Once again it undertook a Homecoming week-end, and although the bonfire was unavoidably cut out, everything else was a lot of fun. Barbara Barr was the homecoming queen with four lower class- men as attendants. 1 Council members have Worked hard to keep the halls clear of paper this year. They received the co-operation of the Whole school in the effort to keep the candy privi- leges. Wayne did a good job of guiding the council, and much credit should also be be given to Ray Samuels on his work with the Honor Committee. Rather than merely punishing for offenses, the committee showed the student his mistakes and helped him to correct them. A big objective of the club has been to rid our halls, rooms, and cafeteria of the trash and paper which have, heretofore, been a source of annoyance. Perhaps the most desirable function of the club has been the opportunity to usher at the various programs which were held at Lane this year. Even though the ushers, in their other duties of handling lunch lines and main- taining good order, may seem a little hard at times, pupils generally realize that what they do is for the betterment of the school, and appreciate their service. The I,m1f'f2'n1c staff has again turned out a fine school newspaper. The I,uncfin11', printed every three weeks by a group of conscientious and hard working students, was read by nearly everyone at Lane. At the end of every three weeks, crowds could be seen heading for their homerooms to get their L!l'H!'l'1'IlIl'S. This year the I,uncf'inzc devoted considerable space to acquainting the students with their teachers. Several new teachers were interviewed, and the Laizefimc staff did a write-up about the teachers and where they had taught before. Included also were gossip columns, Lane Lights , and a wide coverage of school news. As always, the Imzzcfinzrf had an up-to-date and interesting sport section under the editorship of Skeeter McCauley. page fifty-seven Standing: B. Harlow, Mrs. Meade, B. Davenport, A. This was a familiar question to the members of the Business Staff, a hard-working group of boys and girls with one thought in mind: to make possible the publication of a better CHAIN, a better Lafnefime, and a better Bumblebee. Their job was selling advertisements to the merchants of Charlottesville. Be- cause of their persistence and unselfishness in giving their time, they were able to reach their goal for this year. Miss Alice Elam was sponsor of the group, and the members were from the various grades in school. Miss Jones, another business staff sponsor, had charge of publication subscriptions. fatal iv'-1 .1. For the first time, they presented a Christmas cantata, The Chimes of the Holy Night. A candle light procession, in which the Glee Club members took part, preceded the per- formance and gave the Choir members a chance to show off their new robes. Two school assemblies were given by the Choir and the Glee Club during the year. The Choir presented a program at the University Hospital and the Vesper Services at the University Chapel. . The choir was Well represented at the District Festival held in Fairfax this year. There were several small groups, as well as the regular Choir. Five represen- tatives were sent from the Choir to Danville to participate in the All West Sectional Choir. They were Jean Smith, Betty Staples, Harold Collier, Benton Barr, and Leon- ard Drumheller. U . Also included in the Choir schedule was a Spring Concert and participation in the Baccalaureate Service. Choir ofiicers were elected twice during the year. Those elected for the first semester were Ronald Craft, presidentg Johnny Angel, vice-president, Betty Byrd, sec- retary, and Leonard Drumheller, treasurer. At the end of the first semester, Harold Collier became president and Benton Barr, vice-president. The other officers remained the same. The rest of the Choir staff was made up of Betty Staples, soprano section head: Peggy Haynes, alto section headg Jerry Fisher, bass section head, and Stan Makielski, tenor section head. The Glee Club furnishes material for the Choir in the coming year. They have participated in almost every musical event that the Choir has. Their officers for the past year were Willis-Elaine Woodle, presidentg Bobby Winstead, vice-president, and Peggy Jameson, secretary-treasurer. Mrs. Beecher Patterson is the director of both groups. For the further enjoyment of the students, a one-act play Oh, Johmzyfn was presented in an assembly. To become a member one must earn a letter in one of the four varsity sports: football, basketball, baseball, or track. A slight initiation is also re- quired. This year the club elected George Spencer as president, but Uncle Sam sent his greetings , and Billy Shipp took over as president. One of the club's annual activities is the Christmas dance. It was given on December 21. As usual it was a success. Top: Hawkins, Shipp, and Deane at the candy bar Bottom: Initiation-Ride 'em cowboy An outstanding honor has come to two of the C club members. George Spencer, as tackle, and Tommy Theodose, as quarter- back, were given honorable mention by the Associated Press in naming the All-American Football team for high schools during the past season. George had received All-State honors the previous year. Although this year Lane's football team did not have an exceptional season, it did win five games out of ten. In many of the games the Black Knights were hamper- ed by loss of some of their first-string players. ln defensive tactics Lane was helped greatly by Thraves and Spencer. On of- fense, if it had not been for the passing of Tommy Theodose, Lane might have been lost. Several of the games were played in below-freezing weather, but this didn't seem to trouble the team very much. The game with Fredericksburg was the season's cold- est, Lane winning 42-0. Tillie Pace and Edna Proffitt did a great job as head cheerleaders. By their sincere interest and ever-present school spirit, the cheerleaders greatly boosted the morale of the team. BASKETBALL llasketlaall, the sport that has the largest number ot' spectators in the nation, came to Lane this year after the Christmas holidays when practice got underway for the first game, on January 9, with Fork Union. From excellent material Coach Smith developed a team that won nine of the fourteen games scheduled. The season had its share of' amusing incidents, thrilled-packed, hotly-contested games, and one-sided scores. In the first Woodberry game one of the Lane players gen- erously attempted to put the ball in the opponents' basket. In the second Woodberry game, Woodlierry had an unusual offensive line-up. Our boys did not understand it at first, but they caught on and went on to win 50-41. In three games Lane more than doubled the score against opposing teams and was itself once on the lower end of a doubled score.
