Will we ever for- get our Junior-Senior Proms or the Halloween Carnival? These, have in- deed been the best years of our lives. We want to thank all of the faculty for : helping us make it a success. In hopes that we’ll never forget these wonder- ful days at Landis High School and all of our classmates, we the Senior Class” of 1961, proudly present this, the last. Yellow Jacket. : 7 We, the Senior Class of 1961, would like to leave this, the last edition of the YELLOW JACKET, in memory of the “spirit of L.H.S.” We owe much to her and will never forget her. May her spirit always live in our hearts. In a sincere effort to show our appreciation for the invalu- able friendship, guidance, and inspiration she has given us, we dedicate this 1961 edition of the YELLOW JACKET to MRS. MADGE SIFFORD Mr. T.F. Bostian Mr. H.A. McCreary Superintending Principal Principal Landis High School Landis District “Mr, Herman Absher Mrs. Roy Barrow Mr. Dewey Caudle _ Mrs. Earl Cavin Miss Janice Conder Mr. Bill Dameron Miss Sylvia Trivette Secretary Mrs. Tommy Day Mr. Tommy Day Mrs. Myrtha Doron Mr. Charles Driver Miss Yvonne Goodman Mr. Richard Hampton Mr. Grady Lewis Mr. Tom McCormick ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY Mrs. Clyde Merritt, Jr. Mrs. Glenn Miller Mr. Jerry Pless Mr. Melvin Ramseur Miss Valoree Shinn Mrs. Harold Sifford Mrs. Joe Sloop Mr. Charles Yates Mrs. J. B. Faggart Mr. Steve McCurdy Mrs. Bewey Shaver Mr. S. P. Teague Cooking is only one of the various tasks that girls who are taking Home Economics tearn to do. Mrs. Sloop, their - teacher, keeps them well in- formed on what to do, what to wear, and how to always put their best foot forward. How good a citizen are you? In American History Mrs. Cavin teaches her stu- dents how to be a better citizen, how to live in the world, and meet the politi- cal, economical, and social problems, and most of all, how to get along with each other. The library is the center of attraction when it’s time for research work and term papers. Mrs. Linn, our libra- rian, is very helpful in as- sisting us to secure the ne- cessary information. Most people would be lost in a chemistry lab, but not these students. With the guidance of Mrs. Barrow, they learn how to find what’s in their solutions and how to identify various metals. How many words can you type in a minute? These typ- ing students, taught by Mrs. Merritt, are learning speed, efficiency, and skill. Fond memories of “Julius Caesar”? “Friends, Ro- mans, and Countrymen— lend me your ears” or “Be- ware the Ides of March”. These famous lines will never be forgotten by these Sophomores. Here is a Freshman Eng- lish class which is taught by Mr. Yates. Now having discovered what high school English is like, they are ready for their second year. Do you have a problem as to which college or career to choose? Or is it a per- sonal problem that needs a sympathetic ear? Mrs. Glenn Miller, our counselor, is ready, willing and able to help you. We had to share her this year with China Grove, but next year at South Rowan the door to her office will be open every day. Practice, practice, practice. It seems that it never ceases. Under the direction of Mr. Charles Driver, our band has made various appearances throughout this year, one of which was the Shrine Bowl in Charlotte. The hustle and bustle of changing classes is caught by our photographer. We have just enough time to get our books and rush on to the next class. NNOUNCEMENTS | be _ 2... Geography is a very inter- esting subject, because it gives you the background, resources, topography, log- istics, and general infor- mation on the people of the world. Mr. Lewis teaches this course and he puts em- phasis on placement geog- raphy and knowing the re- lationships of the various countries of the world. The boys taking Agricul- ture, under the direction of Mr. Teague, do much outdoor work. These boys are learn- ing to survey. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS President .... Vice President Sec. Treas. . This is a babysitter ? : Straight from Paris Now a word from our sponsor. I always spend my vacations in Florida. Does this do anything for me? CLASS HISTORY Our days as students at Landis High School will soon be over. We, as seniors, will no longer be a javt of Landis in body, only in spirit. How can we yver forget all the exciting times we had both at school and the activities connected with this, “our ichool”! As graduation. grows nearer, we think f leaving Landis, and our hearts become heavy vith regret. No longer will we feel that surge of ‘ride as we are praised and told that it was a uccess. Walking down that aisle to receive our iplomas, we try to cling to each and every memory, nowing that this moment ends our high school ays. We reach out and try to draw the moments loser to our hearts and try to relive each and very one of them. Remembering our Freshman year, we think about he first Freshman-Sophomore Prom Landis High ichool ever had, and pride again fills our hearts, 1S we realize our class started this memorable ‘vent. Many thanks go to Mr. Grady Lewis and Mr. Steve McCurdy for helping us make it a success. ‘Rhapsody In Blue” was our theme. Rudy Wise, President of our class; Gene Corriher, Vice Presi- jent; and Brenda Isenhour, Secretary-Treasurer served our class well. We were very proud when Bobby Wilkinson was presented the Beta Club Award, and Darrell Spry was crowned King of the Halloween Carnival. As we entered our Sophomore year, we elected Jerry Beaver, President; Linda Wilcox, Vice Presi- dent; and Judy Davis, Secretary-Treasurer to lead us through this year. Bobby Wilkinson was elected Secretary-Treasurer of the Student Government. After finishing our Sophomore year, we were more self-confident and were eagerly awaiting our Junior year. Finally we were Juniors and the days were filled with more activities than ever before . This was an important year that would require much hard work. We elected officers who would shoulder much re- sponsibility and give up much of their free time. Many thanks go to our President, Rudy Wise; Vice President. Jerry Beaver; Secretary, Brenda Bost; Brenda Isenhour Brenda Bost Historians and Treasurer, Hollis Miller. Our first task was to produce a successful Halloween Carnival which would pay for our Junior-Senior Prom. May 6, 1960. That date will never be forgotten. That was the night of the Junior-Senior Prom. It was said to be the best Landis has ever had. Our theme was “Dreamland” and that’s exactly what it was. How can we ever express our appreciation to Mrs. Glenn Miller and Mrs. Harold Sifford for advising and guiding us through a successful year. Also that year 28 of our classmates were tapped into the Beta Club, which was under the direction of Mr. Grady Lewis. Serving as Marshals were: Co- chiefs, Janice Smith and Brenda Isenhour; also Kay Stirewalt, Virginia Davis, Linda Wilcox, Louise Harrington, Judy Beaver, Kenneth Daniels, Harvey Whitley, and Bobby Wilkinson. At graduation Bar- bara, Watts received the American History Award and(Becky Wright; the Home Economics Award. All too soon we began our Senior year—and now to think it’s almost over. Our Senior Class officers were: President, Linda Allman; Vice President. Eric Lovette; Secretary-Treasurer, Darrell Spry; Reporter, Carolyn Lambert; and Parliamentarian, Michael Freeze. In the magazine campaign we exceeded our goal of $2400 by $360.91. Our high salesmen were: Perry Beaver, Barbara Garver, Ralph Kennerly, and Bar- bara Watts. ti} Our beauties chosen this year were: Miss Merry _Christmas, Barbara Brafford;“ Miss Homecoming, 86 Gail Childers; Miss Hi Miss, Linda Wilcox. Thank you, girls, for representing our school so well. And now graduation is no longer a dream but will soon be a reality. All of us will be making a very important decision that we hope will make our future bright and successful. But wherever we are and whatever we’re doing we shall always - thai: Landis High School and the faculty for guiding us and showing us the road to success. As we reach out for our diplomas, we’ll think back over these years and breathe a sigh of both relief and regret. F cam Fis ae Wn: Hecht Wr.
