They occu- pied twelve wide rows of seats. They Q wore dark gray gowns and hats I known as mortar boards. Above them, in the terraced gal-j leries, sat more than five thousand of their parents and friends. City oiiicials and civic leaders looked on . from the raised platform in front of 1 the long rows. . Slowly and impressively the 1,125 rose from their chairs. To ceremonial music they marched to the front of l the amphitheater. Each one was 4 given a rolled parchment and a hand- clasp. ' Triumph of Achievement. ' was their triumph-a moment 1 of achievement. They had completed their four year course at one of the E most modern educational institutions din the country. This was the com- -mencement for the Lane Technical High school with the largest gradua- tion class in the history of the city's high schools. Their teachers called it : a milestone in educational accom- plishment for Chicago. The graduates were told that trou- bled economic conditions were a chal- lenge to them-that their success, if f they won it, would be more endu-ring - than if they were sent out into the world in happier days. i 1 This ,was the theme, too, in ad- dresses at commencements of other J high schools last night. Other exer- 'cises will be held tonight for the ' remainder of Chicago's secondary pub- ilic schools. These institutions are graduating more than 14,000 students, ithe biggest senior class on record. In addition they received the usual academic in- struction. There were 109 students on Lane's honor roll, composed of those whose grades were 90 per cent or better for their four years. The highest average -96.4-was that by Joseph Bidwell, 5428 North Kimball avenue, in the general technical class. Bidwell is planning to continue his studies eith- er at Brown university or at Armour Institute of Technology. Mayor Edward J. Kelly, the princi- pal speaker, told them that oppor- tunity is still as great as ever. He recalled highlights of his own career and counselled the 'graduates to make the most of their training. There is today practically the same opportunity there was forty, years ago, he said. It all depends, on the young man himself. In the next forty years, there will be eve greater changes, greater inventions A bright road lies ahead for the youth who believes in himself, in his parents, in his country. 5 5 ,.
