John Middleton Freeman, a popular Junior at Lane, is the artist of the following section. He has never continuously studied art, but his exceptional talent has placed his work far above the average. When Middleton was nine years of age, his charcoal drawing won honorable mention in Wanamaker's Art Contest for children in New York City. During President Roosevelt's campaign, he sketched a rough but clever political cartoon of this candidate. Without Middleton's knowledge, it was sent to Washington and in turn, he received a letter of acknowledgment from the Presi- dent. For the past year his interest has been chiefly in woodcuts, and two of them have been printed on the cover of the University of Virginia M agasine. At the present time, Middleton's work is being exhibited in Richmond, Charlottesville, and many other cities throughout the state. Recently he received another letter of appreciation from the well-known actor, William Gillette, for a drawing made of the actor in the guise of Sherlock Holmes. The staff of the Chain feels that such splendid talent in the school should be given recognition 5 and therefore, it presents to the readers the following woodcuts.
