As we walked through the halls of Lane in September of 1951 it hardly seemed possible that we were the big wigs now-that we were the leaders of our school, the examples to the lower classmen. Imagine the excitement of raising money for out trip to New York. The pastry sales, rummage sales, and various other projects kept us busy all year. As Seniors, we at last realized the necessity of making definite decisions as to what paths we are to follow in the future. For many of our boys, Uncle Sam made the decision. The girls really went after the boys at the Leap Year Dance which the Junior Class sponsored. It was the first dance of its kind to be held at Lane and it proved to be very successful. If you like mellow music and soft lights, then the junior-Senior Prom was the outstanding event of the year for you. The Junior Class has had experiences in raising money as a. group and will, there- fore, be prepared to plan projects for their Senior trip next year. Under the coaching of Harry Martin, the team is expected to fare very well against some rather stiff competition-. Since the team lost some fine track performers through graduation, it will rely on some of the newcomers to fill the gap left by these outgoing students. This dance, which is an annual project of the Student Council, is one of the biggest events of the year. This year, after being crowned queen, Ann Everett Yoe reigned over the festivities. The dance was only one of the many events sponsored by the Student Council during the past year. Under the able leadership of Jesse Wilson, president, Buddy John- son, vice-president, and Ellen McLaughlin, secretary-treasurer, the Student Council stressed the importance of an honor system, brought order to assemblies, and organized a courtesy campaign. It has gained a total of 558 and 1X6 points. For the first time at Lane we have had a Girls' Athletic Association. Its ofhcers were: President, Mary Slaughter, Vice-President, Jackie Edwards, and Secretary-Treasurer, Dolores Morris. Amid shouts of good-by , Confederate flags, baggage, parents, and per- haps a few tears, the seniors departed on April 30 for a four-day excursion in New York. Mary Slaughter won the Women's Singles of the Hot Springs Tennis Tournament on April 13. In the District Contest the band won top rating Cas usualb. During the year, Bernice Pleasants became Mrs. Ted Reese. At the S. I. P. A. convention, the Bumblebee won the First Place Trophy Award, the Lanetime got a first place rating, and Teen Town Timen and the 1951 Chain received honor awards. On May 10, Virgie Kirby was chosen queen to reign over the Junior- Senior Prom, which was a huge success. Exams are approaching fast, and lower classmen, as well as seniors, are beginning to cram.
