Landonis own import of Califomia sunbeams, tree-ripened joe, is whisked onto our no longer colorless campus. Plunging into the day,s activ- ities with unparalleled zest, he earnestly turns to the task at hand, classes. Often causing dis- may to his easy-going classmates, joe industri- ously attempts to answer any and all questions posed and then proceeds to disconcert the questioner by posers of his own. joe happily marches to study hall, where he can continue to search for further questions in order to con- vince the dubious of his diligence. His Cali- fornian enthusiasm for tennis undampened but somewhat impeded by Washington weather, joe turns to the basketball court to exhibit his prowess to myriads of aspiring fellow-cagers. Not entirely engaged by his activities here, joe has become entranced by the field of radio electronics. A true ham, this mechanical brain spends much time in the dubious diversion of blabbing with blubbering Eskimos and listen- ing to the mating calls of penguins. But joe is forced to spend some time in maintaining security on the home-front. Because of his proximity to B.C.C., jo jo has become an object of interest to the many beauty queens of that institution, but he makes them keep their distance with the same amiability with which he ignores the wailing of his classmates at this-his supreme stupidity. 33 GUSTAVE NORMAN joHANs1:N, III joey Gus-Cusv Cus' Entered Form VI M.I.T Basketball 6, Tennis 6. There he ponders the abstruse overtones of an addition problem such as two plus three. Arriving at the solution of twenty-three. Ceece bounces up to expatiate on the authenticity of this masterly astute discovery. Considering a success a day sufficient, Connie now returns to the silence of his corner to devote the rest of the day to his hobby-the study of the pathological obser- vations of Freud and other less recondite authors. Eagerly he follows the steps of the master and avidly gulps such esoteric tomes as The Id and Alter 111 of BlllCl7CCl1'll,S Eighth W'ife. After mastering such earth-shaking terms as emotional blocks. sublimated urges. and neurotic frustration. our future psycho- analyst whips through a carefully selected third of his homework, simultaneously think- ing of satirical remarks for this manuscript. As Editor, this little man labored nightly weighing these write-ups while secretly ana- lyzing the members of the staff for future case histories. Taking full responsibility for the result, our chief fears not the possibility of repercussionsg for he can easily show the dis- contented to be afliicted by some mental aber- ration. And, further. that such unmitigated gall as attacking him as editor merely is evinc- ing to the world that they are neurotic noodles. suffering from hydrophobia. 43 CoN'rl-LE THOINIPSON SEELY A'Connie C.C. Steve would be the unanimous choice. He is endowed gener- ously with all of the requisite traits. among which long-windedness is certainly not miss- ing. Loquacious Steve. as he is jocularly called. is possessor of the unusual talent of expatiating url infinitum without in any way committing himself. Another reqiiirement-that of being well-dressed-Steve has mastered, and his achievement is manifest from the bulky chro- nometer and heavy chain of the Diamond .lim Bradyl' era to his modish plaid Park Avenue waistcoats. Conservatism plus modernity are instantaneously conveyed to his auditor as he pulls forth the ancient timepiece from his vest. But not all of Steve's interests are in things materialg full well he knows that man does not live by champagne alone. Carefully cultivat- ing and nurturing his expanding intellect. Steve hopes to convince. through reason or exhortation. the milling throng of the error of its ways. A victim of the current educational cant of the well-rounded youth. Steve is as actively active as it is possible to be. Classes finished. Shapely can be seen gaitiug about the campus pursuing his manifold managerial tasks and urging his myrmidons to greater effort and speed. As twilight descends. Qu X ,E I qY'M',!'9'9iw1 9- Q Kaafeffaf X Late in November the Landon varsity bas- ketball team began practice. Although lacking experience. the team hoped to make speed and spirit carry it to victory. This hope was quickly realized in wins over the Alumni. 43--114 Priory. 49--14: and St. Stephens. 38-32. But the spell was finally broken when the cagers went to defeat at the hands of Georgetown Prep. 58-39. Then they won their first I.A.C. game. 63-51. from Sanford. Three days later. high-ranking Bethesda-Chevy Chase sent the club down to its second defeat. 62-56. After conquering St. james. an I.A.C. team. 5-1-30. the varsity five lost four in a row: Boys' Latin. 55-463 St. Andrews. -16--12g Baltimore Friends. 59-57g and Deklatha. 6-1-42. The first three were I.A.C. contests. and these losses dimmed the Bears' hopes for their second straight championship. Breaking their losing streak against Sidwell Left to right: Steve Shepley ilnanagcrl. Ken Tuggle. -lohansen. John Hayden. Killian NH-bb. Lackey. Bud Hiller. Mr. Barton. Friends. the Bears squeaked out a -19-47 win on the losers' court. The team closed its season in disheartening fashion. however. by losing to Gonzaga. 85-551 its arch-rival. St. Albans. 5-1-384 and Episcopal. 69-55. in regular season games. and by dropping a 63-61 decision to Priory in the post-season Priory Invitational Tournament. Thus the Bears finished their schedule with six wins and ten losses. Despite the teanfs weak finish. Third Former Bnzzy Bastable ended in brilliant fashion. scoring twenty-nine and twenty-three points in the final two games. He and Captain Nlaury Poyich were chosen for the All-Prep second team. Poyich was also selected to play in the All- Private-All-Catholic game. As many first string- ers are Third and Fourth Formers. the Bears' outlook for the coming three years would seem to be bright. llal Blajwas. Bob Zuckcrl. Toni Camp. However. every game which was lost or tied. except the second Blair game. was extremely close. One goal margins were com- mon. and a few of the goals. piled up in the 4-0 and 5-1 defeats of Longfellow. if applied in other games. might have meant a successful season. The two games played with St. Albans were exceptionally hard fought. ln the first. despite a three goal performance by right-wing Nlorrie Davis. the hooters went down to a 5-4 defeat. The second game was actually much closer than the 3-1 score indicates. St. Albans scored two goals in the closing minutes to win after Davis had tied the game up early in the final quarter. The starting line-up. evolved after consider- OCCQI' able trial and error by Coach Priudle. con- sisted of Davis and Boy Cole at wings. Bill Hutchinson and Pete Sendroy at insides: Sandy Linthicum at center forwardg Bob Lanigan. jeff Fort. and Bich Campbell at halfbacksq Captain Larry Krucoff and Doug Parsons at fullbacksg and Eddie XVorthy at goal. Despite its poor won-loss record. the soccer team did not have an entirely unsuccessful season. XVhile it lost four more games than it won. it scored only three fewer goals than its opponents. Davis. the seasons high scorer. was named to the All-Xletropolitan team and played in the All-Star game. Krucoff. Lanigan. and Butler received honorable mention on the All-Xletropolitan team.
