Dedication Dr. Hugh Compton Ftiddleberger Since we, the class of 1981, first came to Landon, the man who has most influenced the Landon community has been Mr. Riddleberger. Under his leadership, the school has seen, among his many accomplishments, the completion of the Wallace Wing and the Alumni Sports Center. During the building of these two facilities, lvlr. Fliddleberger demonstrated his tremendous enthusiasm to serve the needs of education. This enthusiasm, with the demands he has placed on himself, has resulted in the improvement of the Landon community. However, we also realize Mr. Ftiddleberger's influence on us. Although he believes strongly in his principles, he remains willing to change. Because of his open mind, he is always willing to listen. He does not put up with nonsense. His no nonsense approach has led him to de- mand that we strive past our limits. Still, he remains understanding of our failures. We have learned, by his prodding, to fulfill our potential. lt is because of these qualities and their influence on the school and ourselves that we dedicate the 1981 Brown and White to lvlr. Riddleberger. . , .,. .,Qf+,f AQ 8 F' .,L, V HI bn wg- 'IQ' 5 5 ' ll? X - My mi ,,,,, ff 1 4 A 'U' 4 . nf ,QQ L W ,. K B A . 9 an 'Sf 9 2 1 3 X 5 . 5 A I 'W 5 1 3 13 Y' 'Mn 44 '-Q. Certain students immediately took titles that would stick with them throughout their years at Landon. Drew Hyde was labeled the class clown when, in front of the entire class, he opened a closet door to reveal Mrs. Thompson changing her dress. Stewart Cobb, along with being elected the king of clip-on neckties, was recognized as the class brain. He achieved this honor as a result of his intense interest in space, where along with the local Radio Shack, Stew spent most of his time. Many family legacies, such as the Kochs and the Buckinghams, were represented in this class for the third and fourth times in the school's history. lt was these students who, for their first five years at Landon, would be called only by their brothers' names. Everybody thought Landon Banfield owned the school. The Shrimp Bowl ended in a 0-O tie, but we were consoled when our teacher told us it was a moral victory since the 66'ers were older and presumably more experienced. In our fourth grade year, we picked up Gor- don Gooch, a Texas-born boy whose Texas drawl was to slowly but surely fade away by his senior year. Greg Asbed was encased in a cast that went from his chest to his knees as a result of a football injury. Just about everyone in the class wondered how Greg took care of certain day-to-day activities. Mike Oliphant was also a new addition. JoIlie Ollie always seemed to have an uncontrollable urge to smile. As we entered our fifth grade year, more new-comers were added. Billy Beef Adkins was known as the strongest kid in the fifth grade tand the sixth, and the seventh, and the eighth as welll . Corey Burr was the second pre- piest thing Landon had ever seen fthe first being his brother Shept, and no one could believe that Brooks Brothers made canary yel- low pants in a 23 inch waist. The fifth grade year will never be forgotten for it was in this year that Tusharco Landon a never-ending source of excitement, a fact to which the whole Upper School body would attest at many a school meeting. Each year, as we returned, we noticed that our classrooms from the previous year had been newly carpeted and furnished. We were always a year ahead of the renovation. Perhaps it was this neglect and injustice which nurtured the frustration for our sixth grade gang wars. More than once Mr. Ricker would raid the bathroom only to find Nick Wiel and company dunking someone's head in the sink. Each of the class had their own badges worn underneath the lapels just in case a classmate didn't recognize you. It was in sixth grade that we lost Drew Hyde to St. Albans, a loss that would prove menacing in many Landon-St. Albans athletic contests to come. SORKIN Steve Sorkin is hereby an honorary member of the class of 1981. Though he was only at Landon three years, he helped our class, as individuals, and as a group, more than anyone else. Whether it was by giving extra help in math, or just being there to listen, his door was always open. No problem was too small, too large, or too per- sonal for Steve. Even though he was on an exchange during our crucial senior year, he will always be an in- tegral part of the class of '81. Wherever you may be, Steve, thank you. Many substantial additions were made to our class. Miles Ryan joined us, seemingly determined to go to Har- vard the did end up getting an early acceptance to the schoolj. There's got to be a smartest guy in every class, and Miles enjoyed this title each of his years at Landon. But Miles wasn't only reserved to academics. Often he was the big play man at P.E. touch football, devising calculus-like plays which probably could have stumped even Coach Davis and his awesome defense. When it came to sports, there was, and still is, no one more well-versed than Steve Gellman. Chabo . There was not any need to read the sports section on Monday morningsg Steve could easily give a more complete rundown of the N.F.L. The seventh grade opened the class up to a new aspect of life in the opposite sex. The dances were indeed eventful. No one will forget Nick Weil's two- week suspension for bringing a cigar tube full of Jack Daniels. By the time our eighth grade year arrived, our class was on its way to the New Wallace Wing exhibiting similar delinquent behavior. Little Flower dances were the place to be on Friday nights. Mike Daly could be heard humming the familiar Hawaii-Five-O theme as he graded Algebra testsg Mrs. Georgia's art class was a course in which the students' integrity was challenged fand lostl. Marco Odiaga was Mrs. Geprigia's own private answering service f Hey Gla- dys, its's Scudderl l . Our class had left a bad taste in the mouth of the Middle School administration, and the Upper School faculty was a bit wary. After the first month, our class was labeled the worst to go through Landon and most of the class was proud of it. No one knew what to do with this disjointed class. Finally, Landon held the Spring Cleaning of '78 in which over a third of the class was lost, some leaving by their own accord and others getting the boot. Eric Vesper was last seen flying around Whitman in a silver suit and a cape with a big V on his chest. Once tenth grade came the class list would stay almost the same. Our class was finally stabilized. Chuck Babyface Meade came back to school with a lot to tell. Seems Chuck had an eighteen-wheeler full of contraband, with a girl named Cheryl in the passenger seat, when some South Carolina State Troopers pulled him over and sold him a Corvette f'??'?j . Chuck promptly shot them. The members of the Assasins , Phil Messer, Josh Shroomua Eagle, Greg Asbed, George Van Houtven, Steve Gell- man, and Chris Carroll, made Cheech and Chong look like lightweights, while the opposing Brew Crew consisting of Mark Peterson, Chris Caskin, Tyler West, Jimmy Gilbert, and Greg Mott lOh no! not our presidentlj made Talbert's their official clubhouse. Walker Simpson outdid all of them by being an active member of both cliques. Others in our class excelled at other things, though. Mathias Bostrom spent most of his time chewing up the competition in National swim events. Bill Rowe was a master at just about every racquet sport known to man. Eric Morrison licked everyone at the shooting range lincluding Mr. Longl even at the National level. Sutton Stern and Dave Snyder were the best soccer players Landon r . . f sf' ...cw-aww Ice Man Andrews proved himself as he gave Landon a one point victory over our friends at Georgetown Prep by sinking two free throws with no time left. Steve Tseckares was your basic all- American fwhat a manly . While these people ex- celled, others accelled. At the top of the list is Beef and his Z-28. That boy had the fastest car on campus, and he'd smoke 'em up every once in a while just so no one would forget. Antonio Ortiz drove a RX-7, but that was only until his new Scirocco was delivered. Bob Kim tooled around in a 924 jsome hot shotj , while big Peter Cladouhos went through a pair of Supras like they were going out of style. But by far, the most memorable car will be Chris Carroll's 240-Z. This incredible machine was out of commission for at least two out of five days a week. Those who join- ed Chris' Part of the Week Club placed bets on which part would fall out next. lf nothing did, Chris would keep the money. tHe was S1200 in debt by the end of the year! . While Chris was having trou- ble maintaining his car, others were having trouble driving their cars. Mike Amitay had the most ac- cidents in the shortest time, while Tyler West had the worst accidents in the most number of cars. Greg Asbed tried to run down a telephone pole, but instead, won the David Kovar look-a-like con- test for that week. Bob Kim really got Shanghaied when he walked out of a party only to find his car bashed. Walker Simpson displayed the newest in late night mobile gardening techniques. Chris Caskin took on a cement truck and got beaten fit was probably Walker driving one of Dad's trucksj. Not only were people getting in accidents, some were getting arrested, that's right, arrested, and thrown in jail! George Van Houtven was hauled in for just sitting in the Georgetown Square parking lot minding his own business jwoaj l Walker Simpson was nabbed for drinking in public at Roy's. Landon Banfield was sent up the river for - get this - littering! You could do better than that, Doon! And finally, Mr. Caskin and Mr. Burr were arrested on charges of disturbing the peace jso what else is newj. They should have sent Caskin to had ever seen. They led their teamto an IAC champi- onship. Jaye Lorton Fieformatory and Burr to a de- prepping institute in Cleveland. Our class, like others, was somewhat involved in activities. Boisterous Andy Kerr headed up the Community Service Program with a gung-ho attitude exemplified by a grand total of three community service announcements. Jeff Peiken decided to hold a Prometheus contest for the rest of his life. He still only has two peoms lwhich he wrote himselfl, so get those entries into Jeff soon. Eric Hough commandeered the Library Committee, establishing marshal law and capital punishment for any dissidents caught in the library. The blood drive was organized by Greg Smith and Tom Buckingham. They doubled the number of blood units this year frumour has it they took half of it from Buck thoughl. Mike ZOFiO Ament and Oliver Zero John were big men on the Dance Committee and fencing team. Riaz Karamali and Mike Hammer were the chess fanatics in our class. In class, Q43 Ayme e Hasheifm proved to be a math whiz. Hash , as he was called, was so far ahead of everyone that he had time to screw around in Mr. Johnson's class, a class where everyone con- centrated on their work. fwell, maybe not everyonel . While everyone else considered Mrs. Bradshaw's class extremely boring, Charlie Byrd found her very stimulating. John Hemenway was late three to four days a week on the average. When asked by Mr. Davis why he was two minutes late, he's reply My car broke down or My alarm didn't go off. Fieal imaginative Ernie. Tyler West was the class of 81's Anne Landers. With his entourage of Holton follow- ers, Tyler managed to have a hand in everyone's bus- iness. f5l Mike Amitay kept the class laughing hard at his unusual sense of humor. Spike's antics were bizarre to say the least, and no school meeting was safe. Jerry Palmer could deal on a computer better than anyone lmaybe even TJl. Horseracing almost became a Landon sport. Boris Easy Rider Sta- rosta, when he wans't in the Stars, was a moped gang leader in Bethesda. James Yeganeh was our class hostage and chief anti-Ayatollah demonstrator. He could often be found parading in front of Mr. Par- ker's office with a sign reading Free Me on his back. Frank Fioller, Steve Pappas and Greg Mott were the only ones to be considered adept at pool. Q33 Frank Ftoller would usually use the laugh-your- opponent-under-the-table'' strategy. Jeff Jones Ted Willard was John Ander- son's exclusive Landon P.Fi. man. Tough luck, Ted. We'll look for you in '84. Q25 Andy Porter and Mike Stern were pioneers in establishing a Yidish cuisine in the Landon lunchroom by bringing in their own mat- zah and selling it to curious gentiles. John Hunt was Landon's answer to the British invasion. When John Lennon was killed, John began signing all his papers as Ringo Hunt. lwatch out Fiingol Saul Hoppenstein won the Elvis Hairdo contest. The judges felt Saul's voice bore an uncanny resemblance to the King's, this being the deciding factor. ftl John Tegaris developed a sudden, uncontrollable craving for German food his last year at Landon. John also could never manage to find the restroom keys at the local Exxon. Fill it with unleaded, please. Chris Caris was the only Landon student with the ability to actu- ally end up making money on a date. Incredible!! Francis Szele propagated a whole mess of plants in the greenhouse and took care of all the different kinds of weeds that could alter Dr. Hayward's per- ception of his plants. Tom Friedman was a varsity player for both soccer and football. Jay Legg was big on fighting. Who will forget Marco Odiagas' party when Jay put up a valiant, but futile stand against the McLean High football team. Brook Van Der Linden seemed to have better luck when he took on the same set of goons two months later. . . at poker, that is. Sucking on a big cee-gar, Ace Up the Sleeve Van Der Linden walked for ranl from the table with a sizeable sum of money, their money. Hughes Girard was our AFS student for the year. He once asked Caskin how to ask the Librarian for a pencil. When Hughes recited what he was told, he was given a green slip and weeks suspension from the library. Strange, these Americans. Well, that's the Class of 1981. Sixty-five alto- gether. For some its been a couple of years, for oth- ers, the better part of their lives. Some had a rough time, others not so rough. But it was a good time for all. Where will they all go? lf the past record is any indication, God help us all. Q39 Monte Koch spent more of his time catching rays and listening to the Beachboys than he did studying. His grades reflected this West Coast attitude. ill lt was during our senior year that Greg Mott became a seafood lover. He could often be found smothering himself in aquatic delicacies on the steps of the Family Fish House fMmm, Mmm, goodll. C27 Jim Sheister Gilbert could always be counted on for lighters and other paraphernalia, although none of them were his. Despite an early college acceptance, Poindexter Gilbert spent many a weekend night hit- ting the books. flightlyl ,4J Jim Gilbert, Walker Simpson, Mike Amitay and Monte Koch will never forget 6th period Geology class lwhen they were therel. The humor produced in class never affected their work, for whenever they took a test, they did very well. Q55 Monday mornings were gossip time, and Petey could always be counted on to deny accusations of his various calamities of the past weekend. With all the denials, however, the hard facts remained iw: Rv ,, 8 T2 iii if ' , -1-:' , , 155, ,Q sf-I was -if ' Ln 5' fi Q, L. f- SP Q V gf V as A Q1 ,asf , ' I , ' if: ma? The starting defensive unit had graduated, along with most of the offensive line. With only 10 veterans returning, the prospects did not look good. There was, however, an undefeated and unscored upon J.V. team to draw from, as well as some exceptional sophomore talent. So, the seniors, juniors, and soph- omores were blended, despite the lack of experi- ence, the horrendous disorganization of an unfin- ished gym, and, as always, the sweltering late August weather. The coaches put the pieces together while Eric Hough and the managers some- how delivered all that was needed. The weather was simply endured. By the Wooton scrimmage, the offense had some semblance of order, and what the defense lacked in skill, it made up for in intensity. This was to be the story of the season. ln the Wooton scrimmage, the offense ran extremely well for having had only one week of prac- tice. The new offense gained confidence in itself, while the defense did an outstanding job of shutting down the Wooton attack. The defense had this same kind of performance throughout the season, despite its performance at Woodberry Forest. At Woodberry, the many mistakes that were made by both units were learned from, and not dwelt upon. George Mason: The Bears opened their 1980 sea- son against George Mason, a team Landon had not played. The offense proved itself by scoring once in each half, with Mark Peterson getting an Honorable Mention for his play at offensive back. The defense had an outstanding game, giving up only 37 total yards and no points. This was to be the first of 5 shutouts for the defense. 1, - f i A.. if f ,as J 1 . - K 3 X K K W -..-.J .. . . .. so K my ' A .. .,.. V . W, ix , Q we , . After a scoreless first half, the Eagles drew first blood early in the second. The Bears were not to be denied, however, scoring twice in the fourth quarter to win 15-8. Defense was again key to this game, as shown by Mark Mickum's Honorable Mention in the Star for his consistent play at linebacker. Georgetown Prep: Renewing the rivalry of 10 years past, Landon hosted the Little Hoyas, in what some called The Game of the Year. Down 6-0 at half- time, the Bears scored early in the second half on a Johnston reception. John Gilbert kicked the extra point to give Landon the edge. Thanks to strong defensive play, this lead was held for the rest of the game. Scott Johnston received the Star's Player of the Week for his play at defensive back. St. Stephens: ln this game, Landon hosted the Saints under miserable conditions. Turnovers were 5.44 the key to this game: the Bears capitalized on St. Stephens mistakes to win 13-7. And again, the Lan- don defense shut down the St. Stephens attack in the fourth quarter, with Mark Mickum again receiving Honorable Mention for his effort at linebacker. Mercersberg: Traveling the next week to Pennsyl- vania, Landon met a much improved Mercersberg team. After an uninspired first half, the Bears again made a second half stand, offensively and defen- sively. The final score: 14-0. Sidwell: Back in D.C., Landon recovered its form in time to spoil Sidwell's homecoming. Both units con- tributed to the 34-O shutout. This win gave Landon a 6-0 record. The Bears were not to go undefeated, however. Bullis: Again under miserable conditions, the Bears played away. The Landon play reflected these condi- tions, as Bullis beat Landon for the second year in a row. This 21-7 loss destroyed the Bear hopes of an undefeated season. ii Episcopal: Traveling away once again, the Bears realized they must win to stayin the I.A.C. race. With four goalline stands, the defense maintained the 8-0 lead established by the offense. This was the defen- se's fourth shut out. St. Albans: On Homecoming Day, as many had predicted, the I.A.C. titte was on the line. It was thought that St. Alban's big play offense might give them the edge. The Bulldogs never really threat- ened, however, as the Bears dominated the entire game. A Peterson touchdown and Caskin field goal gave Landon the 10-0 victory. The defense also recorded its fifth shutout, and for his exceptional play as linebacker, Rick Buckingham was the Star's Player of the Week. The St. Albans victory gave Landon half the I.A.C. title, which was more than anyone had expected dur- ing pre-season. This Co-Championship team, which produced 7 ALL I.A.C. players, did not do this alone. Much credit must go to the managers, for the time and effort they gave in keeping the team supplied with what was needed. Thanks should also go to the fans, for their continual support from the heat of Gon- zaga to the cold of Bullis. And most of all, the coaches should be remembered. Without their sup- port and patience, the team could not have accom- plished what it did: an 8-1 season. The team set many records, including: most wins 17, most consecutive wins 15, most shutouts 11, most goals 60, and best l.A.C. record 10-1-1. But above the records this team was a strong unit that records would have to be set. ln the goal, John Tegaris and Marco Odiaga com- bined for the record, 11 shutouts. Tegaris had the athletic ability to make all the key saves. As the sea- son wore on, he kept getting better and better, becoming one of the league's finest goalies. Odiaga, 7 wins for 7 starts, was always ready to replace Tegaris. l-le too improved, enough to record 3 shut- outs. Their combined goals allowed was 1.75. Landon's defense was simply tougher than anyone they played. By mid-season, the team realized they would not lose games defensively. At wingbacks, John Simmonds and Jim Rowe were the finest pair in both leagues. Both were tenacious, quick, intelligent defenders, and most important, durable. Tom Fran- gione, a freshman, was the surprise of the season playing with incredible calm and skill. He was at par with his opponents. At stopper, Chris Carris had the heading ability and dribbling skills to clear most any ball. When hurt, Jay Legg came off the football field to replace him. Surprisingly quick with the ball for his size, Jay was an intimidating factor. .... .Ari a s ' X V t b y - H .1 f . ar gg il E i rg' K NNN .ew si .A+ R ff' SE. if S f QW'- 3, , At halfback, Jim Gilbert had a slight dilemma, playing next to two All-Met, All-l.A.C. halfbacks. Though he didn't score much, Wilbur put unending effort into every ball. His ball and passing skills devel- oped a great deal. Not enough can be said of Dave Snyder and Sutton Stern. Their skills doubled as team leaders, co-captains. Sutton Stern, asked to play striker, defense and halfback, came through with a typical Stern season, one that impressed everyone but himself. Dave Snyder is, as Mr. Sundt said, The finest player Landon has ever had. No one could shoot- or dribble like him. He made the offense move with his fantastic passing and great touch. At striker, Landon had a three-way punch that showed passing, speed, and scoring. Saul Hoppen- stein was a constant threat with his overpowering speed. Hoppy scored several beautiful, twisting shots. Kevin Houley and Matt Carberry were a team that could rival any. Matt was the cooler ball control expert. Kevin was the full-speed-ahead scoring maniac. Other than the starters, the substitutes and the coaches added crucial help. Mike Johnston, Mike Amitay, Walker Simpson, Mike Ament, Khuluma Zulu, Tom Friedman, John Knebel, Steve Tseckares, Steve Berkowitz and Steve Gunther gave the team depth. Their versatility made them available at all times. Eleven players are not as successful by them- selves without backups. Words cannot describe the worth of Mr. Sundt. He is the classiest coach in both leagues. Calm, patient, he didn't dominate but supervised. Mr. Zaiser com- bined his pacing and managing to provide the wis- dom needed. To both these men, Landon owes a tre- mendous debt for this fantastic year. 2 CROSS COUNTRY : : , ,,,. ,, ,1,:, .. Only one senior - Captain Charlie Byrd - was on the Varsity. The W team drew most of its strength from the junior contingent. Injuries were a main problem during the season, T' affecting all of the Varsity and much of the J.V. A ,,T, squad. The season did have its highlights though. In the meets against Mercersberg and Bullis, the Varsity v f won overwhelmingly. At the l.A.C.'s, though the team took 4th, it was a close battle with Prep for 3rd all the way. And Vince Duane, a junior, received All- l.A.C. for his efforts, as well as clocking one of the fastest times run by a Landon student on the home course. Wally Acton, a sophomore, established himself as a topnotch runner. F K - , 2 HE-Q 'if as The Varsity basketball team was certainly that - a team - but what a bunch of individuals. Scott Simpson - BigS The DOORS to stardom opened for Bigs with an outstanding sophomore season. Bigs always gave a CONCERTed effort. Dave Ebner - Ebbs As one of our two talented sophomores Dave con- tributed with spot duty and showed a lot of potential. Ebb's long term ambition is to play pro ball in Israel. Scott Johnston To quote Mr. Davis, Scotty, do we have to get you a nurse? Despite his time on the injured reserve list, Scott worked his way into the starting line-up with hustle and desire. Todd Breier -- Buck , Rabbs While leading the team in dunks and missed dunks, Todd also led the team in Steals Technicals Assists Rabbs could always be counted on in the clutch. Con Falvey - Corny All-around quality of Con's game improved greatly as the season progressed. Still needs a little work on his shot from one foot and in. Michael Devaughn - Deacon Bigs roomy. The consummate team player once again showed that nice guys do not finish last. Serv- ed as body guard for the Preppies on inner city road trips. Mike Carberry - Carbs One of the team's two General Hospital fanatics. Carbs showed flashes of brilliance as one of the team's three revolving door point guards. Chris Caskin - Casky , Spanky Always a crowd favorite. One of the finest fastbreak players in the IAC. Led the team in in- sulting Bigs. Jaye Andrews -- Drews , t'Sleepy Three year vet. Other General Hospital junky. As team captain inspired Landon students with his arousing announcements. The team would like to thank Coach Davis and Z for all their dedication. Thanks, also, to Eric, Riaz, and John whose crucial roles often went un- noticed. And special thanks to Mr. Jacoby, the cheerleaders, Marco, Buck, Corey, Greg, and the pit crew. And let us not forget Coach Thiel who gave his time and patience over the summer to benefit our program. r , r H NL ,Q ,. X ,MJ as ' 'E' it x 5' aa A 1' awww' Ee, J 5, P. e 1 MW ..,,..
