5,0 il 0 g zz e Greatness Through Advancement This school and this publication can not keep its eyes continually on the road behind. As soon as it passes the milestone, their heads will turn and they shall see what lies before them. The road will look no different, save that their shadows are behind them, and ahead of them is the sun, brighter than ever. Footsteps are yet to be implanted in the dust, memories are yet to be gathered, records are yet to be broken and set, titles are yet to be won, friendships are yet to be made, and lessons on school subjects, on how to act as a gentleman, citizen, and scholar are yet to be taught. They will be implanted, gathered, broken, set, won, made, and taught. They shall be. And when they are implanted, gathered, broken, set, won, made, and taught, then there shall walk from the doors of Lone men, men who have difficult and wonderful times, men who have passed with ease or difficulty, men who will use what they have received from this institution wisely, or not so wisely, nevertheless, they will be men. Our future lies with them. l 233

ELLA BARRETT Lane Tech was grieved to hear that Miss Ella Barrett, teacher of English at Lane was stricken by a cerebral hem- orrage and passed away February 7, l958. She was beloved by all, and as a member of the faculty tor twenty-tour years she gained a reputation for her friendliness and dependability. l-ler death was a severe blow to the school and, indeed to the city. She received all her earlier education in Chicago. She was a graduate of the Chicago Teachers College, received a Ph. B from the University of Chicago, and obtained a Master's degree from from Loyola University. Though devoted to her native Chicago the world was her home , and she traveled extensively, visiting Mexico, South America, Europe, Canada, and Alaska, All of our words, however, could not express our thoughts as well as the words ot one of Miss Barrett's closest associates when she stated: She was a truly cultured person and her death was a real loss to the youth of Chicago. HELEN SHERBAHN Her warm spirit of love and trust lingers as a legacy to those of us who knew Helen Sherbahn for what she was, one who thought no evil, knew rio evil. l-ler unexpected death on November 22, l957, come all too soon in life that gave as generously ot service, l-lelen Sherbahn was indeed an excellent and compassionate teacher, Laneites now dispersed over wide-spread sectors of the globe are grateful tor her ability and conscientiousness as an English teacher. ln her early days at Lane Miss Sherbahn sponsored a public speaking and debating society known as Forum, the students she tutored in this organization won contest after contest in inter-school competitions, But her services did not end there, as the boys soon became accustomed to taking her their problems and aspirations, until she became both their contidante and counsellor. And so passed our way a kind, an unselfish, a 232 warmly affectionate colleague and friend.
