There is hardly a more fastidious individual to be observed about Landon. Everything from his flat-topped haircut. daily trimmed with an electric razor. to the pitch of his mufllers is adjusted to per- fection. Although the advice of his elders has played an important role in the de- velopment of his sense of values, lloward is in essense a self-made and independent lad. He holds in abeyance a large portion of his earnings in order to meet such emergencies as traffic fines and drought. Howie has a prehensile mind and is con- tinually probing to see to which mode of life he is most readily adaptable. He is constantly changing his brands and girls-a habit which perhaps explains why his academic grades are in a constant state of Hux. 16 Anytlzing but lzistory, for liistory must be falsef, -Sir Robert XVulpole Tlze Colonel, having learned through experience the torments of the boarding department. now arrives at school early to Haunt his present freedom before the destitute souls in Uncle Tomls Cabin. Bart marches to another day of battle with the damn Yankees. Nor does he enjoy respite after luncheon, for he can always be goaded into a defense of Southern fried chicken and culture. But his hecklers dare not push Bart too far in their attack on the empire of Jeff Davis. for the Gray Ghost is president of the Rifle Club and a crack shot. A .,,, Qwff , J Football In early September when football practice began, Coach Ed Barton held high, although somewhat optimistic, hopes for another undefeated season. Landon was picked to win the I..-LC. championship for the second straight year. despite the loss of several key lettermen from last yearls team. Under new I.A.C. rules, a team that scored the extra point by running or passing would receive two points instead of the usual one. This proved to make the game more exciting and in- teresting. Determined spirit began to build as the Bears' opener rapidly approached. On September 26th, Landon took the field against a strong Baltimore Friends, squad. The Bears required only twelve plays from scrimmage after the opening kickoff to score, a lead they never relinquished. After leading 22-0 at half-time, the offense bogged down, but the Bears held on to win 28-2 under the guidance of quarterback Buzz Bastable. The following Friday, the Bears showed their real potential by defeat- ing Bullis High 25-13. The offense ground out 389 yards for what proved to be their strongest offensive effort of the season. After realizing their poten- tial. the Bears felt confident that they could go undefeated. After a week off, Landon played a highly rated St. Stephens team. This game was either supposed to make or breakv Landon. Landon scored first in 84 nf .- ,- H- ff- .- .-1 M N- -Q. Q.. -N -. f-1 v N- .- fv- ,-. N- N- ,..
