Wise GiZA Som Ol@ Kes REDEAND A Tie OUR HISTORY It had been raining incessantly all day. I had read all the new magazines, newspapers, and looked at all the funnies. Having nothing else to do, I wandered up to the attic. After brushing all the cobwebs from the door, I opened it. A musty but familiar odor greeted my nose. Mothballs! I had used them when storing some of my old play costumes. The source of the scent of mothballs was my old desk, in which I had stored all my belong- ings that were connected with school. I opened the first drawer and what I spied was a small, brown, leather-bound book with a lock on it. I proceeded to pick it up _ and open it, but the lock held fast. I, being the stronger, won the struggle that followed. The first entry was dated September, 1941. My interest quickened as I read: ECW ogaes , 194’) Today I started to school. I don’t like it because I can’t read and the teacher won't let me talk. (My mother wrote this for me.) AUGUST 27, 1949 At 8:30 this morning I entered high school. The changing of classes and six dif- ferent teachers promised to be a challenge to us and we accepted it with high spirits. But later I learned that the life of a lowly, green, freshman was not the best to be de- sired. [here were one hundred and thirty- five of us in the Freshman Class. Later in our freshman year, we entered the new Corriher-Lipe High School Building. The annuals were distributed today and everyone was thrilled to see his or her picture in it. I read on, refreshing my memory with the details of my past activities. EMON GWU, FETE. SICING) Today we start on another mile of our journey. We are now Sophomores and have a few more privileges than we did last year. We elected Balus Chastain as our president. This year passed almost like last year except for the fact that there was nothing any one could teach us now compared to the empty feeling we had last year. MOLLE ISIE a1 waa We have completed another mile in our tedious journey. We are now Juniors and second in rank in high school. We feel more responsible now than we did before, because the freshman, who are below us, more or less follow the examples that we set. Today we elected the Junior Class officers. They are: President—Harold Cook; Vice-President Faye Bebber; Treasurer—Balus Chastain; and Reporter —FEarl Faggart; Secretary Anne Taylor. In April, we had our Junior-Senior Ban- quet, and later in May, we had our Junior- Senior Prom. Our Homecoming Queen was Gail Miller. Also we started the Dancing Club, which was held every other Wednes- day night at the Legion Hut and at the gym. PA) OS e a OZ At last we are Seniors; some of us feel older and wiser, and some feel no change at all. This year is my most important year, and I will have lots of things to write in my diary. We are very proud of our class officers and know they will do their jobs to the best of their ability. They are: President Continued on page 53 JOANNE ADAMS A quiet girl With a nice smile— Her temper is calm And her friendship’s worthwhile. On our jour- ney, we see many of the members of the graduating class of 1953. As we glide over New York, we pass the Yankee Stadium where Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hare’s midget baseball team is scheduled for a game today. Out of the dugout comes little Debbie Hare, their water girl. Mrs. Hare is the former Maxine Hess. Also at the Yankee stadium we see the great Bill Barnes, who only yesterday beat the home run record of Babe Ruth. Over on Wall Street we see Pat Lake start- ing her great secretarial career under her rich boss, who will eventually be her husband. In the C. B. S. Television building we see, in Studio A, Roberta Strickland, Doris Sloop, and Faye Bebber, singing on the Perry Como show. They have replaced the Fon- taine Sisters. They call themselves the ‘‘Star- dustwlirio. We look across the big city and see Loretta Beaver practicing for her concert to be given at Carnegie Hall this evening. At Radio City, we see Fred Jenkins, the skating champion of the world, as guest for the week. On Fifth Avenue we see Doyce Wise’s model agency getting ready for its grand opening. Ah! There are several of his well- known models: Shirley Kimball, Gail Miller, and Shirley Leazer. In Washington we see President Roy Daniels and some of his able cabinet mem- bers, Earl Faggart, Bruce Ketner, and Harold Cook having a discussion about taxes—no, it seems to be girls. Wonder what their wives would say if they would see them. On across the country in Chicago, we see the famous jet test pilot, Perry Deal, testing the new jet, the Spider, which was designed and built by the famous aeronautical en- gineer, Balus Chastain. 48 In Hollywood we see the leading star, Bobby Davis, playing the part of Roy Rogers in “‘Six-Gun Duel.’’ We also see Betty Clodfelter taking her screen test to star in a movie as a ballet dancer. Over at the Golden Gate Bridge there seems to be some repair work going on. Oh, look, there is Joe Thompson, a famous civil engineer, overseeing the job with his workers J ommy Parson, Odell Stamey and Glenn Wedding- ton. In the outer part of Hollywood we see Ruth Brawley, owner of a dude ranch, with her personal companion, Mildred Hallman, and her private secretary, Wilma Davidson. They seem to be discussing a square dance they are having. Now in Texas we see the multimillion- aire, Roy Campbell, who is owner of the Shell oil stations all over the country. He seems to be having difficulty with several of his station operators who insist on selling Texaco gasoline. They are Wayne Heglar and Floyd Cavin. We pass over New Orleans and see Ernest Stone, now leader of a jazz band with Paul Clawson playing the bass horn. Ernest is doing exceptionally well. here is his pink cadillac with zebra striped seat covers parked in front. Barbara Karrtker is his private sec- retary and business manager. At a well known hotel in Miami, we see the famous comedian Douglas Johnson do- ing his weekly floor show. Douglas works here only in the winter and spends his sum- mers vacationing in Maine. It seems he is doing very well since he has two lovely mansions in Maine. Doris Fulcher is his private secretary, and handles all his private and business affairs. Back in North Carolina, we see that not all of our members have left the dear old home state. In Greensboro we see Shirley Smith starting her school of commerce, As two of her faculty members, she has Elzo Threatt and Jean Walker. She plans to be a missionary to Africa. Living at Fort Bragg with her husband, is the former Anne Fulcher. She is doing her weekly washing. At the fairgrounds in Charlotte, Jimmy Beaver, a well known speed demon, is racing in his number 58 today. His mechanic and companion is Shuford Belk. Listen! A news flash. Joe Cook, one of the ten most wanted men in the United States, just robbed the First National Bank in Charlotte. Will they catch him this time? Let’s hope so. Driving busses for the Carolina Coach Company are Bobby Eagle, Faye Nichols, Bobby Goodnight, and Gene Upright. They are taking the members of the Senior Class of our Alma Mater to Washington. That is now an annual affair, Dr. Bill Ketner and his nurses, Doris Mills and Lois Honeycutt, are on their way to an emergency at the Harrington Memorial Hos- pital in Landis. Doris has a busy schedule with her duties at the hospital and nursing the wounds of the players of the Landis and China Grove football game of 1952. Gene Weddington has just opened his clothing store on Main Street in Landis, and we see the prominent Joe Wright, Jr., buying a new outfit. Ferrell James has really built the Landis Airport into a promising enterprise. He has planes leaving for all points of the world. The former Geraldine McLaughlin and Thelma Scercy are boarding one of the planes to meet their husbands in Germany, where they are doing secret service work. Billy Hamrick’s Landis Spinners are com- peting for the National League pennant. They are in second place now. At the County Farmers meeting, we see two of the leading Dairy farmers, Bob Mc- Laughlin and Henry Starnes. Duard Murphy, 50 editor of the Landis Gazette, is speaking to them tonight. Besste Peacock now owns her own drug- store in Landis, It is a hangout for the stu- dents. Waitresses and soda jerks are Betty Boothe and Joanne Adams. Marvie Cagle is head of the cosmetics department. Helen Bunton and her husband, pastor of the Landis Baptist church, are having lunch in the cafeteria part of the drugstore. Up the street at Miller’s Appliance Shop, Helen Beaver, is working as a bookkeeper. At Cannon Mills we see quite a few of our members. There is Larry Ford, a big executive and buyer. Shirley Fink and Latrelle Funderburke are working in the tabulation department. Joyce Freeman is a private secretary to Bill Cannon, and SEES KIGtizZetO Aw ae Brows. Back at school we see quite a few of the gang, Sidney Yost is the new principal, Ann Taylor is head of the Home Economics De- partment, Shirley Correll 1s head of the English Department, and Helen Allman head of the Mathematics Department. Elizabeth Patterson is coach of the girls basketball team. Syvlia Eddleman is the school secre- tary and registrar. Visiting the school today are the former Shirley Speight and her husband of the U. S. Navy. They are home for a few days. Since our fuel is running low we are forced to land—and of all places right in Landis. We really had an enjoyable jour- ney, though; and what a joy it was to see so many of our old friends and classmates, and all doing so well. The last of September, we started our magazine campaign. How wonderful it was to win a placque. We sold over $1500 and cleared over $600. Our class rings finally came, and everyone's fingers suddenly became sore. Football prac- tice came later, and a wonderful unde- feated many seniors on the squad who gave out- season followed. We had a good standing performances during the season. Bill Barnes made all of us proud of him as he won so much state-wide acclaim for his great football playing during the season. Our Senior Play was such a glorious success, thanks to the fine direction of Mr. Robert Phillips. With high hopes, both basketball teams hope to capture both County Conference titles this year. Elizabeth Patterson and Bill Barnes are our two outstanding players and we are depending on them to help us win the Conference. Oe) Gail Miller claimed her share of titles while she was in high school. In her senior year she won the Miss Hi-Miss contest, Miss Landis, and represented us at the Lions Bow] game at Salisbury. The Juniors gave us a fine banquet and we had a wonderful time there. The ban- quet was held at Hotel Concord on April 24, 1953. In May we had our Prom at the Legion Hut and everyone was excited be- cause we were reaching the end of our last mile, Preparations for commencement have begun and everyone is doing his part. We chose the American Beauty Rose as our flower and our colors are red and white. Some of us have a feeling of uncertainty as we face the future but whatever comes, we know we can face it with courage and a feel- ing of achievement.
