Our iirst social function was a dance at the new city armory with music supplied by the orchestra of Vincent Tramonte. At Christmas we had a party with games, bobbing for apples, races, and refreshments. Then on the week-end of March 18, we went to see the sights of the big city of Wfashington. Next we all turned out for the senior play, The lfffholc Townls' Talking, which had been given a few years previously with an all-faculty cast. All during the year, Mr. Sulfridge and VVilbur Fitzhugh secured speakers with diierent careers to talk to us about the rewards and the qualifications of their particular work. XVII l'l'I.lJl'K CEUAIN STUDENT CGUNCIL The original purpose of the Student Council was to give the students an opportunity for a partial degree of self-government. ln allowing them this privi- lege, the Council has promoted a better understanding between the student body and the faculty. It has helped to familiarize the students with the regulations and true spirit ol' the school. The lirst meeting of the Student Council was held in September to elect .ililicers for the fall term, From that day on it has served the school faithfully and successfully. With its purpose in mind, this year's Council has tried to be a real help to the school. ln order to relieve con fusion it sponsored a campaign against running in the school, chatting between classes, and undue congestion of the halls. VVith the help ot' Miss llerrey and Mr. Wallcei' and the cooperation of various committees, the Achievement Award System was changed in several Ways to make it more practical and effective. Nurnerous other plans were set aside for further consideration. The students of Lane have continued to give their cooperation and support, and their Student Council has each year taken a more important part in the life and activities of the school. h'VA'l'SUN, hliUltRAY, CoI.i.1i:n, VVA1.iuaR f.S'pou.mrj, BERREY f,S'f1on.vnrj, Covvs, VVA1'soN, Cmsnotxi l'lAf:lcMAN, Mt'CiJlc, C.Mm1lt'iflAlcl., Glmvlas, F1mNc14:, lX'lixHAN, DAVIS, HOUFF GIANAKIJS, SPICER, Smrrl-1, UIQDIQMANN, GI-212, CoNi:noN, VVHITLOCK, ELL1o'1'1' l'715'r'rolz, QLJARLEQ-1, SMITH, X1VA'r'rs 1938 fed' ,gal lnCmyJe' CED CHAI N Cuclucfxx jlmm CUCFIIQAN. . . The club was divided into three teams xx ho vied for the honor of giving the best programs. The keen sense of competi- tion helped much in making tfie programs more wo1'tlnrhile. During the lirst term, a part-time study was made of certain well known authors. The lives and some of the works of these men were read and discussed to familiarize the students with great characters in the literary world. The second term work began in earnest. Many of the programs for meetings were made up of studies in reading, debating, and public speaking. These activi- lies were discussed and examples of them given. All members were encouraged to take a part to help develop their literary talents. Some from these contests were selected to be sent to the Literary League Contest. Th assembly program, feauring llilly Tarleton, Mary Catharine Payne, Montie Meeks, Charlotte Mahan, and Betty Ann Rehrendt in His First Sliazm, was said to have been a decided success. The program, under the direction of the sponsors of the two organizations, lVl'rs. lf. O. McCue, Ir., Miss Hebe Ruggieri, and Mr. E. On lVlarch 23 the Girls' Glee Club presented another assembly which demon- strated the rise of American music to its present day standard. The aim of the club was not to try to get lTlO1'C members than any other club, but to have only a reasonable number so that the members could get the best dramatic training possible under such conditions. In the early part of the year, the club gave its assembly. The program was devoted to showing the school the fundamentals and types of acting. The purpose was illustrated by short sketches and monologues. In December the members presented as their annual play, Comiu' Thru' Tlzv Nyc, a three-act comedy with a touch of mystery and romance, starring Elizabeth lluford and Lawrence Snoddy. A dance followed the play on the last night. During the spring term the club gave its attention to preparing for participa- tion in the annual one-act play contest at the University. lhucl-:, l-llama, HAM, i7lIl'll.l'1Y, Fl'l'ZHUtlH, N1cK1s1.s K.S'fmn.wrj, BOLEN fSpon.v0rj, Hovl-nz, l312'r'rola, X7AI.liN'I'INli Carson, llwmmz, lhulmav, IJINWIDDIE, VVILSON, iX'iAl-IAN, NIILLER, Lma ' llomellcu, Huimows, lixcis, I-lcN'rz, Yoiz, G.,xlrl'H, lJoLL1aNs, GARDNER, BLAKEY, liwi':l.1,, lilSllUl', CP-ll'IAl'li, CA Mi-is12l,1., h'lA'l l'Hl'IVVS, l-li.-xmus, LEAKI3, GRINNELL, XNILKINS Smart, ii',Ii'I'liltSUN, l3URNli1'I', ADAMS, Cowuis, SNEED, '1'ARLEToN, COPLIN, Snomiv lilil-IRI-1Nll'l', l'lAo1cmAN, hlI'I'Cl4ll-Il.l., l.1-zwls, Xlvlillll, Gimnsl., Btu-'ou1m, LYDAY, CoNf:noN, GLIEASON, CA MI'lllil.l, 38 65 lJ1sQu15 DOINNY DISQUE. . . This club is coin- posed of boys who have played the required number of periods in one of the major sports. This fall, only four boys were in the club. Eleven more were taken in at the close of the football season, and two were added this spring for their work on the basketball team. The emblem of this club is a large orange C which is usually worn on a black sweater to carry out the scheme of l,.ane's colors-orange and black. Mr. llarry Martin, coach of most of Lane sports, who has been so popular with the boys on his teams, was chosen as sponsor of the organization this year. The C Club sponsors a dance each year, and supervises class softball, track, and held meets. This year it also sponsored an intramural basketball tournament to provide more experienced material for next year's team, and presented a trophy to the winning inter-class squad. 'lfhe l1o111e rooms provided themselves with officers and carried on their individual work and pl'Ogl'IllIlS as though they were clubs. Some rooms gave assemblies, some carried 011 work under a court trial system, some sponsored contests and debates, a11d some gave parties or wiener- roasts. All of tl1e home rooms took part very eagerly i11 some activity. The Hlillll reason for this change in the l1o111e room plan was to allow time for club meetings, staff meetings, and ZlSSCl'I1lQ3llCS during tl1e l'lO1'HC 1'0Ol'11 period and to give 1-111 fJpp0l'lIlll'lllfy for intensive study of spelling. The school day, instead of lasting from nine o'clock to two-thirty, was lengthened forty minutes, now begin- ning at eight-Hfty and closing at three o'elock. This new schedule provides for five one-hour class periods and EL thirty-minute home room period. The arrangement gives time within the school day for tield trips, laboratory periods, and extra-curricular activities which formerly had been carried on after school. Some classes took charge of the columns of school news in the city newspaper. A journalism class was organizecl for work on the Midzeay .S'z'I1dvI1f. An English class started a Liars' Club which held contests among its members. For extra-curricular work, one history class took up the study of safety in detail. They had a state patrolman to come and tell them about safety on the highways. Another history class made maps and collected many pictures to illustrate their work. A Civics class, while studving' business of today, made bank charts containing checks, drafts, etc. They also studied the history of corporations. One teaeher's class dramatized the economic stages of man from the hunting and fishing age to the machine age. Although this was the lirst year of the change for more inten- sive class-room work, a general improvement occurred, and those classes which changed their work showed how the class room activities can be made more interesting and instructive. 1938 CWLAIN I lx lvllli I.mn.xm', Y Z. Much progress was made during the year in the form of several new features and improvements in the old columns. The new columns included l'Viyylv.v and Cf'igglvs, a column containing humor and the .-lIim1.1'1i Colzmm, dealing with the why, when, and where of former Lane graduates. An old popular feature which was continued was the Cosmofmlilan C0'LH iL'I', a column containing' reviews of books and plays, and bits of news, written by James Quarles. Many interesting' and amusing answers were received when the entire school was invited to submit suggestions for the betterment of the paper. To help the stall? in writing its articles, one of the sponsors of the paper held a journalism class. This class was organized to teach the reporters the funda- Q mentals of writing and to improve their write-ups. As was customary, the writers for the paper received credit for all articles. ln the spring' term the system was changed slightly in that the paper was 5 l 'inted only once a month, whereas previously it was issued every three weeks. All the pupils of the school are invited to contribute, and a great variety of material is received by this means and by the additional efforts of the staff. Even though a great many of the con- tributions are worthy of publication, it is the aim of the staff to use only the material of highest quality and merit. The lirst period saw no scoring, but ended with the ball on Staunton's eleven-yard line in possession of Lane. Kardos carried the ball over in the beginning of the second quarter for the lirst score. The try for extra point failed. Then, after Lane carrried the ball again, Kardos passed to Barnett, who ran twenty-four yards to score. The try for extra point failed again, and the half ended with the score 12-O in favor of Lane. 'ln the third period, a long forward pass from l-lasset to Homer resulted in Lee High's only score. Lane added two more touchdowns on nice ground plays and collected one extra point. The scoring was completed when Lushbaugh intercepted a Staunton pass and went over the goal line. Lane bowed in defeat to George VVashington High of Alexandria in the next contest in a night game dedicating the latter's new stadium. Lane fumbled the opening kick-off. Alexandria recovered and scored on their second play. They converted the extra point. George NVashington High scored again at the beginning of the second period with a passing attack, but missed the try for extra point. The entire second half saw both teams lighting evenly, and neither was able to score. The game ended with the score: George Washington l-ligh 135 Lane High, 0. Regaining the running column, Lane trounced Culpeper by the score of 26-O. The Lane-ites took the opening kick-off and went down the field to score seven points before Culpeper had a chance at the ball. There was no scoring in the second quarter, though Culpeper, led by their brilliant quarterback, May, played their best in this period. A forty-live-yard drive in the third quarter netted Lane's second touchdown. In the fourth quarter, Barnett and Kai-dos each scored a touchdown and the game ended with Lane on top, 26-O. Lane's journey to Danville resulted in disaster for the Lane-ites. On a cloud- less day, the Danville team swamped the Charlottesville eleven by the appalling score of 34-6. Features of the game were the Danville drum and bugle corps and the large crowd. Lushbaugh obtained the only 'Lane score when he made a touch- down in the second quarter. TAN lc-Ronmvr E. L121-1 GA M li CED 138 0 84 CTLAIN On home ground again, Lane lost to Andrew Lewis High School of Salem in the third quarter when Hundle of the visitors, fell on a blocked punt which rolled over the goal for the only score. Lushbaugh attempted the punt after Lane got the ball on downs on her own one-yard line. Lane had one good scoring chance in this quarter but lost it on penalties. The rest of the game was fairly even and the tinal score was 2-O. l.ane's next loss was accomplished in the closing minute of play to Clifton Forge. The tirst three quarters were without special interest and saw no scoring. With only three minutes to play remaining, Disque passed to Smith, who ran fifty yards to score. l,ushbaugh's try for extra point failed. After the Mountaineers got the ball on the kick-off, they opened up an aerial attack that paid dividends. Murray passed to Craft to tie the score and then kicked the extra point to send the visitors into a 7-6 lead they never relinquished. Thomas jellierson next defeated Lane by a 25-9 count. In the second quarter, Thomas .letterson took the ball on her own Eve-yard line and with long gains soon reached the Lane goal. The Lane-ites frustrated the extra point attempt, and the lirst half ended with Richmond ahead, 6-O. Thomas jefferson then made two touchdowns in the third quarter and one in the fourth. Lane scored her nine points in the linal period with a touchdown, a conversion and a safety. ln the lirst quarter of the Glass-Lane game, Saunders, Lynchburg's fullback, intercepted a pass and went over for the only score of the game. The second half saw a lighting Lane eleven gain freely but lack sufficient punch to score. The game was marked by the muddy field and the running of Lane's substitute sophomore fullback, Carson Miller. The linal game on the Lane schedule was played with Hopewell at Scott Stadium. ln the iirst half, two passes, one from Pritchard to Phelps and one from Phelps to Pritchard, made the score 12-O for the Hopewell boys. Lane's only serious scoring threat came in the third quarter when the wearers of the Orange and lllack marched from their own twenty-five-yard line to Hopewell's ten. The results were, on the whole, disappointing. All players worked 'faithfully in the face of difiiculties, and Harry Martin proved to be a capable coach, but the Lane-ites lost a majority of their games. Lack of experienced reserves contributed in a large measure tu the dismal season. The wearers of the Oraufe and Black were several times disaiuuintecl lw 2, . . losing a game in the hnal minutes after they had been leading most uf the time. Lane's opponents so far out-classed her in many contests that the linal scores were humiliating. LINE-UP D. DISQUE ...... .......... .... I 7 orward I. NIACFARLAND. . . .,.. lforwcwd I. The Lane-ites opened their season under Coach Harry Martin with a win over Mclntyre High School, the county Champions. After the linal blow had been landed, tlte score was found to be 8-5 in favor of the home team. Next on the list were the very worthy opponents, the Crozet boxers. The visitors started off very well but succeeded only in holding Lane to a 6-6 tie, which was very encouraging, as Cfrozet had one of the strongest teams in the state. In their tinal match of the season, the Lane-ites fought with their hacks to the wall to emerge with a close 7M-6M victory over Meriwether Lewis. liilly Garth, the mainstay of the team, brought the crowd to their feet by dropping the captain of the visiting team twice in the 'lirst round to earn a T. The victorious squad might have gone on to light more, but further matches., could not be negotiated. e Thus Lane has ended another season of boxing undefeatec, ha ii ffibgpgl through last year with a win Zlllfl a tie. Although the girls had no gymnasium of their own, many participated. M rs. Alderman, the girls' coach, did her best to boost basketball. The starting line-up at the iirst of the season consisted of llinwiddie and Lang at guard, Disque at center, Glover and Marshall at side center, and Magann and Hawkins at the forward positions. This proved successful, so that the posi- tions remained unchanged. The basketeers cooperated and worked hard for the good of the team and not for individual honors. The team ohiers no alibis for its showing but looks forwarc,l to brighter St'ZlSU11S. Most of our regulars will depart this yearg nevertheless, next year's candidates expect to make a good showing. Intramural basketball was started in the spring, Many girls went out, and they all worked hard. Games, held at the City Armory, attracted many spectators. The school wishes to thank Coach Alderman and the team for its plucky showing. Despite the fact that it lost consistently, it, nevertheless, displayed good sportsmanship and plenty of spirit. VOILEYBALL The girls out for volleyball this year were organized into two teams, the Orange and the 'il3laclc, which played each other several times dur- ing the season. The Orange Team practiced Monday and Wednesday, while the Black Team held the Field on Tuesday and Thursday. Nancy Dinwiddie served as manager of vol- leyball and proved very able in that capacity. SOFTBALL The girls' softball team of Lane High started out very energetically this season. The games were sched- uled for recess, and many were played. The girls were divided into two teams, each having a manager who served under the head manager, Virginia Dudley. One team met the other team every possible day for over a month. 1938 96 CI-lAlN c MINOR SPORTS HIKING Under the leadership of Mrs. Alder- man, hiking' hecame a great pleasure and sport among the girls of Lane High. There were many supper hikes. This sport is steadily growing in popu- larity and is certain to be included in the girls' sport calendar from now on. TENNTS The girls' tennis team led by Jane Calhoun and Helen Burrows, winners ot' the senior and intermediate tennis tournament at Lane last year, C011- cluded its second successful season of competition. Those who were among the chief prospects for a regular berth on the team were Kathleen Adams, Elizabeth lluford, l'-lelen Burrows, jane Calhoun, Alice Glover, Mary Frances Jarman, Nina Johnson, Mary lffmily l'eterson and Ann VValker. TRACK The track team recently organized for girls had a very good season. The team, coached hy Mrs. Alderman, par- ticipated in the school Held day and met with great success. The returning veterans for next year's team make the outlook for the future very prom- ising as the majority of the regulars of this year's excellent team will he hack. l . i , . t 'Wg' . i Y :QM e i .Q J,-,. t ,,V',7V. ,V i ,Qu j.
