CLASS HISTORY Now as time is drawing near for us to leave Landis; we look back over the past years and wonder just what we have accomplished. Let’s turn back now and see what has happened. As “green” Freshmen we entered high school’ not knowing exactly what our goal would be. Our advisors Mr. Bell, Mrs. Barrier, Mrs. Cavin, and Mr. Roberts got us off to a successful start by giving us confidence in our own abilities. We were very proud when we elected as our officers, President, Woodrow Freeze; Vice President, Jerry Edwards; Secretary-Treasurer, Bobby Spry; and Reporter, Jean Watts. As a climax to our Freshman year Shelby Galloway was elected Secretary- Treasurer of the Student Government. Entering into our second year as Sophomores, we felt big because we had someone to look down on. To guide us through the year we elected: President, Woodrow Freeze; Vice President, Bobby Spry; and Secretary-Treasurer, Nancy Eller. Our Advisors were Mr. Lyerly, Miss Willett, Mr. and Mr. Goodman. Ramseur, After another successful year, Shelby Galloway was elected by the Student Body as Second Vice President. To start off our Junior Year, we elected as our leaders: President, Bobby Spry; Vice President, Bill Shive; Secretary, Carolyn Patterson; and Treasurer, Nancy Barnhardt. Our Advisors were Mrs. Cross, Mrs. Cavin, Mr. Ramseur, and Mrs. Beaver. Our first achievement was the Halloween Carnival which proved to be a big success. HISTORIANS SALLIE KARRIKER Nancy ELLER As Juniors we found to our surprise that our own classmates were talented. These talents were brought out in the production of “Hill-Billy Weddin’ ” under the direction of Mrs. Wayne Beaver. Some of our classmates were honored by being invited into the Beta Club which later presented a play “The Skeleton Walks” under the direction of Mr. Thomas Lyerly. Our congratulations go to Shelby Galloway who was elected President of the Student Government for the coming year and Jean Watts who was elected Ist Vice President. The year was highlighted by the Junior-Senior Banquet which we gave in honor of the Seniors. “The Mardi Gras,” the theme of the banquet was planned by Mrs. Cross. Serving as Marshalls at the Graduation exercises were: Shelby Galloway and Jerry Edwards Chiefs; Carolyn Morrow, Eleanor Henley, Sallie Karriker, Jean Watts, Polly Berryman, Barbara Deal, Betty Cudd, Mildred Broadway, and Betty Garmon. Also at graduation three of our classmates received special awards. They were Nancy Eller, Commercial Award; Mildred Yost, Home Economics Award; and Nancy Mullis, American History. As we think back over the years in athletics, we know that our class has contributed a lot. No one person was outstanding but the greatest honor came when the Girls’ Basketball Team, which five members of our class belong, came in Second Place in the State Championship. Our final year in high school began with the electing of officers. They were: President, Woodrow Freeze; Vice President, Jerry, Edwards; Secretary-Treasurer, Bill Shives; Reporter, Barbara Deal; and Parliamentarian, Carolyn Patterson. Our Advisors were Mrs. Merritt, Mrs. Faggart, and Miss Willett. As always happens to Seniors, the time for the sale of magazines came. We topped our goal of $1800.00. The Senior Class, under the direction of Mrs. Faggart, presented the play “The Monkey’s Uncle.” Congratulations go to Jean Watts for being selected as Miss Hi Miss and Miss Merry Christmas and Sallie Karriker as Miss Homecoming. The Junior-Senior Banquet was given in our honor by the Juniors. Now that we come to the close of our high school years, we leave with the satisfaction of knowing that we have accomplished much, The Seniors of 1957 would like to thank all of those who have had a part in making our school days pleasant and successful.
