Of these thirty-one pioneers of the class of '56, only nine have overcome the many adversities that haye con- fronted them in the path of advancement to seniority. jim Camphell and Tod Owen. present Landon News standouts, are two of these stalwart frontiersmen. Boh Gifford. along with Mac Langford. the eminent canine mentor. were also introduced. Dorsey Young and Courtland Ferguson added the loquacious element. Chris Granger selected Landon hecause of its proximity to his haronial estate on Biver Boad. Bohin Prince and jon Sullivan. our council president. were the first memhers of our class to attain their driyer's license and draft cards. The fourth grade saw the arrival of john Burhank, a promising linguist for Sir. Nlotroni. The next year hrought two lum- hermen. Tom Kern and Ike Eisinger. who Louldnit see the academic forest for the trees-and still can't. George Baynor, Mr. Bates' prodigy, was the one other addition. Bob Banks. the teetotaler. and Blackie Bruner, the athlete. were two of the prominent newcomers. Allman Forcione. the future Editor of the Bnowx AND XVIIITIC, made a valuahle addition to the sen- ior class of the Lower School. 'iBagtime Bonnie llurston and the omniscient Orson YVells, along with those antipodes. the XVilliams hrothers, completed the latest enlistment. As the class entered the Nliddle School, a Star rose ahoye Landon Tennis Courts. He was to he eclipsed only hy jack YVedge Buchan- an who tooled in at this time to take a place beside Claudius Engle l. future originator. director. and coordinator of all school activities. .Host Popular liiggest Brute ,fur .,-- r m 11' 1' ' 1 lllfll innings X ... Sherwood Forest. Though the second form saw no growth in the size of the class. it did see a growth in reputation. This fame resulted from the methods adopted by the class in its frustration of the progressive techniques introduced by two Harvard educational experts who quickly retired to Laputa. The second forms fierceness was checked when in the third form. 'iCra- dle-robbern Baskett, Casinoi' Clark. i'Razor Edge, and 'iXVings Yeerhoff arrived. The final additions were made in the fourth form year. That man-about-town. Al Elbrick, and Frank, the Debutantef, XVeller came to give Mclassw to our class. George NIL-Ceney cycled in. attired in black leather jacket and motorcycle boots. Bill Poulton gained fame from his imitation of YVupy Foo Bradshaw. Racket- wielding YVilt volleyed ln to bolster the tennis team, and the class of 1955 was complete. As we look over the last ten years. we can cite with amazement the classis outstanding characteristics. XVe have a range in academics that defies the best slide rule artist. in athletics from the fiercest to the gentlest of mortals. in loquaciousness from those who can't stop talk- ing to others who have never been heard to utter a Word, in disposi- tion from those who pet Copper to others beside whom Garibaldi would seem a conservative - thus the class of '-56. a heterogeneous group. Yet it is unified in its loyalty to Landon and appreciative of the years spent under the banner of the Brown and XVhite. Hes! .-Uliletc' .Vos-I Iintertzlirzing HAL 5? Bob goes into a somnolence which some explain is induced hy his exertion in walking between classes, hut which others. more cynical, claim is a result of his inherent laziness. But this dormancy is deceptively superficial. For Falstaff is always alert and never fails to prove it with a pierc- ing. XVhat's he talking ahout? that disrupts the daydreanis of his companions and tem- porarily halts Sherman's march to the sea. Uuahle to regain soporific hliss immediately. Falstaff shifts uncomfortahly and thinks of that which has made him the man he is-eat- ing. Because of this proclivity, he is in the forefront of the Landon ice cream eaters and has. in achieving this position, saved the Brown and lVl1ite from financial disaster. But not until nightfall does our Nlerry Sack wake and hit TT-his peak. XVith a dinner of two steaks under his helt. he settles hy the tele- phone and one hy one gives his many female cohorts the henefit of his vivacious wit. After accomplishing this elcemosynary task, Boh hlissfully pursues an hour or two of study and then rolls to his favorite hangout-his hed. 20 'l'luc p1lr1'.s'filffcclion ilu' In-art mn lmlfl Is- tlu' lioncst lou' of ll ninv gfcur vial. -ll.1'. His broad bronzed back, glistening in the sun, and his hand constantly on the wheel, the solitary old salt meditates. He thinks about life and how he would like to live it. If only he had the courage to break all ties and sail the Spanish Nlain as the buccaneers of oldl He sees him- self all alone fighting the angry sea off Tierra del Fuego or sailing into a calm mysterious harbor of the uninhabited island of Hatie. At one moment he is eating a can of beans in a cave of New Cuineag at another he is battling the aborigines of the Amazon River. But our seaman is always alone. Never is there even a glimpse of a female companion. For Captain Clark, no true sailor in his philosophy on the fairer sex, regards the legendary seaman with a girl in every port as a worthless illusion forced upon the gullible American public by romantic movie producers. But suddenly a motor boat zooms by splashing our old salt in the face and breaking his peaceful reverie. It is then that Preston sees everything realistically -the countless stack of school books that looms as far as he can see into the future. 26 ll'or'rl.vsl1'4'el 11vlunu'g1fron: his lips' rlistill'1l -l'np4' Being blessed with every conceivable form of high-school stereotype. it is no wonder that there exists amongst us a child prodigy. Descending on Landon School in the first form. this shining star quickly blazed through a whole host of opposition on the tennis courts and then proceeded to become the necessary 'well-rounded individual' The methods be used to prove that the latter was not a difficult achievement were merely subtle ramifications of his masterful techniques in the world of sharkskin shorts and clay courts. Already an established tennis idol. he set about convert- ing that close-knit. highly competitive family organization that runs Landon School into the L. S. L. T. A. Accomplishing this with little effort. he next set about becoming Number One universally ranked by this newly converted group. Using all of his vast knowledge of tennis deception. this more difficult task was achieved by his fourth form year. when his efforts were rewarded by proclamation from above. Having completely conquered the small world of Landon, Donnie decided to challenge the world of the opposite sex. Finding that the fast volley was the most effective. he scored ace after ace in this department. culminating his achievement with the acquisition of a blue Cadillac convertible. Thus in his final days at Landon. Donald Dell can justifiably argue. as he often secretly does. that football is not what it is cracked up to be. 27 Doxsisusox LUNDY DELL i'Donny'l Don Entered Form l Princeton Siuclenf Council 5. 6g Vive-Pr'e.s'iclcr1I 61 Dance Cmnniittec 3. -1. 5. 6: Landon News -l. 5. 61 Glen' Cluln -1. 5. 6g Special Music Group fig L Club 4. 5. 61 Bear Clulz 64 Quill mul Scroll fi: Bzlsketlmll 3. -1. 5. 61 Co-Captain 51 All-Prep 5. 61 xkll-.llf'fl'01IUlllllIl 5. 61 Tennis 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 61 Captain 4. 5. 1- l. Crowling profusely. Tom with his long stringy mane fills the hearts of his antagonists with panic. To his fellow scholars. Tom presents a more docile mien. The one outstanding char- acteristic of Tom is that he respects silence. To Tom silence is an institution holding the key to Peace in this harried world: and he tries. in his quiet way. to convert his companions. Yes. Tom is a godsend to all masters bothered by classroom noise and erudite nonsense. Hiro- hito is never bothered with questions, foolish or otherwise, from Tours corner. His attempts to prove that silence is golden is very much in evidence on the athletic field. During a foot- ball game Tom goes about his difficult job of line-backer with a grim determination and reserve that would shame one Mr. XVilliam Triplett on the trail of a malefactor. In soccer. T exhibits a ferocity and go-get-'emu atti- tude unusual for that fun loving aggregation. Sneaking up from nowhere, he hooks one foot in front of an opponents and claws the ball away. Tom plans to carry his crusade to the new Air Force Academy. He has decided that. although peace is the desired element, a few atomic bombs may be necessary to persuade the obstinate of its value. So. we leave Tiger Tom with the hope that in the Air Force Academy. at least. he may break the sound barrier. 28 Cf . .f , f 'M f. His theatrical experience has provided him with the ability to simulate the entire gamut of human emotions, and with little effort he slips from acute anguish to jubi- lant exuberation in venting his exasperation or approval while watching an athletic contest. Here is a true Landon patriot. And off the Held, both classmates and teachers have found Mal- colm a patient and complacent listener. Sadly, his actions are often taken to be those of a sycophant: for one would not expect to find a sympathetic supporter among the egoistic who compose the Sixth Form. But Malcolm has his moments of dominance in two widely separated fields. somehow related by the man- ner in which he treats them-teaching the art of love to dispassionate young ladies and teaching the art of acrobatics to dogs. For women and dogs can be charmed by music. and when that yawning Langford cavern gapes in golden sonic effulgence, the naiads, dryads, and dogs really flip. Yes. the college that takes Frank llar- low NVQ-ller under its wing will have to cope with an individual and a true egoist. ltl Fimxctis llAiu,ow xVl'1I,LEH. ju. i'Frank Entered Form IY Princeton Dunee Connnitfee 6g Gln' Club 4, 5. 64 Special .llusie Group 5. fig Octet 6g Footlmll 6. -whwirl -...N k it r - . -xc 5 -sw., '-ss W . , .N 1 X ...nk NN! , sh -ss.. if 1. . The rnrlrcli of the lmnmn mind is .vlou'.,' -Burkr After his years at Landon Robert. dubbed incongruously Orson. must feel that the lift- of a genius is a hard one. For his arguments. usually concerned with the Lilliputian trivia of a genius and supported by both logical absurdities and dreams, never fail to draw the ridicule of his conventional and stupid classmates. Robert places himself in a werld of abstract formulas and geometric designs. and his sympathetic 'friends try in vain to disillusion him. He degrades himself daily by attending math classes. the subject matter of which he could have passed years ago. After school Robert retreats to a corner in the dormitory where he can listen to the strains of Nlozart or llaydn and stimulate himself with the beauty of the figure At night Bob is siezed by the ruffian members of the boarding department and forced to do their homework. Curiosity and persuasion have forced him to attend social functions, but needless to say. he is a woman hater. Orson with logic will always try to prove to his more semantically minded friends the superior beauty of a formula over a female. Though displaying admirable valid- ity. Robert is refuted by the statement: The whole question is absurd-it's ridiculous. And Bob will again enter the ethereal realm to find solace in solitude and in those figures and equations which will make super-engines pos- sible and end in making his tormentors an even greater menace to a thoughtful society. 50 Silence is the most perfect expression of scorn. -Shaw Time has been a factor in the solution of many puzzles, and it has been important in partially cracking the tortoise-like shell that has concealed the real, the true, Frank Wil- liams. Entering Landon in the sixth grade, the little man-child slowly became known for his misanthropic outlook, to which later was appended, misogynistic, because of his shy- ness and also out of consideration-since Frank felt at home only when things were in pairs. Had he been more vocal, Frank, with this perspective on life, might have become a terror to the class, but fortunately he did not choose to speak-or maybe he just didn't know the words. So slowly, onward and upward, strug- gled our silent terrestrial turtle until he unwit- tingly found himself in the sun. It was in the spring of '54 when Frank received his first varsity letter in tennis, that, much to his sur- prise, he found his vocal chords. Today, with a little plying, he employs these quite liber- ally, although he is careful not to overwork them. His greatest strides, however, have been taken on the courts when, struggling to scale the heights of Kramer, Trabert, and Dell, he has adeptly gained recognition from Landon to Mount Vernon and quite shaken his misan- thropic, misogynistic foundations. Indeed the world seems in danger of becoming rosy, and Frank is alarmed at the thought of becoming a Don juan. XVe fondly hope that the Catcher in the Rye will continue to talk, he has a good voice. 51 FRANCIS GOODWIN VVILLIALIS NVilly Frank Entered Gracie 6 Brown Soccer 5, 6, Tennis 4, 5, 6. His ability at soccer is pulling the Key on one end. and his disability at physics is stubbornly holding it back. That is. the recoggitiou gained by his soccer play- ing is drawing out his character while physics. although not pulling him backward. is pre- venting all attempts at advance. This trouble with physics is more psychological than men- tal. for he had an inexplicable premonition at the beginning of the year that he would not shine in this course. The prediction is cvincing reliable signs of coming true, how- ever. and physics may win the tug of war yet. Because of an ill-destined attempt at getting in. a not-too-frequent action with jan. without a key. our boy suffered an injury. If successful seasons are determined by the number of wins and losses. then this yearfs soccer team was not successful. Uut of thir- teen scheduled games. the booters managed to win only three and tie one. Suffering early season losses of forwards Tom Baskett and lNick Temple, the team just couldnit stick together. and spirit gradually declined. The squad lacked the depth and experience necessary to win. With Alban Foreione the only one of Landon's experienced scorers un- injured. Coach Prindle was forced to switch positions-fullbacks to halfbacks and half- backs to linemen. Unaccustomed to their new positions. the Bears. after an opening game tie with Woodberry Forest, lost five straight games. Finally, the team traveled to Virginia for a match with an inexperienced St. Stevens team. and came home with its first victory of the season, 3-0. After losing to Sidwell Friends in the rain. Landon played host to Episcopal OCCQI' in a return contest and turned the tables on the Fred team, winning 2-1. XVith two victories in the three games. the Bears with soaring spirits prepared to defeat the champion St. Albans team. This was not to be. however. for after leading 2-U at halftime. they were scored upon four times in the third period and lost 4-3. The next week, the Brown team enjoyed its first and only 1.A.C. triumph of the year. defeating St. James of Hagerstown 1-0. Attempting to upset Sidwell Friends in their final game. the Bears took an early lead but could not hold back the Quakers. who won 3-1. Although the soccer team had a poor season. there were several outstanding seniors whom Coach Prindle will have difficulty replacing next year. Among these were Captain Tom Baskett and Alban Forcione. both of whom were selected for the All-Nletropolitan Team. Nlr. Prindle. however. can but look forward to a better record than that of this yearys squad. 106 ma.
