Misses Ruth Hornsby, Natalie Holladay and Ruth Shumate were added to the school personnel. Sept. 2 — Happened to be up near Venable Field today, and was surprised to find that over 100 boys had responded to Coach Martin’s announcement of team organizations. From the looks of them we should go to the “But- tercup Bowl. ' ' Sept. 5 — Was talking to Miss Bolen today and found that our newcomers hail from far-flung parts of the U. S. In fact, they spread from California to Mas- sachusetts. Sept. 6 — If I don’t stop mean- dering and settle down to work, nothing will be accomplished. Sept. 7 — Mr. Walker lived up to his old standards by telling his favorite LOG “ConCave” joke. Sept. 8 — Do you realize that half the married people are women? Sept. 9 — Since I’m finally a Senior, I attended our preliminary meeting. “Foots” I lolland, our Junior president last year, presided over the unanimous elec- tion of Miss Horvvitz and Mr. Walker as sponsors. They’ve been Senior favorites for many years. Sept. 12 — They tell me that Alice Pritchett will guide the Student Council this year. She is to be supported by Minor Smith, John Harloe, and Virgil Leake as vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, respectively. Sept. 13 — No more being run over or knocked down in the halls. The Ushers Club has been revived, following last year’s success. This year Corbette King will preside, with Nicky Lacy as secretary. Sept. 14 — That Holland boy must have made a good president last year; so we chose him for our Senior president. (I voted for you, “Foots.”) Anita Hawkins, Minor Smith, W illie Barnett, and Lourine Hildebrand aid. Sept. 15 — Ah! The Ides of September. To celebrate this worthy date, the Metcalf Literary Societv had its club initiations. The new members dressed as characters ol well-known books. They were on silence pledges and attempted to carry raw eggs all day without catastrophes. Skpt. 16 — (iuess I ' ll have to be careful now, since the Ushers Club has stationed its officers at their posts. They look very businesslike, too. Skpt. 17 — Copy-Cat, Copy-Cat! The Hayes initiations were practically the same as the Metcalf’s. The students seem to approve of the new school site, as the majority voted ves in a recent polk Skpt. 20 — The city seems to approve of a new school, too. The bond issue was passed for the Preston Avenue location. Skpt. 21 1 snooped on the Sophomore meeting and found that they elected Hobby Ott as president ; Steve Martin, vice-president ; David Kline, treasurer; and Hub Lacy, secretary. Miss Butt and Mr. Smoot will sponsor. Skpt. 22— Wonder what attracts me to Venable Field so often? Anyway, I was well rewarded today. Bruce Reynolds was demonstrating some feats in block- ing, which were just too funny. The whole team was in an uproar. Skpt. 23 — Rah ! Rah ! Get out your old megaphone and cheer the home team. Lane started the season beautifully by a 12-0 victory over Staunton Hi. Sept. 26 — Don’t those beer jackets just fascinate you? No wonder 1 accomplish so little. I sit up through all my classes and read the crazy inscriptions. Skpt. 27 — At the Girls’ Senior Hi-Y meeting this afternoon we decided to try to hold Bible classes in the home rooms. This should prove quite interesting and educational. Skpt. 28 — ’Though I wasn ' t supposed to be there, I managed to sneak into the assembly for the lower classmen given by ' the Student Council. Officers of all clubs spoke and described the purposes of their organizations. I found out quite a lot 1 didn ' t know. Sept. 29 — I see we have quite a few new books in the library ' . Guess 1 ’ll have to do more reading. Sept. 30 — Woe is us. After losing to Alexandria this after- noon with a score of 12-0, it seems that everyone sought 63 something to raise his spirits. Lane was well represented at the 18’ ' Club dance, although that club isn’t a school organization. Oct. 3 — Heck ! Our ole home room ain ' t what she used to be.” We didn’t even get honorable mention in the Combination Ticket Contest. Room 12 and Lab. 1 won the banners for the most ticket sales since Septem- ber 1. Oct. d — Miss Jansen tells me her debating team is studying a question for their first debate. She’s quite secretive about it though. Oct. 5 — Room 11 gave the cutest assembly today. Their mountaineer skit fairly brought down the house. Oct. 6 — Actors and actresses must be plentiful, as the Players Club found nine new ones that suited them. Oct. 7 — The first Freshman pictures for the annual were taken. This is a busy day. The Sophomores had their pitchers tuck.” Oct. 12 — I betcha’ that more knees have been bent these last few weeks of the mints” craze than ever before. 1 always thought crossed fingers would act just as a rabbit foot. Oct. 13 — Certainly am glad I’m a home room president, ’cause we had more fun today nominating Alice Pritchett, Ann Warwick, Elizabeth Buford, Nicky Lacy, and Martha Uedemann as candidates for Hallowe’en queen. Pictures of Haves and Metcalf were taken, too. Oct. 14 — The Girls’ (dee Club struck a pose for Mr. Gitchell and the staff this fine morning. Even Seniors mixed at the “Freshman Mixer.” The committee is mad be- cause the popsicles ran out before they got any. Oct. 15 — Good ole Lane was victorious again, this time 27-0 over Danville. Oct. 17 — Things are looking up. I see even the Girls Glee Club initiates wore their hair revealinglv up, their dresses backwards, and odd socks and shoes. We wish someone would get some new ideas. Oct. 18 — Surely am getting tired of adjusting the shades for those pictures. This time it was for the Girls and Hoys Junior Hi A . Oct. 19 — Blackie,” assisted bv the pupils of room 12, gave an assembly on book characters. The canine stole the show, even from Jimmy (Handsome) Gianakos. Oct. 20 — Called Mr. Gitchell again today to take the Student Council and Players Club pictures. Wonder if he gets tired of hauling that birdie around? Oct. 21 — I see we have some good liars here, too. To be nice, we’ll call them Tall Story Tellers. Anyway, the winners of the Sophomore contest were Hazel Bishop, Ed Lee, and Bub Lacy. Nov. 11 Room 26 gave an Armistice Day Program in which Mr. Kovacs spoke on ‘‘Democracy’s Last Stand in Europe,” and very interesting, too. I think we should declare war on Glass I li for beating us 21-7. Nov. 14 — Come on, everyone, give ’til it hurts to the Red Cross Drive. Wouldn’t vou like to feel that you’d helped, even if you had to miss a movie or two? i Nov. 15— The Metcalf actually wants the dues paid before December 20, il vou intend to stay on the roll. This close to Christmas, too! Nov. 16 — Attended the Glee Club Assembly. It was quite a novel combination of swing and the classics. The audience nearly wore Reva out with encores. Nov. 19 — The bovs went all the way to Danville and then let D. M. I. beat us 13-0. There oughta’ be a law. Of course, the honey- moon isn ' t over vet, but you just wait : the first hundred years are the hardest. Nov. 29 — Ship plowed sou - east through heavy seas, sails reefed, water in the hold. Dec. 1 — In view of our recent success in the spelling bees, a spelling club has been organized under the leadership of Paul Fin- negan. Wish he’d been here when I tried to spell Massachusetts. 67 Dec. 2 — No wonder 1 couldn’t hnd my other shirt this morning. The Girls’ Ili-Y had a rummage sale. Just ask Tommy Johnson. Jan. 5 — After much deliberation, the committee decided to leave the Senior rings the same as before. Any change would have caused an advance in price. Pocketbooks screamed so loud that thev had to be considered. Jan. 6 — Lane ' s basketball boys lost 16-13 to Shenandoah and the girls won 16-15. The Senior Class voted on its features today. The school anx- iously awaits the results. Feb. 23 — The features were announced and all selections seemed to meet with approval. The olis’’ and “ahs” were just as loud this year as last when Jimmy G. kept his place of “Best Looking Boy.” Jan. 6 — Lane-Shenandoa h Game Feb. 2-1 — At last the composite “Dream Girl” has appeared. Wonder if the boys will cut up like they do on the football trips? Miss Horwitz will take care of that I guess. Mar. 27 — Todav should have been declared a holiday. We do have some realh bright people here, after all. The hiking must have helped. Boy! The Seniors have been busy! They got a picnic and hay ride, too. I ' m still shaking hav seeds from my hair. Then, as I recall (though I may be slightly mixed up), the Y-L Contests came oft at the University. Last but not least we went to the closing festivities. All of a sudden I found it was time to put on my monkey hat and gown and attend the baccalaureate sermon at the Christian Church. The first Senior final, the banquet, graduation, and the last Senior final have come in a whirl. These have been a gay four years, packed with memories. Good-bye! Lane! We hope to represent you well in the lives we take up from here. 76 Athletics Martin (Coach), Watson (Manager), Holland, Smith ( Co-Captains ) SQUAD II. Watson, Lushbauoh, P. Smith, B Watson, W.
