty bad, for he was quite a hard runner. At the ends we had lnglebrigtsen, Ponder, Kaszniak, Carlson, and Burr. Ponder also was injured early in the season. At tackles and guards we had Co-captain Hrycko, Poloian, Czernek, Raoinski, K i e p p el, Breaker, Safranski, Beaton, and little Max Ponder. At the center we had quite a few good boys such as Staffeldt, Steffanides, and Geschrey, and there are some promising boys who are coming back next year such as Freeman, Burr, Ponder, Simmons, Wachenheim, and a few others. We had a few injured players such as Jim Barr and Carl Cipolla who were side lined for the season. Jim Barr broke his leg in spring training. Carl Cipolla injured his knees in practice last season. He started to practice this season but his knee and orders from the doctor sidelined him. l. Austin action. 2. Mike charges through the line. 3. lt's good for a first and lO in the Sullivan game. Hileman, Mr, Breeden, Howe, Deuschle, Roher, Ratienhauser N THIS page are the pictures of the fel- lows who turn out the Lane Tech Prep Maga- zine. Most of them are equally active on the Annual Staff, as both publications are prac- tically produced by the same group, Few schools in the country are able to pro- duce a magazine like the Tech Prep. This year, and many times before, in its forty years of publication, the Tech Prep has been award- ed the First Place Ratings by critival rating agencies cf the Columbia University, Uni- versity of Minnesota, and the University of lllino 3. The entlre staff of the magazine is com- posed of students, who do all the makeup, writ ng, and publicatioin of material. Assign- ments are made by the editor, with suggestions frorn the staff, and the Photography Depart- ment always co-operates with the writer in illustrating his story. Lane High School is fortunate to have such a fine record of journalistic acheivement. Few schools can boast of two Annuals a year, and their own school magazine each semester. Thus the Lane Tech Prep enters its forty-first Tech Prep Staff lin-,r 1, Editor Dale Hileminrt.
