Students everywhere are realizing that only in a democracy can they acquire a true education-edlv cation for life-not death. American high school youth ap-- preciates our armed forces, who fight and die that America may not become a pleasant memory. This vanguard of free- dom, happiness and real living is on a victorious marcwh all over the World. The CHAIN staff thinks the United States Armed Forces a most appropriate theme for this, the twenty- iifth link of the CHAIN. ARMY, NAVY, AIR CORPS, AND MARINES, We proudly salute you! V... The pupils of Lane High School have entered Whole-heartedly into the victory program. Lane has joined with thousands of schools all over the country in entering the Schools at War program, outlined and sponsored by the Treasury Department of the National Government, and with the Victory Corps Movement, whose na- tional leader is Captain Eddie Rickenbacker, Like all the patriotic institutions, Lane High has modified its curriculum to meet the needs of a community desirous of making the best possible contribution to the war effort. During the state-wide scrap drive, over four hundred students participated in collecting over three hundred thousand pounds. Their efforts were rewarded by receiving second place honor from the state. Competition bond drives have been held in the school during the year. In the first drive, the students worked successfully to collect over twenty thousand dollars worth of bonds and stamps. Accommodating the sale, the Lane High School Band gave a concert for which the ad- mission was saving stamps bought at the school. To stimulate interest in the second war loan drive, in which over sixty-two thousand dollars worth were sold, the senior class sponsored a bond ball. Classes and organizations in the school nominated candidates for the queen whom the Mayor crowned at the ball. The Victory Corps, which has over two hundred members, is an organization to train youth for that War service which will come after they leave school, and to provide active participation of youth in the community's war effort while they are still in school. To meet the requirements for membership in the corps, new courses have been started which include emphasis on a pro- gram of physical fitness combined with military drill for boys and girls. New vocational courses have been offered to students who wish to participate in the victory program. These courses are pre-flight physics and mathematics, pre-flight aeronautics, and automobile mechanics. The call for boys and girls to help in the civilian defense corps was answered by many Lane students. There are seventy-three spotters, ninety air-raid messengers, and nine air-raid wardens. The Junior Red Cross held a campaign which over two hundred Laneites supported by their contributions. Under sponsorship of the National Red Cross and the homemaking department of Lane, girls knitted, made surgical dressings, utility bags, wash cloths, and aided in the col- lecting of coat-hangers. Every soldier declares that nothing means so much as to be remembered by the folks back home. Lane students brought cheer to former Lane students now in service overseas by send- ing them gift boxes at Christmas. Over two hundred dollars were spent on a total of sixty-three boxes. Tahese boxes were sent to service men in Alaska, Panama, Newfoundland, England, Ice- land, Porto Rico, Hawaiian Islands, India, Australia, New Zealand, Solomon Islands, and South America. With the inevitable goal of victory ahead of us, Lane students and teachers are working to- gether to bring that goal closer. The local draft board has been most cooperative, the Daily Progress was a constant source, and Word-of-mouth reports have been accepted. It is possible that some whose names appear hereon were not accepted for military service, although every effort has been made to have it as accurate as may be. We have tried to include all former pupils of Lane, regardless of the length of time they attended. To those Whose names we have missed, our sincere apologies. The list was closed as of April 30, 1043. Names oil' those not in uniform were not included, even though they had been accepted and were awaiting call, except that those rlischarged were retained. l33l Guilford Dudley Acker .l1iC1YV3.1'Cl 'Weaver Adams Roscoe Summer Adams, Jr. lvlary L. T 10 e c as 1 wer This year has been a very successful one for the Girls' Hi-Y under the leadership of our pres- ident, Shirley Loving and our sponsors, Miss Lillian Butt and Mrs. Julia Alderman. In September a tea was given for the new girls at Lane so that they could become better acquainted with one another. Dolls Ware dressed at Christmas for the less fortunate children in our community. A con- tribution Was also made to the Santa Claus Club. Together with the other Hi-Y's a Christmas play was presented. In the earlier part of the year the club had a rummage sale to supply money for our activities. . Many of the members have contributed their time to do Red Cross work. Throughout the year various churches were attended in a body. BOYS, SENIOR HI-Y HUNDLEY LAWMAN PETERSON PATILLO OFFICERS LOUIS HUNDLEY ..,.... ...,........... ..,........... ...........,.. This year the Senior Boys' I-Ii-Y helped the Red Cross to collect books to be distributed among the soldiers. Tihe Hi-Y also gave Christmas baskets to Charlottesville's needy. Several professional men spoke on their life Work at the meetings of the club. The speeches were interesting and helpful. With the other Hi-Y groups, the club attended various churches once a month. The club gave a Christmas assembly with the Choir. Two dances were sponsored, the best of which was the annual Best Girl Banquet and Dance in the spring. E441 - ' '-. 4 4 ' ' ' ' 1 1 W 'W'- WW'W '? The girls com- pletely clothed and dressed her, gave her toys, games, and half of the refreshments from the party. In the fall a tea was given for all new girls at Lane. The Senior club had charge of making the refreshments and the Junior club served. As usual the Hi-Y took part in the annual Christmas assembly. Also at Christmas the girls dressed dolls for the Mothers' Club. Another project of the Hi-Y has been to start a general religious movement in the school by the use of Sentence Prayers at their meetings. The club has t-ried to promote attendance at church through the practice of going there in a body. This year's staff couldn't stop the rain that lasted the first two months of school, stopping all photographing . . . the photographer spraining his ankle . . . materials being unavailable due to war priorities. You see, the government doesn't consider our annual a neces- sity to the War, but it certainly boosts our morale. The staff was made up of a few people who worked, and the rest just sat and had a lot of fun deciding which picture was best and picking out snaps. Don't be fooled though. The loss of many first rate singers has slowed the progress of the Choir this year, but it is at last swinging along. Lane lost a very popular choir leader when Mrs. Catherine Martin left to teach at St. Anne's, but her place has been ably filled by Mrs. C. J. M. Blume, Who, in a very short time, has gained the respect and admiration of every choir member. The Chimes of Normandy, an operetta by Robert Planquette, was given by the musical folk at Lane -this year, and all of the choral Work was done by the Choir. This proved to be one of the most popular operettas ever given at Lane, due to the splendid cooperation the Choir was given by the student body. E831 REMINISCING After years of waiting and wistful thinking, the dream of a lifetime comes true . . . Seniors at last! Does it seem possible that we were once timid, frightened Freshmen? But this, our Senior year, has been the most priceless of all and has meant so very much to us. The selection of Senior rings, the dances, the most successful Senior play, the hurrying and scurrying to get the Annual out on time, and the memorable Victory Ball under the sponsorship of our class-these things will always remain in our memory. For our last year in high school, a happy but short one, we selected as our class oiiicers Alfred Peterson, Presidentg Ralph Holland, Vice-Presi- dent, Barbara Gerhart, Secretary, Philip Peterson, Treasurer. They were very efficient along with the invaluable aid of our sponsors, Miss Horwitz and Mr. Johnson. As June approached, what a huge amount of worrying about examina- tions we did before the climax-the Senior banquet, the Senior dances, the Senior picnic, and graduation! l84l SENIOR DIRECTORY SENIOR DIRECTORY BARNETT, CECIL AUBREY .....,............,.,....,..........,., ....... ............,...,.,...., ..,.............. ..,....,..........., 2 3 2 0 Fontaine Avenue Homeroom President, '39-'40, Student Council, '40-'41, Social Committee, '40-'41, President, Sophomore Class, '40-'41, President, Junior Class, '41-'42, Vice-President, Fourth District Hi-Y, '42-'43, Delegate Hi-Y Conference, '42-'43, Ushers Club, '40-'43, President, Ushers Club, '42-'43, Junior Boys' Hi-Y, '40-'41, Senior Boys' Hi-Y, '41-'43, Junior Football, '40-'41, Varsity Football, '41-'42, Boxing, '39-43, President, Student Council, '42-'43, Delegate, State Student Council Convention, '42-'43, C Club, '42-'43, News Editor, Mid- way Student, '42-'43, Softball, '39-'40, Council Member, Victory Corps, '42,'43, President-Elect, Senior Boys' Hi-Y, '42-'43, Delegate, Tri-County Student Council Conference, '40-'41, Victory Corps, '42-'43, Co-Captain Junior Football, '40-'41.
