STILL ESSENTIALLY QUIET, the library nevertheless has a different atmosphere than the empty room of l934. . . . from then until now Toward the end of the l92O's, the need for a new school building became almost ur- gent. Through the hard work of Mr. William Bagan, who was l.ane's first principal lin the original buildingl and at the time was Super- intendent of Schools, a grant was obtained and the present 'building was built at Addison and Western. The building was completed in plenty of time to accept its first class in Sep- tember of l934. After the big move was com- pleted, the old building at Sedgwick and Divis- ion became Washburne Trade School. The school public address system, connecting all the class rooms with the office, was completed in the following year. During World War ll our present football stadium was built. The present school offers five major courses: Technical-College Preparatory, Com- mercial Art-College Preparatory, Architectur- al-College Preparatory, Music-College Pre- paratory, and Smith - Hughes courses in machine shop, print shop, auto shop, and art. He spent the remainder of his life in this work. Lane died on August 22, 1906, with many plans still unfulfilled, During his lifetime, Mr. Lane showed many examples of his out- standing integrity. At one time, when an investment of the Board of Education's money proved to be a total loss, Mr. Lane, who had been indirectly connected with the investment, thought it his duty to repay the loss, which was in the tens of thou- sands of dollars. He did this in small payments from his own salary, and he spent many years of his life in paying his self-assumed debt. The main branch of the Lane Tech at Sedgwick and Division opened its doors to 1200 students in September, 1908. The school expanded so rapidly that five other branches were soon opened: the Sheldon Branch at State and Elm, the Kinzie Branch at LaSalle and Ohio, the Franklin Branch on Beethoven, the Adams Branch on Town- send near Chicago, and the Stanley Branch at Franklin and Huron. By 1930, the school had an enrollment of 7000. To handle this overload, 60 rooms scattered throughout the neighborhood and many vacant stores were rented for the use as classrooms, Pheonix Hall, Seward Park, North Side Turner Hall, the Lake Shore Playground, and Lincoln Park were used for gym. and ROTC classes, and the Moody Tabernacle was used as the assembly hall. This tremendous popularity was due to the new courses offered by Lane Tech. Four-year courses in technology, architecture, and general trades were offered, in addition to a two-year course which led to a trade apprenticeship. In 1912, the school opened a pre-vocational department, which provided special training in technical subjects for aa'- vanced sixth, seventh, and eighth grade boys. i i The renowned name of Lane has attracted many outstanding individuals who supervise and coordinate the various activities of our school. They govern our school in an efficient and orderly manner, supplying the school's needs and always striving to improve the instruction and welfare of each individual student. At the head of this organization is the principal, and helping him to perform his duties are the assistant principals and various counselors.
