Land PSS WAEIEIEIO) WF ANIC 1 fe I inte FOREWORD In writing to you, the students of L.H.S., | suppose the first thing to do is introduce myself. | am Christopher Van Stinger, the director and mascot for this edition of the ‘Yellow Jacket.” In order to capture some of the joys and pleasures that you have shared this year, | was chosen to stay with you each day, then record my findings in this annual. Although you did not see me | was with you every minute of the school year. Proof of this is found in the following pages. In the future years, if you are able to thumb through the leaves of this book and recapture with vivid memories your activities of this school term, then | will feel that | have fulfilled my task. W. SD) eee Sctige To her who put forth toil and strife To guide us by the pitfalls of life; Who put us in a warrior’s place With weapons man can not erase; Who gave us nourishment for the mind, The knowledge that we hoped to find; And prepared us for our leaner years By building courage over fears. —Charles Hendrix We, the Senior Class of 1955, dedicate this volume of the YELLOW JACKET to MRS. When we entered High School, in 1951, we were excited about changing classes and having different teachers. We elected Johnny Watson, president; Steve Dial, vice-president; Mary Nell Grisdale, treasurer; and Oleta Karriker, reporter. Our advisors, Mrs. Earl Cavin, Mr. Robert Bell, Mr. Roy Roberts, Miss Doris Lackey and Mr. Dan Hamrick, helped to make this a successful year. We won the class tournament and the girl’s won the Junior Tournament at Scotts. Mary Nell Grisdale was elected Secretary- Treasurer of the Student Association. The next year we were Sophomores, and we thought we were “‘real cool kids.’’ We thought we knew everything there was to know. This year we elected Mary Nell Gris- dale, class president; Bobby Barker, vice- president; Eleanor Kimball, secretary; Jerry Ervin, treasurer; Buddy Strickland, reporter. Mary Nell Grisdale was elected Second Vice-President of the Student Association. We were proud that Nancy Patterson was Hal- loween Queen. Miss Betty Hodges, Mrs. James Tarleton, Mrs. J. B. Faggart and Mr. John Moose were our advisors for our second year. By the time we were Juniors we were really living. We began our Junior year by electing Eleanor Kimball, president; Tommy Kelly, vice-president; Jan James, secretary; and Mary Nell Grisdale, treasurer. Our ad- visors were Mrs. Wayne Beaver, Mrs. Robert Cross and Miss Mary Buchannan. Mrs. J. B. Faggart came to replace Miss Buchannan at mid-term. This was an eventful year. First, there was the Halloween carnival. Instead of giving a play as usual, we had a talent show. The Carnival was held in the gym- nasium. Both turned out to be a big success. The Junior Play, ‘‘Two Days to Marry,” was given in March under the direction of Mrs. Wayne Beaver. Then came the biggest event of the year, the Junior-Senior Banquet. We all worked hard and everyone had a wonderful time— thanks to Mrs. Cross!! The Seniors honored us with a prom in the Gymnasium. Alice Ray Goodnight was elected President of the Student Association for the next year and Tommy Kelly was elected First Vice- President. Carolyn Smithdeal and Eleanor Kimball shared the honor of Chief Marshal at the Graduation Exercises. The great year had finally arrived, we were dignified Seniors at last. What a year this proved to be!! First we elected Gary Chapman, president; Carolyn Smithdeal, vice-president; Susie Walk- er secretary-treasurer; Steve Dial, reporter; and Johnny Watson, parliamentarian. Our advisors were Miss Lillian Barrier, Mrs. J. B. Faggart and Mrs. John Ritchie. Our year began with the magazine cam- paign. Shelby Freeze won first place for selling the most magazines. On November 19th, we gave our class play, ‘“Wild Ginger,’’ under the direction of Mrs. Faggart. Eleanor Kimball was elected Homecoming Queen by the football players, and also Christmas Queen by the Student Body. Alice Ray Goodnight was elected Miss Hi Miss by the Senior Class. The Annual staff was selected with Buddy Strickland as Editor. With mid-term exams over we began to look forward to the Junior-Senior Banquet, given in our honor by the Juniors. Our grade parents then honored the Juniors and Seniors with a prom. Now, as we look over our four wonderful years we realize that they were not dreams or visions but reality. Now, we shall begin our new life with this thought in mind, ‘’Not merely to exist, but to accomplish.’ HISTORIANS: Linda Cavin Jan James assisted by Christopher Van Stinger CLASS We're nearing the end of another year That seems to have gone too fast; And to all the ones who are leaving here, Let me bring back memories of the past. Remember our very first Freshman day? Could we ever go through it again? We didn’t know what to do or say, But we wouldn’t admit it then. We all pretended it was nothing new, But down inside we felt small; And then we picked up a friend or two, And school was not so bad after all. Then our sophomore year came around, It didn’t pass quite so slow; And we.were content with this life we’d found, ‘At least there was someone below. Our Junior year then came after this, And things were really running swell; Schoolwork was hardly a part of the bliss, But we learned our lessons well. POEM The Junior-Senior Prom was a main event, That started off a chain of fun. Then summer came and quickly went, And our last school year was begun. It was then that we learned we’d miss it all; This life we have known for so long. Our hearts are sad as we walk through the hall, Though our lips may be humming a song. So in earnestness I'll say that I‘Il miss you some, And let me bid you all adieu. And no matter how dark this world may become. May the light of knowledge shine through. MIXED CHORUS SEORIS School life would be incomplete without our athletic program. First comes football, exciting from the opening kick-off until the final blast of the referee’s whistle. Then basketball with all its familiar sounds—whistles, yells, and pounding feet. Warm spring weather brings out the baseball team, and we hear the inevitable “‘cat-calls’’ and good-natured insults. Sports are fun and competition exciting, but our athletic program has an even more important purpose—that of building strong minds and bodies, teamwork, and good sportsmanship. We like to win, of course, but even when we lose, we’re proud of the good sportsmanship displayed by our teams. aj HH 120 Es CAPTAINS Buddy Meacham Gene Freeman FOOTBALL Mr. Jim Goodman, Coach Mr. Tom Jones, Coach Adolphus Castor Gene Freeman Harold Roseman Tommy Bostian Eric Ennis Keller Deal 54 First Row, left to right: Keller Deal, Adolphus Castor, Gene Freeman, Larry Cook, Sonny Ramseur. Testators, CAROL ANN SEAFORD OLETA KARRIKER book to Witness: CHRISTOPHER VAN STINGER CLASS TAR Oy ialsteal Dear Students: Since the graduation of the class of ‘55, many people have asked me about the ad- vancement of this class. Well, | can say that this class is well ahead in the world. Shirley Donaldson and Phyllis Sells are using some of the intelligence they acquired in high school. They are co-authors of the book ‘1000 Excuses for Skipping School.”’ Billy Hobbs has just bought the millionth copy with hopes that he will finish with the Glass of ‘66. Also in the best sellers category is the book written by Mildred Scercy and Connie Deason entitled “‘“Men Are Beasts.’’ This book is being made into a movie and the leading part of Horace the woman-hater is being played by J. E. Helms. Other leading roles are Gertrude the Go-Getter, played by Gail Smith, and Matilda the old maid by Shirley Brown. Still in the motion picture industry | found that Bobby Barker, Norman Foutz and Billy Reavis have just received Oscars for their roles in the hit movie ‘Three Lovers.”’ Beivingeit: Up With Dial” is one of fi. V.'s top comedy shows. It is written, produced, directed and starred in by Steve Dial. Sue Lipe is a hit in the Broadway show “Look In The Mirror Honey, Your Lipstick Is Smeared.”’ Managers of the three famous Strickland Dance Studios, owned by world-renowned Nathlee Curtis—better known to us as Buddy Strickland, are the former T. V. chorus girls, Linda Graham, Carolyn Lefler, and Joann Lipe. In the political field | found that Jerry Ervin, Tommy Kelly, and Jerry Wright are working for the U. S. as economic stabilizers. They have just distributed their latest pam- phlets, “Two Can Live As Cheaply As One’ (as long as one doesn’t eat). Becky Luther and Verlene Funderburk are their ‘yes’ women. 63 May a7 ealiz 65 Wejarelicy INL GC. The highly publicized candidate for presi- dent of the U. S. is none other than Alice Raye Goodnight. Her slogan is ‘’Anything a man can do | can do better.’’ She hopes to be the first woman president. Her extravagant campaign manager is Charles Humphries. Gary Chapman and Bobby Clodfelter are joint owners in a comic magazine publishing company. Everette Carpenter illustrates the stories written by Harold Freeze and Nettie Sue Huffman. Their main comic strips are “The Loves of Jan James”’ and ‘Bringing Up Father’ (starring Bobby Barr). One time during a chemistry experiment Susie Walker almost blew up the lab. Well her experience has been put into use. She is now chief tester of high explosives at the Atomic Testing grounds in Nevada. Her very able-bodied assistants are Johnny Wilkerson and Ralph Prevette. Oleta Karriker, disc jockey over Radio Station WSAT, is particularly fond of records by the Harmonetts, composed of Jean Broad- way, Shirley Allman, and Phyllis Beaver. Direc tor of the band is Claude Deal. Their manager is none other than Wayne Ritchie. Carolyn Smithdeal is a laboratory tech- nician at Landis Memorial Hospital. The charming members of the nursing staff are Phyllis Sechler, Daphne Davis, Ruby Allman, and Nina Fowler. Joe Edwards, Lee Goodnight, Wayne Mc- Laughlin and Joseph Schenk are wealthy ranchers. They are planning to purchase two- thirds of Texas to enlarge their cattle and chicken ranches. Libby Freeman, Carol Seaford and Peggy Alexander are recording records for R C A. Their latest release is ‘Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend.” Darlene Davis and Betty Yost have chosen a career in the WACs. Walter Pennell and Blanchard Roseman also chose the WACs but GIPAGS SP RG@ TEs aca were turned down and had to settle for the Army. Frank Ruckart, Tony Stack and Gene Beaver are serving the U. S. by giving their services in the Navy. Jerry Wilhelm and Charles Hyde are contractors. They plan to have a showing of homes they have built for Phyllis Clawson and Peggy Davis, whose families outgrew the five-room apartment in which they were living. Bobbie Dudley is a very popular entertainer of troops in Alaska. The cold doesn’t bother her because her wardrobe mistress, Doris Edwards, created a new Mink dress for her to wear in the Arctic. Johnny Watson will graduate from the State School of Medicine in June. He plans to begin his practice in Landis where his office nurse will be Mary Grisdale. Shirley Sechler is now working as a private secretary to Roy Troutman of Troutman and Co., and raising a family. She and her husband believe in the old slogan ‘’Cheaper by the Dozen.”’ Another person raising a large family is Sammy Johnston who has eight boys. He says he wants a whole baseball team. Jimmy Freeze (now “Old Two Gun.” under contract with the New York Yankees) has consented to coach it. William McCreary has an interesting job, a stand-in for Roy Rogers, The Janie Stirewalt Modeling Agency has just finished an assignment in New York at an exclusive shop owned and operated by Shelby Freeze. Some of their models are Phyllis Ketner, Hazel Patterson. Miss Patterson was just selected “Miss Eyefull for all Baldheaded Men Over Wie Nancy Fish has just opened a new chain of Lakes which she calls Fishes Fisherys. Her business manager is Bobbie Lee Fisher. In the halls of Dear Old Landis High | found that James Arrowood has succeeded Mrs. Ritchie as Math teacher and Linda Cavin took over the old duties of her mother. Dewey Andrews and Ervin McSwain now operate a great Billiards Parlor in Landis, nicknamed Landis Training School. Wynell Bostian is now a famous mortician with the millon-dollar slogan ‘’Use Our Lay- away Plan.” Gail Bebber is the undertaker who drums up business with her slogan ‘We'll Be The Last Friend to Let You Down.” Herman Absher and Howard Boger are airline pilots. Their hostesses are Carol Cross and Hazel Upright. 64 Holland, and Nancy Charles Hendrix is now employed by the They both create pictures and poems for the cards Barbara Garmon Greeting Card Co. for all occasions. Joyce Crouch is one of their office secretaries. Kimball North Carolina proud when she won the Miss Universe Eleanor made contest. She announced she would accept a contract from MGM.
