BLACKWELL SINIITH BRUNER Blackie,' Black Entered Grade 6 Dartmouth Dance Committee 3, 4, 5, 6, Landon News 6g Glee Club 3, 4, 5, 6, Special Music Group 6, Octet 6, L Club 4, 5, 6, Football 4, 5, 6, AII- Prep 5, Basketball 3, 4, 5, 6, Captain 6, All- Prep 5, 6, Baseball 3, 4, 5, 6. I A wretched soul, bruised with adversity. -Sbukespearr' In a class iu which there is a different leader in nearly every Held that the school affords, Blackwell Bruner holds his place. Blackie everyday fights his way through a forest of p.hysics teachers, knowledge, and other im- pedimenta until he reaches his open field-that of athletics. It is then that Blackie clears his mind of cant and pursues the sports of foot- ball, basketball, and baseball with boyish exuberance. His even temperament, marked by coolness and composure, has made him Lan- don's pressure playerf' the man who calls the football signals and shoots last second foul shots. But Blackiels interest does not lie en- tirely on the athletic Held. Weekends always roll around, and they find Brother Bruner, with his faithful disciple Austin, popping up at every social function preaching the gospel of 'iDe Lawdf' In his revivals, our evangelist in a period of five minutes has the whole house and Daniel screaming, Hallelujah,,' and tear- ing their hair for their irretrievable sins. But in the middle of the emotional frenzy, Blackie never fails to keep his characteristic compos- ure. When all have reached the peak of mass hysteria, Brother Blackie carries his disciple out to the black jaguar and glides off into the night toward the next stop on his list, hopeful of another stimulating and appreciative recep- tion. 22

JOHN FRANCIS BURBANK i'johu11y', Entered Grade -I Brown Bnowx AND XV111'r1: 6g Drumu Clulz 5, 64 Glec' Club 5, 6g Quill and Seroll 6g Soveer -1. 5. 6. 9 3.1 ,Wil ..+f' Ali, llflllf slmulfl life ull llllIlN'I1UlJu -Tl'llllll.S'lIlI The IIlOSt typical Landonite of tl1e class of '56 is a warin-hearted but frustrated individual llilllllil John Burbank. Existing i11 a delirious state most of the day, John never comes to 1111til late at 11igl1t i11 the Yearbook 1neeti11gs. At this time l1e is likely to break i11to u11re- strained peals of laughter at the mere mention of a word. As the evening drags on, I. B. threatens to sever his left ear with tl1e bloody Yearbook sword, b11t instead l1e proceeds to stuff the inoffensive auditory organ i11to his l1ead. Tl1is feat is surpassed only by acts two and tl1ree-the wiggling of the helix and the poppiug forth of tl1e 2ll'lOl'6Illl lltl0llt'll tuber. Choked witl1 emotion by applause, he con- ti11ues with I'ClHll1lSC6'IlCCS about his bo1111ie lass. 111 like manner, he is often heard mutter- i11g words of disgust i11 the rear of abomin- able math or physics classes. Perl1aps tl1is hatred of 1natl1 2lIlCl physics is the reason for his u11ti1nely upsetting of the Chevy Chase car pool. XVhen anyone is late to math class I. B. was driving or supposed to be. john is also kIl0VVll as an adept tender of the 11ets for Landon's soccer eleve11. Clad i11 blue jeans and a yellow shirt john represe11ts a formidable obstacle to tl1e eyes of an opposing forward. As tl1e s1111 sets o11 johnis Landon career, we see l1im standing 011 a rocky crag gazing out to sea where a white-winged pelican plunges ayariciously for l1er dinner. 24
