R-,, -. 0awz4eof3l'uJ4f Several outstanding changes have been made in the course of study at Lane during the last three years. The main one is the addition of the junior high school. Pupils in this eighth grade are under the guidance of teachers who study their abilities and interests and formulate a suit- able program accordingly. In these important earlier years much stress is placed on good habits, right attitudes, and the knowledge required to make good citizens. Pupils in the senior high school have a number of different courses to pick from. There are three diplomas offered to graduates-general, com- mercial, and college preparatory. All of these diplomas offer practical training for the student for making a living and taking his place as an active citizen in his community. Pupils may receive training in industrial arts, college preparatory subjects, home economics, and subjects in prepa- ration for those pupils who plan to follow a commercial occupation. The school also provides physical and health education for every stu- dent. 'His cultural side, too, is not neglected, for Lane has ventured far in the field of music, dramatics, and art. i441 H 6. .d.I Sneed Associate Edz'to'r JOAN HOLSTEAD Faculty Editor LYTELLE MILLER Foofztro Editor ELLEN BUFORD Sports Editors DICK MOPHERSON IMOGENE MARSHALL Typists JOAN HOLSTEAD PATSY EDWARDS , - fr 5 I , , X 73 ,-ooo L-'rw f - f 4- A K A 4 7fze efmin A Xxx I Editor-in-Chief Senior Editor NOBLE SNEED .Iurntor Ropresentattzfes EVELYN MAHANES PHILIP PETERSON PATSY EDWARDS Aotizfitiex Editors LUOILLE EYE LOUISE SOUTHARD Advertising Stay? Its members, feeling that the theatre has a real place in high school life, seek to entertain the school as a whole through the medium of drama, both on the stage and over the public address system. The chief activity of the Players Club is its annual three-act play. This past year the chosen production was Icebourld, by Owen Davis, which was presented December 4 and 5. Among the minor activities of the club are numerous one-act plays and skits presented at the meetings for the entertainment of the members and for the purpose of trying out candidates for admission. The club also gives radio skits for the benefit of the entire school. I61l 14111 Glad First Roux' I-3. Hawthorne, H. Dudley, S. Desper, E. Dorrier, Ada Berrey fSponsorJ, R. Crenshaw, B. Shepherd, V. 'N H571 LANE-CULPEPER GAME Wafzallq aaoifdall Reuune' LANE-CULPEPER The Lane varsity started the season with a bang on September 19 by beating Culpeper 6-0 in a close, hard fought game. The first quarter was tight, but in the second quarter a Culpeper fumble was recovered on her own three-yard line. All the backiield contributed in carrying it to the five, where Campbell took it over for the only score of the game. Culpeper's fighting Warriors got With- in the Lane ten-yard line twice in the second half with their vaunted air attack, but both times the line held. Barnett and Campbell played an outstanding game in the line and backfield, respectively, in the 6-0 victory over the Class C Champions. LANE-PORTSMOUTH The first night game of the season took place in Portsmouth on September 7, Lane coming out on the short end of a 12-0 score. Portsmouth set up her scores with powerful off-tackle thrusts. Lane's offense clicked until the team got to pay dirt where they bogged down. Lane made only one threat, a long march in the last quarter led by Long. Lane's cenier, Wade, was injured in this game and was out for the rest of the season. LANE-ALEXANDRIA In the second straight night game Lane lost 15-0, although the team outplayed George Wash- ington. They excelled their opponents in every department, but G. W. capitalized on several breaks to score. Curtiss Kirby, former Lane-ite, led Alexandria to victory with his running and long high kicks. Lang excelled in the line While Campbell and Kindred led the running attack as usual. l63l LANE-LYNCHBURG After an open date Lane traveled to Lynchburg on October 18. The Lane-ites looked as if they were going to pull an upset by threatening in the lilrsti quarter. Bult after the first quarter it was a routg for Lynchburg, led by Blanks, scored at will, although our team fought valiantly against their heavier opponents. The score was 26-0. LAN E-SALEM In the second home game of the year, the underdogs from Salem defeated Lane 12-0, in a steady drizzle in Scott Stadium. Lane showed a revised line-up, but this failed to save the day, for Lane never threatened seriously after Campbell carried the ball into enemy territory with a long run early in the game. LANE-DANVILLE Txaveling to Danville on October 25, Lane suffered another defeat to the tune of 26-6. Redman, Danville halfback, scored two of the touchdowns and paved the way for the rest. Campbell got off several nice runs, and Kindred made our only score on a last quarter run of 27 yards. LANE-THOMAS JEFFERSON Lane finally got in the groove on November 7 and gave T. J. a run for the money. In a first- quarter assault Lane penetrated the T.-J. ten-yard line but was soon stopped. Strickler, standing on his fifteen, kicked a perfect field goal to put Lane in front 3-0. Fighting valiantly and aided by Campbell's magnificent punts, Lane pushed T. J. around for three quarters. But finally, when the game seemed in the bag, the Richmond team threvv a long desperate pass that connected on our one- foot line. On the next play they drove it over for a final score of 6-3. With their offense clicking on November 14 the Lane-ites walloped a fast V.S.D.B. eleven, 40-14. Although the visitors scored first on a pass, Lane scored four touchdowns with Campbell, Price, and Kindred all going over, to leave at the halftime with a score of 26-14 in our favor. The offensive stars of the game, Kindred and Campbell, scored again in the last quarter to win 40-14. Barnett, Hogue, and Holland showed up well in the line. LANE-FREDERICKSBURG Playing heads-up football for the third straight week, Lane made the last game a successful one by downing Fredericksburg 25-7. Fredericksburg, aided by two penalties, scored within the first two minutes. But this lead was short lived, for on Lane's first play from scrimmage, Kindred was tackled but lateraled to Campbell who raced 70 yards for a touchdown. Shortly afterwards Campbell again broke away, this time for 60 yards to the fifteen, from which Kindred scored to make the halftime score 13-7. Lane continued this spree and scored two more touchdowns in the last half. The line, led by acting captain Barnett, stopped their opponents' running attacks dead. Holland Hogue, and Hamm also played well in their last game. l70l Our Score 515 , 415 . sag .. Name Bub Thomas , ., Len Coiner.. . Hubert Bolick , ,.. Hilton Eidelman Eugene Desper., James Coiner. ,. The teams had veterans of last year who helped greatly. With them came a flock of green horns who were eager beginners, and some are very promising for next season. The teams' matches this year were largely intramural and added greatly to the school's in- creasing interest. Although tennis does not merit a major letter , it is an up-and-coming sport at Lane. I i751 LANE-FLUVANNA GAME Rauma' Winning every game but two, Lane's basketball team for the 1942 season had the most success- ful year since Mrs. Julia Alderman has been coach. The team showed perfect teamwork, however, only after hours of endless practice and preparation. The squad was led through the season by Co- Captains Imogene Marshall and Virginia Dudley. The season was opened November 17 by a game with Jefferson School of Commerce. Fast playing and side-line passing placed Lane on the long end of 46-16 score. On November 21, Lane's sextet nosed out Greenwood's county champions in our second game of the season. Greenwood rang up the first score. However, our girls got into pace and at the half were leading 23-11 and, when the game was over, were still ahead 30-24. The Lane sexteit proved again to be on their toes November 28 in a practice game with the Alumnae. Ann Best was high scorer of the evening, scoring 18 points. Lane led in the final score 25-12. The most exciting game played in our gym during the season was with Fluvanna. The teams were so evenly matched that winning or losing was a matter of which team shot the last goal. It was a hard fought game, but Fluvanna came out one point ahead, the final score being 16-15. In a game on December 5, the Lane squad triumphed over the Independents of the city. Lane soon got in the lead and stayed there until the final score was 47-12. Lane marked another victory of the season when the girls defeated Mclntire 35-14. At the end of the first half the score stood in favor of Lane, 22-8. Ann Best totaled 12 of the points while Imogene Marshall and Kathleen Thomasson addei 13 points to the final SCOPE. The Lane squad next engaged in a double-header against the V. S. D. B. squad in Staunton. There was perfect teamwork throughout the game and 53 points were scored by the Lane-iles while the opponents scored only ll. On December 12, the Lane-ites went to Fluvanna, hoping to stage a comeback against the un- defeated team. However, it seemed that the odds were against them and even after a splendid fight the opponents led 29-19. t 76 1 In the last game before Christmas Lane played hostess to the Independents again on December 18. Because of the outstanding teamwork showed by the Lane squad they easily won in a victory 38-14. Three of the Lane teams were used in the game with Earlysville. Phyllis Faulconer, Eleanor Sclater, Kaihleen Thomasson, and Ann Best were in the limelight- as forwards. LuVera Woodson, Stella Allen, and Virginia Dudley were outstanding for close guarding and clever lloorwork. The score of the game with Meriwether Lewis was 29-9. Again the squad showed perfect team- work. The season ended with a glorious victory, 57-ll, over V. S. D. B. Pint-sized Ann Best rang up 14 points in the first quarter and 22 points in the entire game. Kathleen Thomasson accounted for ll points while Imogene Marshall dropped in 14 points. Mary Morris and Phyllis Faulconer scored the other 10 points. ln the defense line Stella Allen, Patsy Davis, and Virginia Dudley showed the opposing ieam how to play ball. Lane's Junior Varsity met St. Anne's team March 12 in St. Anne's gym. Overcoming the handicap of taller players, Lane scored the first points and at the half were leading 10-4. The op- posing guards would pass the ball to their forwards only to have it intercepted by members of the Lane squad. The battle ended 18-10 with Lane's forces leading. qw' yma. wma, vm First Row: J.
