With the beginning of a structural steel drafting class this semester, the list of specialized courses offered has taken a big step forward. In drawing, however, one must learn the language before attempting the dialects. At Lane, Mr. Schwartz and his colleagues teach both the language and its dialects at the same time by teaching the language through the dialects. Thus, when we take architectural drawing we learn not only that, but also what is basic in it to all forms of drawing. Drawings made in the architectural course are good examples what all draftsmen try to do. The construction and appearance of even the most complicated building must be described with a bare minimum of words. The thing most basic to this and all parts of the wide field of drawing is accuracy, to the extent that more than a thousand lines may be required to delinate one minute detail in decoration. Basic drawing courses are required of all Lane students, and the more advanced ones are available to specialized students of drafting.
