IR ES.. H.. --to him who has qiven so manq lonq qears of service and to him who has won the admiration of the qouth of this citq, we lovinqlq dedicate this, the eighteenth link of the Chain. John Middleton Freeman, a popular Junior at Lane, is the artist of the following section. He has never continuously studied art, but his exceptional talent has placed his work far above the average. When Middleton was nine years of age, his charcoal drawing won honorable mention in Wanamaker's Art Contest for children in New York City. During President Roosevelt's campaign, he sketched a rough but clever political cartoon of this candidate. Without Middleton's knowledge, it was sent to Washington and in turn, he received a letter of acknowledgment from the Presi- dent. For the past year his interest has been chiefly in woodcuts, and two of them have been printed on the cover of the University of Virginia M agasine. At the present time, Middleton's work is being exhibited in Richmond, Charlottesville, and many other cities throughout the state. Recently he received another letter of appreciation from the well-known actor, William Gillette, for a drawing made of the actor in the guise of Sherlock Holmes. The staff of the Chain feels that such splendid talent in the school should be given recognition 5 and therefore, it presents to the readers the following woodcuts. AE' , y fu' Q I 1 :J ': ' , : I I, 4 f.L r vi Classes SEUIOR CLASS HISTORU Hello, Everybody ! This is the class historian of Lane High School broadcasting simultaneously from rooms 11, 12, and 13 a minute by minute report of the activities of the class of '36 through four exciting years in high school! Will we ever forget our first year at Lane? Goodness! How frightened we were, how insecure we felt, how young and insignificant! How meekly we obeyed the Sophomores and how reverently we gazed at passing Seniors! In a frenzy of excitement we elected our class officers: Douglas Fife, presidentg Wallace Trevil- lian, vice-president: .Timmy Matacia, secretary, Betty Lacy, treasurer. Mrs. McCue was unanimously elected sponsor. What fun the Freshmen Mixer was! We became acquainted and at the same time consumed great quantities of cakes and lemonade. The real fun in becoming a Soph was our right to flaunt our superior knowledge in the faces of the little inexperienced Freshmen. With quite an im- portant air we organized and placed ourselves under the leadership of john Hundley, president, ably assisted by Gene lslurrage, Douglas Fife, and Jimmy Matacia, with Mrs. Allan Raine to guide us. We had now learned the technique of getting out of embarrassing situations. Can you imagine how exciting it was to become juniors? Nearly Seniors! It was unbelievable what wonderful times we had! Lessons, club meetings, assem- blies, football and basketball games, class meetings, dances, study halls, and staff meetings filled our every hour. Our leaders this year were John l-lundley, Holt Souder, Marvin Sours, and Jimmy Matacia, with the popular Mr. J. N. G. Finley, as our sponsor. lt was quite exciting, our taking an active part in all activities and feeling that we were really one of the cogs in a great machine. Seniors! Seniors! Gracious! Those four long years seem like a happy dream! ls it possible that we were once frightened, scurrying Freshmen? Think- ing it over we sometimes wish we had it all to do over again. This our Senior year, has been the most priceless of all. The choosing of senior rings, the rummage sales and bridge parties to raise money for our publications, the dances and the most successful Senior Play, the hurrying and scurrying to get the annual out on time, and the memorable Washington trip sponsored by Miss Horwitz and Mr. Walker, will always be among our most vivid recollections. We chose to pilot the class of '36: Wallace Trevillian, Mary Cameron Buford, Peyton Harris, and Carl Deane. Our sponsors were the well-liked Miss Horwitz and Mr. Walker. As June approached what an immense amount of worrying about examinations and cram- ming we did before the climax-the Senior banquet, the Senior dance, the Senior picnic, and-graduation ! ! ! SUE BoLL1No, Class H istorian. 32 Seniors SAILS lN THE MIST I see through the mist a distant port Where the sun is always setting, VVhere the waters of life are dashed Against the World's eternal shore. l see the old and battered ships Come in without regretting, For they have sailed the sea of life And fain would sail no more. But now I see a ship of youth And beauty come to rest. A ship that carries the joys of life And sails the Hag of truth, That comes to port when just prepared ln life to do her best. The mist of the sea is thick, for the port Of death has claimed its youth. -ANN VAN DOREN 36 1N MEMORIAM Edith Uelora Bishop 1Q16H 1936 UOHTH Dreaming youth- Living and roaming by starlight In lands far away, Watching their bright castles shattered When night turns to dayg Laughing youth- Lingering there in the pathway of mirth Forgetting all care, Remembering only in the dawn Hope was born thereg Singing youth- Spirits are rising with springtime, Dormant so longg Voices are lifted to give to earth A fresh new song. -MARY WINSTON CROCKETT, '36 'l'RIf:vII.I.II-I N BUFIIRII HARRIS UIQ.-I NI: H IIRWITZ XY.fxI,KRR Class Offlcers W'AI.LACIs TRIZVILLIAN. ...... ........ Junior Class Historq Most people who say that the Junior Class is just a passing stepl' can hardly say that of us, the class of '37, for we have had quite an active finger in the school pie . Soon after registering we held a class meeting and elected as officers, Ann Fife, president, Barnard Dirzulaitis, vice-presidentg Sarah Buford, secretary, and Guilford Acker, treasurer. For sponsors we chose Miss Berrey and a popular new member of the faculty, Mr. Carter. Both of them have helped and encouraged us tremendously. Many of our members were represented not only in the scholastic line, such as Latin tournaments and public speaking, but in athletics as well. We even crashed the gossip column in the Midway Student. As the school was trying an experiment this year, that of each class giving a dance, we had ours on the twenty-second of November at Fry's Spring Studio. Everybody from the teachers down to the Junior-est Junior declared it a gala occasion. With fees wrung from cooperative Juniors we presented the school with a picture to be hung in the library. Looking back on an eventful Junior year, we can hardly wait until our one hundred and seventy-eight members start in with their Senior activities next year. SARAH BUFORD, Class H istorian. It was a big enough job filling the shoes of the former Sophomores, but in addition to that, we had to teach those green Freshmen where they belonged. Such ignorance! At our first meeting, which was in October, we elected Jane Calhoun, presi- dentg james Borden, vice-president, Beverly Hover, secretary, and Marjorie Mitchell, treasurer. To Mr. Gresham and Mrs. Ladd we gave the job of sponsor- ing us. After this we chose blue and gold fthe sign of our great wealthj for our class colors. Then we pulled a fast one on everybody. We gave a dance! We, the Sopho- mores, for the first time in the history of Lane, gave a good old hop around . Old Man Weather went back on us this December 13, but a large group turned out for the gala event, regardless of everything. Pleasure, however, wasn't the only thing we thought of. To prove this, we gave a very successful play, A Kiss for Cinderella , as our assembly program. The capable direction of Mrs. Finley and Miss Duke made a finished dramatic product from raw Sophomore material. Both the boys and the girls loyally upheld our class by going out for every sport with enthusiasm and determination. On the girls' teams the most out- standing Sophomore in every sport was Jeannette Seiler, who made the varsity team in each. Next year we intend to do even bigger and better things, for we will be able to stretch our toes more in Junior shoes. On registration day we were like scared rabbits waiting for our doom, but as time went on we became accustomed to our new school home and liked it more and more. The upper classmen helped us become acquainted with Lane and with other pupils, by giving a Freshman Mixer, where we had a very enjoyable evening. After becoming settled in our classes we held an organization meeting and elected class officers. We chose Reid Hundley, president, Elise Graves, vice- president, E. V. Stratton, secretary, and Billy Keadle, treasurer. We placed Mary Emily Peterson and Annie Lee Yowell on the Athletic Board. Our Execu- tive Committee for this year included Raymond Sandridge, Mark Congdon, Emily Massie, Guy McGee, Cecil Coleman, Wilson Huckstep, Velta Toms, and Caroyl Beddow. The early response made in turning in the class dues showed a spirit of cooperation. We made our first public appearance in the second assembly of the year by presenting two short plays, The Initiation and The Bench Warmers. Both of these performances were very warmly received. Since that time numerous other members of our class have participated in the Glee Club programs, and also in another play, The Treasure Hunt. In extra-curricular activities we were well represented. There are thirteen Freshmen in the Players Club, nineteen in the Glee Clubs, three in the Girls Hi-Y, eight in the Hayes Literary Society, two in the Girl Scouts, and one in the Boy Scouts. One member of the class was a reporter on the Midway Student staff, and forty-three took an active part in the various sports activities. Our class meetings featured talks by members and outside speakers. We added as special entertainment piano and vocal selections by members of the class, and several numbers by the high school orchestra. In February we welcomed into our midst a hundred new members and helped them adjust themselves to their life at Lane. This year we introduced a novel idea of making a scrap book of snapshots of our class, which will be kept for use in the annual of 1939. We think this will prove quite an additional interest to our link of the Chain. A The Council originated an entirely new ideaAthe setting up of a system by which pupils who participated in all kinds of activities would be rewarded. The plan was enthusiastically received and a great number of pupils were presented with merit pins early in May. ln the late spring the organization sent delegates to the Student Council Convention at llortsmouth, Virginia. They reported it was especially interesting to find out how other school governments sponsored and carried out their various activities. Other activities included committees appointed to work out mam' minor projects. chief among them being' the traffic and lunch room difficulties. The committees introduced workable plans which have been used with some success. During' the past year the Student Council operated efficiently under the sponsorship of Miss llerrey, Miss Elgar, and Nr. VX'allcer. Given full coopera- tion, it should continue to improve from year to year. 79 BOLJS' TWDDY GLOVER ..... JOHN HLTNDLPIY ... GLOVER OFFICERS MARVIN SOURS ...... VVe Conducted each meeting strictly according to lx'oI2vrf'.v lx'ult',v of Order. Of eourse, at times someone became so excited that he interrupted the meeting, but he was sternly put in his place by a sonorous, The gentleman is out of order from the l'resident,s chair. This year we contributed to the school's literary team a girl reader, lXlargaret Shaffer, a speller, Louise liwellg Zlllil a public speaker, John Hundley. The debat- ing team had two members from the society, Arthur Tuthill and Harry Michael. Our assembly production, Ullargains ln Cathay, featuring l at Tlolongaro, Sarah Buford and -lohn Hundley, was said to be one of the best of the year. To enliven our programs we have included talented pupils outside the society. Un various occasions members of the faculty have been invited to speak. This has broadened our programs and we hope it will be continued next year. 85 HAH ES CHARLES BATCHELDER. . . EDITH HEERMANCPI .... BATCHELDER OFFICERS ANN VAN DOREN. .. BETTY YOE. . . Haqc-is Literarq Societq The lluyes l.iterary Society is another organization at l.ane lligh School which has won for itself recognition. lt was started in 1925 with the aid of one ot' l.ane's most popular teachers, lllr. ll. ll. Xyallcer. Soine of its members have achieved notable honors i11 various contests in the school and in outside coin- petition. At the opening ot' school the veteran ineinbers of the society felt a distinct need for reorganizing the club and under the guidance of its two sponsors, Mr. Richard Meade and Mr. Foster tireshznn, this has been ettectively done. A division of the society into two groups, which vie for all honors, has been a tremendous help :ind has attorded much aznuseinent. The plan was that all offenses, in the nature of failure to attend meetings and to olmserve parliznnentary rules of order, would count against the side committing them. lt was further decided that the losing side would treat the winners to a banquet or ll picnic. Due to the general success of the vigorous reorganization campaign, members of the llayes feel that next year will he El gala year in llayes history. 87 BOUS' OLEE CLIII5 MATACIA OFFICERS JAMES IWATACIA .... ........... Lawrence Snoddy directed the action in true minstrel style, while the proverbial, cork-faced end-,men came back with snappy jokes and songs. The aim of the lloys' filee Club this year has been to revive the glory of the great composers and to gain a knowledge of the better semi-elassies. During the latter part of the term the boys under the sponsorship of Mrs. Leitch and M r. lieitz received training in the singing of part songs. ESMOND ROBERT RTEDEL Miss VIRGINIA BOLEN Our Players Club started off with a bang this year by initiating a new system of entertainment. We have accomplished our aim-the developing of the dramatic ability of our members by having them present well-known one-act plays at each meeting. Those especially interested in directing were given the opportunity to direct the plays. This system has enabled our more inexperienced members to gain confidence over the footlights. We have about forty members, all of whom are participants in some activity of the club. A stringent entrance examination recently set up admits only the best to membership. In midwinter we presented for the entertainment of the school, the annual Players Club production, Patsy Strings Along . Lane High School has, for several years, entered a play in the Virginia Liter- ary and Athletic Contest at the University. Until 1936, we sponsored only one play in the annual contest at the school. This year, however, to provide more competition, we were divided into two groups, each one presenting a play. The plays, Grandfather's Chairn, and The Fourth Mrs. Phillips , were under the direction of our sponsors, Miss Virginia Bolen and Mr. E. R. Riedel, respectively. Altogether, under the supervision of the board of directors and our genial president, Miss Neal Ely, we hope we have made the Players Club a better organi- zation this year. 92 Productions of the Pldqc-:rs Club PATSY STRINGS ALONG GRANDFATHER'S CHAIR Q l'.11lm'x'm-ml 1110119-.-KCI l'l:1ylm1- tul Hclul '11 thc L1I1lYK'I'Sl1V ui irginizd ' - 5fSi3V4' ' 1 THE FOURTH MRS. That paper was quite unlike the high school newspaper which today bears the same name, but from that small beginning the Midway Student has risen to a place of prominence among the activities of Lane. Several years after its appearance, the sheet was enlarged from the original three-column to a four-column size. Even after the name of the school was changed from Midway High School to Lane High School, the paper kept its original title. No real honors were won by the Midway Student until 1928 in which year the paper was widened by one Column. It was then that this bi-weekly publication was judged by the Virginia Literary and Athletic League as the best paper pub- lished by class B schools. With the exception of the year 1932 it held that honor continuously until 1934. In that year the new method of make-up and headline writing had been introduced and a new kind of type for news stories as well as headlines was featured. When Lane's enrollment in 1934 moved the school into the state class A division, the five-column size of the paper became the object of criticism from the Virginia League judges. So at the beginning of the current school year, the paper was enlarged to the class A standard size of six columns and still another type for headlines was used. The paper won its most recent award when it received second class rating from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The Midway Student has held that honor, with the exception of 1932, every year that entries have been sent to the National Press Contest. Having completed its flfteenth year of continuous publication the Midway Student has won for itself a reputation as an outstanding state high school news- paper and a definite niche in the school life of Lane. 108 U r D il Athletics 1935-36 Pl-1'I'lIi Iilmolis .. . . II Darsitq Football lfaeed with the llereulean task of rebuilding a team to withstand a seven- game onslaught was no easy joh, hut Coach Dial, with only five veterans available managed to garner four victories out of a tough sehedule. Newport News, Dan- ville, Salem, and lNleliinley Tech were listed among the victims. Although the Orange Tide of '35 lacked the weight and precision of the '3-l eomlmine, it displayed the same light and spirit so eharaeteristie of l.ane teams. lts tirst game of the season was played in Newport News against the high school ot' that city. and the odds greatly favored the coastal team. However, the Orange and lllaek upset interhigh predictions when it took the hall on the kick-oft and marehed up the held for the only score of the tight. Droopy Deane plunged through the line for the touchdown and Dan Taylor added the extra point. The following week the Ironmen took George Xkasliington High of Dan- ville over the coals to the tune of lf!-0. l.ane made l-l lirst downs to Danville's lll. The Deane hrothers gave a good exhibition of running and passing, while Harris hloeked to perfection. ln the line Southall, llarnes. and Taylor were outstanding. This was the first home game and was one of the hardest fought contests of the season. The Salem squad came over with the noble intention of bettering last year's score of 6-6. However, Lane's fighting forewall and heady backtield proved to be too strong a combination to crack. The final score was 12-0. The Roanoke Magicians cast a spell on the Lanemen and took the Home Coming Day game with a score of 7-6. The game was a nerve-cracking affair with everyone playing topnotch ball. Brooks was at his best in this contest, and his mate, Taylor, was the star linesman. Wood and Barnes kept up their good work and Acker performed faultlessly in the pivot position. The ends, Southall and Disque, worked together and kept the punts well covered. Lane's score came in the final quarter following Bobby Deane's magnificent fifty-yard sprint. Droopy snagged a short pass from Carl Deane for the touchdown. I-larris's try for the extra point was wide by feet. The Lane contingent next journeyed down to Richmond and were taken for a ride to the doleful tune of 25-6 by the powerful Thomas jefferson Eleven that heaved passes until the Lanemen were groggy. This was one of the contests in which the linesmen did more spectacular work than the backfield. 118 Charlottesville's team was next entertained in Lynchburg by Glass High. The field was a sea of mud which greatly hindered Lane's powerful running attack. The fortunes of the day favored the Glass Eleven with six points and completely ignored the Lanemen. The Deane brothers were kept well covered, but Harris Y cracked the burly Glass line for substantial gains. A long pass from Carl Deane tow Hamm brought a cheer from the drenched spectators, but after a series of first downs that placed the team in scoring position, the threat Uiizzed out on the one- yard line. Playing unparalleled ball, Lane climaxed the season with a well-earned 6-0 victory over Tech High School of Washington, D. C. Despite a soggy turf, the Orange Tide gained almost at will. Bob Deane rifled a short pass to his brother, Carl, who eluded several would-be tacklers for the only score of the game in the second stanza. The local combine again threatened to push over a tally, but a fumble intervened to squelch the threat. Bob Deane was at his best smacking the Tech line for repeated gains. At the conclusion of the season the lettermen unanimously elected Carl and Robert Deane Co-Captains. Certainly this was a wise choice, as both had con- tributed much to the success of football teams at Lane. H??'5f ?V ?i7 Junior Football This year junior football did not fare as well as in previous seasons 3 never- theless, Coach Taylor developed two fighting elevens that furnished ample oppo- sition. Because of the large squad it was necessary to divide it into two groups, the 110 and the 125-pound elevens. The former was victorious in two of three contests, while the latter failed to score a win. 110 POUNDS The Midgets opened their season with a 7-0 win over Woodberry on the latter's field. Both teams were evenly matched and fought through three scoreless periods. Lane's score came in the final moments of play, following a 35-yard drive. Dirzulaitis scored the touchdown and Johnson converted. A. M. A. was the Pygmies' next victim, going down to the tune of 32-6. The locals gained almost at will, and displayed a far superior brand of ball. The Keydets lone score came in the fourth quarter on an intercepted lateral. In the final game of the season the orange-jerseyed Midgets dropped a hard fought game to the tricky Miller School Eleven by a 7-0 decision. The Millerites pushed over their lone tally in the second quarter. Although the Midgets threat- ened several times, they were unable to score. 125 POUNDS The Juniors opened their season by bowing to an experienced A. M. A. eleven, 20-2. Despite the big score the Lanemen threatened several times but lacked the scoring punch. Clay Breeden and Bobby Carter were outstanding for Lane. Woodberry was the juniors' next conqueror, whipping the locals, 13-0. The game was played in a drizzling rain which naturally made both elevens resort to running attacks. Both of Woodberry's touchdowns came in the last half, the first on a long drive and the final score as a result of Jones' fumble. Houff and Sankey Hall turned in stellar performances for the Lane team. A band of disabled but determined Juniors encountered Miller School in their last game on November 13, and lost, 12-0. Although outclassed from the begin- ning, Coach Taylor's charges put up a plucky fight against overwhelming odds. The entire team played great ball and this contest was easily the best of the season. 121 SIPPLEY fC0acl11, BENDER fManagrrjV, Rmnm. fDiTCL'f0f2 GIANOKOS, TUTHILL, IJISQUE DIRZIII.AI1'IS, BROOKS, IDEANF, GIANOKOS Basketball FRED BENDER ..... ................. .... fl I anagw' FRANK SIPPLEY ..... ............., ..... The task of lifting the basketeers out the mire was laid on the capable shoulders of Frank Sippley, a Cavalier court star of several years back. Coach Sippley, like previous mentors, had to contend with the same old problems: inexperienced material, an over-ambitious schedule, and inadequate practicing facilities. Prospects were above the average in early January and Coach Sippley was able to patch together a fairly respectable aggregation. The starting quint was composed of Don Disque and Truman Southall in the forward berths, Tuthill in the pivot position, and Stumpy Deane and Bubba Barnes in the qdard posts. Though this team harbored no championship dreaihs, nevertheless it showed pos- sibilities. An unexpected enemy disguised as mid-term examinations riddled the ranks of two stars, Southall and Barnes-W-the former received a diploma, and the latter encountered scholastic difficulties. Again Sippley was forced to revamp his charges, and the result was a team that proved to be much easier for its opponents. The team offers no alibis for its embarrassing showing. It is looking forward to brighter seasons. Few regulars will depart and the experience gained this year will help us materially in '37, There is also a possibility that the school board will see tit to erect a gymnasium. In closing it is only fair to thank Coach Sippley and the team for its plucky showing. Despite the fact that it lost consistently, it, nevertheless, displayed good sportsmanship and plenty of spirit. 123 Qirls' Sports LANE SPORTS' C'l.L'l3 Rlc'HAluws, Svicick :XIX-XMS, S'lmxHi,, Vxifkllli volley-ball, tennis, hiking, or base- . ball. The members of the club now are: jane Adams. Helen Stahl, .lean Spicer, llorothy Richards, and Mary VVade. Under the co-sponsorship of Miss lrene Garrison and Mrs. blames Leitch, whose helpful guid- ance has aroused a keener interest in the games, the 1935-36 term in y girls' athletics was unusually suc- i cessful. ln October all the girls participating in sports elected an athletic council to help the sponsors plan the program for the following year. Those on the council are: Freshmen: Elisabeth Buford, An- nie I.ee Yowellg Sophomores: .leanettc Seiler, Nannie Quick: Juniors: Helen Stahl, Helen lfarlyg Seniors: lidith Marshall. jane Adams. 124 A year ago, under the sponsor- ship of Mrs. James Leitch. a mono- gram club for girls was organized. The members of this l.ane Sports' Club represent those who have met the necessary requirements in athletic achievement and have demonstrated truc sportsmanship. Membership is difficult to attain and a minimum of twenty points is specified. Girls receive points for each varsity team they make, for regular attendance at practices, for the number of points hiked, bicycled or skated, and for tourn- aments. Due to the variety of ath- letic activities at Lane during the 1935-36 term, the aspirants for membership in the club have ample opportunity for taking part in their choice sport-basketball, soccer, 'ATH l.li'I'l L' CO1 'Ncl I. l3l'FtlRD, SEILI-IR, Yowicla, .-Xiuxis, KlARSH.'Xl,l., l?.uu.v, S'r.xHi, L Gllmme, KQIADVICR, lluwrn, XYANDENIKIZIUG, H.-xwxms, Svlvlak Hxulelsnx fcitltlfllj, H,xR1,.-xN, 5 .-un., I-.,xlu,Y, Ymxlu-Lxxuaw., Lwn,l-plxmx, LIiI'l'C'H lfmxrlzj Wlxlwi, F.uz1.v, .-Xs uw, NI,xRsn.xI.L, Snell.:-lu, Sxwru, Am :vis fwwgf-M Basketball I'uY1.1.ls ICARLY ........ . . .llfzmlyrr Miss IRI-:NH GARRISON . . . .Coczflzvs lXlRs.,lA1xIHs I,r:l'rc'H,.IR. 1936 RECORD jzm. Farmvillc . . 125 Basketball-' Basketball, played in the City Arm- ory, is the chief winter sport of Lane's girl athletes. In spite of the inconvenience of not having a gym- nasium of their own, the girl basket- eers went out enthusiastically in large numbers for the sport. Coach classes were not held this year as in previous years. The squad was divided into four teams which held tournaments among themselves. These teams and their captains were: Edith Marshall's Dinky g Fay Purvis' Top Hat g Jane Adams' Orange and Black Streaksng and Margaret King's Sheiks . After several hotly con- tested games, Jane Adams' Orange and Black Streaks were declared winners of the tournament, and this team was given a party by the three losing teams. When the varsity squad was chos- en, practice was set about in dead earnest, and the form of the Lane Sextet was much improved by fre- quent scrimmages with St. Anne's and Ix Silk Mills teams. Although Lane's charges tasted defeat 'fre- quently, they possessed a clever pass- ing and accurate shooting team that ranked as one of the best in the state. The sextet got off to a flying start by thoroughly trouncing the Har- risonburg girls, 52-26. Its speed and passing were very instrumental in this victory. The local team made a comeback in their third game, easily defeating Shenandoah, 34-13. The Laneites held the leading score throughout the en- tire game. In one of the closest games of the season, the sextet lost to Waynes- Basketball boro with an outcome of 33-31. Hard fought and quick moving, the gamc looked as if it would end in a tie. In almost the last second of play, however, the Waynesboro forward sank the fatal goal and the whistle blew on a well-earned victory for Vtfaynesboro. In a later return game played in the Woodrow Wilson Gym at Waynesboro, the Lane girls showed what spirit they had, when, in a fast moving game in which the lead changed several times, they overcame the erstwhile visitors to the score of 24-17. In a second encounter with Har- risonburg the order was reversed and the local contingent bowed to Harrisonburg whom previously it had easily defeated, Harrisonburg, ac- customed to her own gym and with revenge as her motive, showed re- newed hope and won with a score of 23-21. The game was rather slow on account of fumbling on both sides. The Lane girls had a chance to re- deem themselves when they met Farmville again on home ground. They took advantage of this and the game ended in a victory for the Laneites, 15-12. This game was the final one for four girls: Jane Adams, Edith Marshall, jane Smith, and Mary VVade. These girls have all been leaders in athletics at Lane. Their absence next year will be very keenly felt. Although the basketcers were de- feated several times, their brand of ball was far superior to that of last year. The return of many seasoned veterans should make '37 a banner year.
